Freeze your brain
Mind you, I've never seen Heathers, I just have heard some of the song, such as this one.
I threw open the door to my house and ran out, ignoring my mom calling for me in the background. Her voice was soon drowned out by distance and the sound of my shoes on the concrete.
It felt weird having run away, this being my first time doing so. Obviously I'd have to go back eventually, but I hadn't been able to stand it. The yelling, the stress, my suicidal thoughts.
I shoved my hand on my pocket where my phone was. I pulled it out. I already had a few missed texts from my Mom and Dad.
I frowned and blocked both before they could try to call me. I continue walking now along the main road that heads to where I was heading.
I take my phone out of the case to reveal a twenty dollar bill. That'll be more than enough for a couple refills.
I take the money out and put my phone back in the case before putting in my earbuds and selecting shuffle play on MyDarkestDays.
I pull up my hood over and let my head hang as dread fills me when I think about the repercussions of what I did. I cursed under my breath and forced myself to walk faster, ignoring the cars that zoomed past.
Finally, after an additional 5-10 minuets, the shop came into view. Normally I'd smile at the idea of relief being inside, but now was so overwhelming. I walk in and immediately head to the checkout counter.
"One slushy please." I say quietly as the lady behind the counter asks for my order.
"Anything else, hun?" She asked questioningly.
I was a little hungry, but I may not feel hungry after having a slushy, so I'll hold off on ordering food for now.
"No thank you." I mumble.
I stand off to the side and wait a minute or two as they get me a cherry slushy, as I'd ordered.
The store's bell rings. The noise attracts my attention and I looked over.
Great. It's a guy from school. Bet he'll make fun of me or something. I recognize him from somewhere. What class?
"Order 18"
I turn instantly and walk over to pay. As I was able to predict, I walked away from the counter with plenty more money. I passed by the guy as I went to go sit down. He must've seen my face and recognized me too, because he smiled and waved. I looked to him, but didn't do anything else in response as I sat at a two-seater table to stare out the window.
I set the slushy down for now. The outside world looked pretty at night. There's a small forested area I could spot from the window. The moon casted onto the trees. I don't know how long I was able to sit there before I saw a deer. I smiled to myself before the deer turned and ran.
It ran away.
Just like me from home.
My mom and Dad had- nope! Not thinking about that.
I picked up my slushy and started slurping it through the straw quickly, waiting for the pain. And there it is. My head started to hurt as I started to experience a brain freeze. The pain distracted me for long enough as I struggled not to make a noise. The temporary pain started to recede.
"Hey, are you alright?"
I look up to see the guy from earlier. I remember where I knew him from as I looked into his green eyes. His brown hair that came across his face to one side allowed me to pin a name to him.
He was Kade Remill, a kid in a few of my classes. My history, science and theatre classes if I'm correct. I nodded as I processed this.
"Brain freeze." I mumbled.
He sat down in the seat across from me. I instantly felt more worried. What if someone though we were a couple or something? I mean, I'd doubt it, but still, why chance it?
I felt overwhelmed so I started drinking my slushy fast again. The pain came back, once again distracting me.
"Woah, slow down! You're going to give yourself a brain freeze again."
He said, not realizing I already had.
I set down my slushy and frowned.
"You're Kade, Redmill. Right?"
I asked.
I might as well speak to someone about something. He's apparently not hear to taunt me about anything, so can't hurt to make some conversation.
He nodded.
"And you're Chelsey Salena, from my theatre class, right?"
I nodded.
"So. What brings you here?" I asked.
He shrugged.
"Just bored really. Plus my brother works here, so thought I'd come visit him at work."
"Oh really?" I was surprised.
"Which one?"
Kade trend in his seat and pointed to a young man (or just an adult looking teen)behind on of the cash registers. The man smiled at the costumer and handed them their change before turning to the next person in line.
The man behind the counter and Kade shares the same green eyes and retained the same hair color, though it was visible that Kade's skin tone was a bit lighter than his brother's.
"What's his name?" I questioned.
"His name is Remeh. It's ironic, really. He's such a chill guy and his initials are R and R, as in rest and relaxation."
I smiled a little as I thought of the few times my friends would redirect to the restroom as the RR. I had to keep from snickering by taking a few sips of my slushy.
"What brings you here?" Kade asked.
I stopped drinking for a moment. My thoughts started racing and my pulse increased. What could I tell him that's believable but not what happened? I had completely forgotten about what happened, why'd he have to ask that question.
