DIRW 4. Did I really win?

He was in a good mood because he had finally won. Maya was proud of him, for catching the serial killer who had messed up so many families along with theirs. There was obviously a void in their lives, which would never be filled again, which was impossible to be filled, of Nisha, their daughter, who was forever gone from their lives in such a disturbing way.

Today was the day Nazeem would be trialled. Surprisingly, they had also found four guns in his house and another two pistols with him when they had caught him but he had not opened fire on the police. It was almost like he wanted to get arrested. Everything seemed to be too easy. Was he really that dumb or was there something else at play here?

The detective immediately scraped away the disturbing recurring thoughts. He had asked Maya if she would like to attend the trials too but she did not want to look at the person who brutally killed her daughter, which was understandable.

In high spirits, he entered the courtroom and sat down. He was still not his usual self, because his daughter was still gone and his wife was still not herself. However, he had won and he could not afford to lose this chance at celebration. After all, after his daughter's death, there would not be many chances of celebrations and merriment and even all those would be plagued by memories of his daughter. Thanksgiving, Christmas, Diwali, birthdays, everything would have her memories now. This was his best shot at celebrating without remembering her.

The trial started as the suspect was being brought in but the Detective was surprised that the culprit was not Nazeem. He cross checked whether this was the right courtroom but he was indeed in the right courtroom. He sighed and messaged the detective who he had handed the case over to. He could not bear to sit in the courtroom anymore so he stepped outside.

D: What the fuck, Joe? This is not Nazeem

Joe had replied from the other side.

J: I am sorry Detective, I was blackmailed. He had a team behind him who was instructed on what to do after his arrest and they were going to share videos of my affairs on every Government website. I could not afford to lose my wife and this job. I have no idea why the other person agreed to be the scapegoat but probably he was blackmailed too.

The Detective screamed in rage, sitting down, not believing that this was happening. He was so close to victory, so very close. How could he be such a fool to believe that this was not a setup? That Nazeem had no idea that he was going to be arrested? He went inside the courtroom where they were showing the CCTV footage which they had gathered near Nazeem's house. This would prove that they had arrested the wrong Nazeem.

As the footage went by, he pulled on his hair to see that the face of Nazeem had changed to match the main suspect now, who was innocent and was going to be a scapegoat. The new Nazeem, or the scapegoat as the detective called him, was given a life sentence in the prison and the real perpetrator was still outside, starting a new life in Italy...
