Remorse ( Edited Version )

" How dare you? I trusted you!" She roared at me.

Jem started flailing her arms all over the place in a frenzy, seething with anger.

"  But.. they forced me! Cornered me!" I tried explaining but to no avail...
-
I sat at my table, my heart pounded furiously against my ribcage. I took another look at the note that had mysteriously appeared under my table. The same note that was responsible for my heart palpitations.  It read, " come to the third stall from the right in the girls' bathroom during recess" in a messy manner, as if the person who wrote it was in a hurry.

The teacher gestured for us to go to recess. Not wanting to prolong my ever-growing nervousness, I dashed immediately for the Girls' Bathroom, making sure to avoid other pupils who were carrying their meals with great caution to their tables.

Closing the door behind me,my bestfriend, Jem,  was already inside the stall, making me eager and frustrated at the same time.

She fidgeted, her eyes fixed solely on the floor, occasionally darting to the walls.

She sighed after a moment's silence. "Promise me that you won't tell anybody about this okay? " She questioned me. Curiousty enveloped me, thinking of all the posibilities for her strange actions so far. I could not think of any reason on why she could be acting in this way.

"Of course! I'm your bestfriend! " I replied reassuringly, making sure I sounded enthusiastic albeit I could hear a hint of nervousness in my voice.

" I spray painted Riley's front door... I'm sorry, I just couldn't handle it anymore! I needed to do something! " Jem stammered looking at me like a kid who was just about to squish an ant with her fingers. She clasped her hands together at her chest, staring at me, waiting for my answer.

" ...I don't know about this..."

If it was a minor matter, I would have agreed without any hesitation. But this was vandalism... I would have to think carefully about such a thing. However, when I saw Jem quivering like a leaf, I couldn't help but to give in. And so, I agreed.
-
She was too much. I could not get around to eating that recess. It was hard to keep a secret that big, it kept nagging at me all period long. And it was especially difficult if Riley kept bullying us. But somebody had to do it. She was just too much .

The rest of the day was like watching paint dry, questions raced through my mind every second,  every minute.
  -
"I know you had something to do with this! " Riley bellowed.

I was surrounded by Riley and her posse in the Girls' toilet, their eyes locked on my body, waiting for the right time to pounce on me.

"You better confess or you'll regret it!" Riley threatened, dragging the sentence out. She had a hint of mischievousness in her dark brown eyes, laced with anger. She threw her hand back, preparing to punch.

"No! I, I didn't do it! Jem did... " I had let the cat out of the bag, I was safe, for now.

"Good girl..." Riley smirked.

Oh no. I could already see Jem, punished for what I could have prevented.

-

She looked at me with great regret.

"How dare you? I trusted you! " Jem was enraged with anger and regret.

I was her trusted friend and I betrayed her.

" But they cornered me! I'm sorry! So sorry... " At this point, even apologising did not seem to calm her down.

"There is nothing you can do! "

With that, she twirled around and stormed out of my room, stopping when she reached the door.

" I trusted you..." She squeaked, tears brimming her eyes.

Then she slammed the door. We were supposed to be doing our project together, but I had made her angry.
-

She was gone.

When I heard about her transfer, I was beyond shocked. I was even angry at her. Hearing that she transferred to another school was one thing but she did not even inform me that she was transferring at all. It was all too sudden.

I checked my contacts, searching for her name, Jem Clare Screave, a big scolding session in mind. But I couldn't, her contact had vanished into thin air. I had no other way of contacting her. I had droven her away.

She was gone for good
