Walls
Drasilla ran through the town, wind blowing in her face. But it was nothing compared to the intense gusts of the wild or the air turbulence left in the passing of a blue bird. The thought made her heart beat harder. She was so close- just a few more minutes.
As she ran, she heard sobbing. She immediately stopped and turned her head in all directions, trying to place the sounds. She eventually saw her, a school girl that looked about her age. The girl had short, pink-tinted hair, slightly tan skin and wore a white shirt with a small black dress.
Drasilla didn't know exactly what to do. She was wasting time. But she couldn't leave this girl without trying. It would be to taxing on her already heavy soul. So, with a small sigh, she approached the girl.
"Hello?" She tried.
The girl immediately snapped her head up before using her hands to wipe away her tears as she stood up.
"I-I'm sorry. W-what do y-you want?" She stuttered.
"Why are you sorry? I just want to help you"
"Oh"
"What's wrong"
"I doubt you can help me"
"But I want to try"
"W-who are you?"
"I'm Drasilla, but you can call me Silla if you want"
"Okay, Silla"
"Who are you?"
"M-m na-name is P-Persia."
"Pretty name"
"You too"
"Say, would you like to go on a walk with me?"
"W-here to?"
"Someone where special"
"O-Okay. I d-do suppose I h-have n-nothing better t-to do"
"Cool. Now come on, we're running out of time till school starts again"
"H-hey, w-wait up"
The two took of down the streets, Persia following Drasilla who was surprised at how well Persia was keeping up. Finally, they arrived at the first wall. There were four walls in total, each a bit bigger than the previous and greater and larger defenses each layer.
"Ummm, t-this is the w-wall"
"I know, now come on, let's go"
"W-wait, w-were going to c-climb the w-wall?"
"Yes, now either take it or leave it"
"B-but w-were not supposed t-to climb the wall. Its a-against the r-rules."
"Screw the rules"
Persia fidgeted for a few seconds before sighing and climbing the wall as well, following the pattern of foot and hand holes Drasilla had used.
The land between the first and second wall was overgrown a bit. Run down buildings scattered in the area, the second wall had vines on it. This was why the first wall was taller than most houses and why the two had had to climb a tree to get high enough to attempt to scale it. To keep the people from seeing the failed civilization just on the other stone slab.
A centipede, a large one at that, came slithering towards them. Drasilla was used to seeing the meter long bug, but Persia, was clearly not.
"What is that"
"A centipede. Just keep moving it won't attack us if we don't give it a reason to, trust me"
"O-okay"
As soon as they made it to the second wall, Drasilla grabbed onto the vines and followed the pattern she used practically daily. Persia struggles, but managed to follow. They made their way down, tumbling on the ground between the second and third wall.
"M-my shirt."
"Oh. Yeah, white was probably not the best color for this"
"W-we'll I d-didn't know what we were doing. Clearly y-you did, y-you're wearing bl-black and long s-sleeves"
"True that. Now come on, Persia"
They continued, Drasilla calm and relaxed, though on edge. Persia was frantic and wearing white- not the best combination in a world where now things got bigger. A few wood or brick piles were spotted as they crossed the area between the second and third wall. The space was wider than between the fort and second wall. The space between the fourth wall and fifth wall were the largest and the hardest to cross. They reached the third wall, which was lined with machines the size of a two story house.
"W-why are there guns? A-and why a-are they s-so b-big?"
"Because of the animals. They're defenses"
Persia gulped before following Drasilla over the third wall, as it it was too late to go back now. The space between the third and fourth wall had generous of overgrowth. Large plants resided here and trees seemed to be in the process of maturing. Through the middle of all this there was a large ditch that stretched from the fourth wall to about halfway to the third wall. Trough the broken wall, you could see inot the gap between the fifth and fourth wall had been broken. Drasilla tempered when this was created; a falcon (she guessed based on history books she had scavenged from before the overcoming) had been shot down, breaking the fourth wall. Such a waste.
"Let's continue"
As they did, they heard a growling from behind them at one point between the fourth and fifth wall. Drasilla pauses, knowing the sound. She slowly turned to face a black panther, significantly larger than the guns from earlier.
"Quickly to the underbrush"
They ran to the dart of a large fern plant
(again, inferred from the history books)
and watched as the panther pounced on and killed a rabbit as it came out of the forest across the clearing.
Persia gasped, covering her mouth to keep from screaming. This Drasilla allowed herself not to be upset at. It was the circle of life. It was when man or man made creation killed the wildlife, such as the falcon from a year ago. That's how long she had been doing this. Sneaking away at night or between school hours. She couldn't stand living in a society with very few and genetically modified animals simply to provide food, not as companions
(as mentioned yet again in the history books)
As soon as they were past the fifth wall, which was mostly broken down but with gigantic machines surely two times the size of the panther. Drasilla finally felt free. It had been a tedious past hour crossing the land, but it was worth it. She ran ahead, momentarily forgetting about Persia, who now struggled to keep up. Drasilla stopped suddenly, causing Persia to run into her.
"Drasilla w-why d-did you st-stop?"
Drasilla didn't respond. She simply shushed Persia and pushed aside the large plants in front of them to reveal a small clear cliff edge. As if on cue, a blue bird came flapping by. The wind left in its wake blew Drasilla ponytail in her face, hair getting in her mouth. She used her hand to remove the hair from her moth, but smile.
"Careful" she whispered as she leaned towards the edge.
The two leaned over the cliff. Persia was blown away at the sight of everything spread out below them. All land insight was full of vegetation unlike anything back in town. And the animals- oh the animals. She had never known anything outside the first wall; yet alone that there were four additional walls and a whole entire rest of the world overtaken by animals.
"It's m-magical"
"I know.
————————————————————————
Heyo. So I'm kinda proud of this one. I know some parts are rather bad, but if I gave it enough work, I think it might be okay. If any of you want to see this as a re-write or book even? Do make sure to bot or comment, or both of you're feeling it! But I just wanted to clarify things, as I feel they might now be clear.
Basically, Drasilla lives in a world, or future time, where animals have grown out of common day proportions. They retain duke in town for food to feed the people, but that means they have to be genetically modified for their needs. And for protection against the world outside of town, they set up walls. The further out the wall, the wider the gap and bigger the defenses.
So I think I'm down her for now. Love you all, see you another time. Stay safe and be happy.
