Chapter 2: The Search Party (4/7/19)
Kanan jolted upright when he received the com link message from Ezra. He had been dozing off in the copilot's seat next to Hera, whose eyes scanned the medical bay below the Ghost.
"Specter six, did you find the supplies?" Kanan asked into the com link tiredly.
There was no response other than strange static sounds that came through. It sounded like Ezra was in motion, walking maybe.
"Hello?" Kanan asked, "He must have accidently turned it on," he said to Hera with a shrug.
This got Hera's attention and she was now alert and watching Kanan's wrist where the piece of technology sat. Kanan flicked the electric device in annoyance and reached to turn it off, but stopped when he heard Ezra's voice ring through it.
"So, where are you taking us?" Ezra's voice sounded strained and unnatural.
Hera and Kanan shared a nervous look. Kanan was awake instantly, throwing all his signs of sleepiness aside. This was important.
"I already told you, boy," that was a female's voice. It sounded like something straight out of a horror story, "Lord, Vader,"
Kanan's heart clenched in his chest at the name. No. Not Ezra.
"And who is that?" Ezra's voice again, "I have never met him before,"
"Oh, I think you have," the female voice explained, "Here's a clue, the sith lord,"
Hera gasped and started punching buttons on the Ghost's controls. Kanan put the com link to his ear and listened hard. They have Ezra. But who was they? Stop. He had to focus. Kanan closed his eyes and listened through the Force. There was silence on the other end of the com link. More silence. Come on Ezra... say something.
"Yes, fear I am sensing. Lord Vader will be very pleased,"
The shifting sound of movement stopped. Hera stopped and looked to Kanan; fear in her eyes. They both jumped when they heard the recognizable ignition of a lightsaber. Soon followed was Ezra's shout of pain and after that, the hollow scream of Sabine's distant voice scream his name. They have Sabine.
It was closely followed by, "That's what you deserve for..." the connection was lost and all that could be heard was the crackling sound of a destroyed com link.
"Zeb! Rex! Get in here!" Hera shouted in dismay.
Zeb and Rex had been making lunch in the kitchen as they waited for Ezra, Sabine, and Chopper to return from their mission.
Hera looked to Kanan who now had his head bowed and his hands set in a triangle over his forehead and cheeks.
"Kanan, who was that? What happened?" she asked and put a hand on Kanan's shoulder for comfort.
He was trembling and when he looked up, she noticed that his eyes were misty with tears ready to form.
"They have him. They hurt him!" Kanan suddenly stood up, "Get us to the ground,"
"Chopper!?" Hera shouted into her own com link that was stationed at the Ghost's controls, "Where are you?"
Zeb and Rex walked into the room.
"What is all the yelling about?" Zeb asked, "Ezra trying to impress Sabine again, and failing?" he chuckled to himself.
"Not now, Zeb!" Kanan said as he leaned over where Hera was and waited for a response from Chopper.
"They must have taken him too," Hera concluded and started lowering the ship to the docking bay.
"What's going on?" Rex asked, sensing the danger in the air.
Kanan looked to Hera, and then stood quietly staring at the ground. Hera noticed and took action, as she gently pushed past Kanan.
"Kanan got a call from Ezra. We heard another voice...a female voice talking about the sith lord we encountered the other day," she looked at Zeb, knowing he would remember the scary event, "There was a lightsaber and screams, then nothing. Ezra and Sabine have been captured by Imperials," Hera went silent as she looked from Zeb to Rex, waiting for a response.
"What kind of Imperial would have a lightsaber and be hunting us if not the sith lord himself?" Rex asked.
Everybody turned to Kanan. He had sat back down and was looking out the window of the Ghost to the med bay down below. He closed his eyes and thought the impossible.
"An inquisitor," he announced. He was uncertain and very certain of his answer at the same time.
"Another inquisitor?" Zeb questioned, not doubtfully.
"Are there more?" Hera asked.
"Ahsoka might know," Rex added.
"We need to get down there and look for them," Kanan explained.
Hera moved back to her pilot's seat and started lowering the Ghost. Kanan started giving orders.
"Zeb and Rex, I need you in the Phantom. Stay in the air and scan for any ships. Contact Hera and I of any activity, but do not interact. We don't know who we are dealing with,"
"Got it," Zeb nodded.
"Yes, captain," Rex said in true clone fashion as he hustled after Zeb.
Hera flew through the med bays ship blast doors and landed the Ghost after Zeb and Rex had detached from the Phantom. The two lingered silently in space and started tracking for any ships. Unfortunately, the Phantom did not have the high technology of tracking lifeforms, although that would have been useful. Zeb told himself to inform Sabine of this after they saved her.
"Hera, stay here and be ready. I am going out to look for them," Kanan explained as he stood again, "Take off if there is any trouble,"
Hera caught his arm before he could rush away.
"Slow down, clear your mind, and be safe," she said calmly.
"I will be back soon," Kanan ran out of the Ghost and into the metal surroundings of the medical station hallways.
He took the two pieces of his lightsaber and attached them together in one swift motion. He was ready to take down the enemy that had stolen and hurt his padawan.