I shut my eyes and started slurping faster again, quietly begging for one more brain freeze to disuse before I needed a refill.
Suddenly the straw was removed from my mouth and the cup was yanked from my hand.
I opened my eyes to see Kade holding my cup.
"You need to stop doing that." He sighed as he set down the cup. "You going to give yourself a brain freeze like earlier."
I let my eyes gloss over and pushed back my emotions.
"Then let me." I said plainly as I took the cup back and continued drinking, just slower.
"Why do you want to have a brain freeze? Aren't those things dangerous to have too often?"
I don't know. Are they? The idea made my pulse increase again.
"I don't think so. But it doesn't matter."
I spat as I turned to the window
"You didn't answer my first question." He said after a pause.
I turned to him.
"You know those thoughts you get? The ones that dominate everything, that tell you to end it all, that consume your brain? Depressing thoughts, if you will."
He nodded.
"Well, everyone gets those from time to time. But that doesn't explain-"
"I didn't finish. For me, I get those often. Some people over come them by reading. Others draw, listen to music, sing. For me, the only way to overcome them is to act, or have a brain freeze. I don't exactly act off-script when on my own, so I come here and get a slushy to give myself a brain freeze. The pain distracts me."
Kade sat silent. It set upon me how much I had spilled with him. I frowned and got up quickly. I tossed my cup in the trash and turned to leave when Kade grabbed my wrist.
"Wait, Chelsey, wait."
I hesitated to moved, so he stepped closer.
"A-are you o- nevermind, that's a stupid question."
He racked his brain for the right words and I just stood there, unsure wether to leave or not.
"Want me to drive you home?" He asked.
"I-it seems l-like you could use the company."
He mumbled.
I was very, very hesitant, but agreed. I saw him wave to his brother before we walked outside. I was surprised that Kade had a car, though he was a Junior, and was 17 so it was legal.
"So, what's kind of music do you like?" He asked.
I shrugged.
"Whatever is one the radio."
He gave me a small smile.
"Me too."
He turned on some the radio, though kept it quiet so I could direct him to my house. I didn't really think of the fact that my mom would get into me about be dropped off by a someone she didn't know, but I wasn't going to let that crowd my time here.
As we drove, a song my ImagineDragons came on. It was Demons, the song I knew by heart. I couldn't help but start to sing softly along to the song. I was surprised when Kade started singing as well.
I stopped singing momentarily as the small shock passed through. He wasn't a bad singer. I think he was quite good actually. I joined back in at the chorus. By the time the song ended, we were in the neighborhood.
I reached over and switched of the radio, having seen how Kade had turned it on earlier.
I told him what house to pull up to. As he came to a stop, I frowned, everything coming back at me.
My breathing started racing and my pulse increased again. Tears spring to my eyes and suddenly all I could do was huddle in on myself and stare at the dashboard as my thoughts became jumbled.
"Chelsey, calm down, breath." Kade said as he reached out to me.
I instinctively flinched away, feeling overwhelmed.
"Okay, I won't touch you just listen to my voice and breath okay? It'll be alright. Here, breath with me. In, 2, 3, 4, Out, 2, 3, 4. Again. In. Out."
Eventually I calmed down. Not to say I was calm, cause I know I was a mess, but I already wasn't shaking anymore, as Kade told me I had been.
"Chelsey. What's wrong?"
"Nothing. Thank you for driving me home."
I said abruptly before getting out of the car, not wanting to tell him. I've already opened up enough to him tonight. He'll probably spread rumors about me or something.
I tried the handle on the door, that was still unlocked surprisingly. I walked inside and closed the door quietly. I locked it before heading to the living room. My mom was collapsed on the couch. I sighed.
She didn't deserve this. Oh well.
I turn around and head upstairs. I went to enter my room only to be confronted by my younger sister, Faith.
"Where were you?"
She had tears in her eyes.
"Mom was yelling. Dad broke something. I-I was scared. I t-though you were in your room, but you weren't! Where were you!?"
Even though she was more just whispering, her worse sounded like yelling to my heart. I frowned and hugged her.
"I'm sorry. I had to take a break. I won't leave you alone again, okay?" I said.
She hugged me back.
"You better not, or I'm suing you,"
She hissed.
I snickered a little, despite my tears.
"Okay Faith. Okay."
I said this though it was a lie. I know I would leave again to go back to the shop.
