One it was a feeling
A small feeling
In the back of her mind
Then it was a snake
A snake that slithered around her and constricted her breathing
Then it was a bear
A bear that chased after her and roared when she thought she'd finally gotten away
Then it was a beast
A beast the held her in its claws and consumed her bit by bit
She held up her blade
She dug it into herself
Wanting to remove the darkness inside of her
Then it became a shadow
Always there
The moment she walked away from the light the shadow attacked
Then one day she met a bright light
This bright light broke apart the shadow
Then it became a lizard
Just the flicking of its tail was all it could do
But time was not as kind to her as the lizard
Then it became a snake
Then it became a bear
Then it became a beast
The beast stood in front of her
Blocking out the light
Leaving her alone and defenseless
"Take me away" she yelled
"No" the beast replied
"For now you must stay and suffer what you have become"
A mirror appeared
The girl looked at herself
Her deformed skin
Her oversized body
Her bare arms
Her tangled hair
"You are ugly"
The beast said
"You are useless"
"You are unwanted"
"You are unnecessary"
"But come to me"
"You are useful to me"
"I want you"
"I need you"
And so she bowed her head and surrendered
Then the beast grew
Grew into something so large now her whole world is consumed by it
And now she obeys it
Following its every command
Because now she is not lonely
The darkness will always be there for her
The light it fades
The darkness
It never goes away
