Phone Call
I rolled around my bed, a little restless somehow. There wasn't anything to do but sleep. It's already passed nine, which normally was the time I slept. But, why can I sleep? I grabbed one of my pillows and lay there for a second in total silence. Then, suddenly, my phone vibrated.
I almost jump in surprise and tapped my hands around the pillow underneath my head, looking for my phone. It only took a second before it was in my hands. Then, I squinted my eyes as I eyed the bright screen. I blinked a couple of times before the words became clear. When it did, my heart jolted like someone had kick start it. After trying, and failed, to come myself down, I placed the phone near my ear after clicking the answer button.
"Ah... Hello." I said hesitantly. Why do I feel shy? This wasn't the first time we've talked on the phone.
"Hey, how are you?" He greeted. His voice doing it's magic to my beating heart.
"I'm good. You?" I countered briefly, biting my lips as I tried to hold in my enthusiasm.
"I'm well." He replied almost silently. "So, what are you doing right now?"
"I'm on my bed, trying to sleep." I replied all too honestly. I silently slapped myself on the head.
"Oh! Did I call on a bad time?" He asked, sounding a bit guilty.
"No. You didn't. I couldn't sleep and I'm bored anyways." I replied assuringly. After I said it, I regretted that I did. I sounded like I've already done this sort of thing – which was true - but he doesn't need to know that now.
"Oh! Good!" He said enthusiastically, but paused to clear his throat, like he wasn't planning to soundly that way. "Ah... So... How is the artwork coming along?" He asked, shifting a topic.
I chuckled at his subtle way of hiding his true feelings. "It's okay. I'm almost done with it." I replied with a smile. I didn't know why I'm smiling since he couldn't see me from across the phone.
"When is the competition again?" he asked with genuine interest.
"The day after tomorrow, which is too near for me. I'm still not close to finishing it." I replied and ranted a little. This always happened when I talked to him.
"You'll do well. I know how good you are." He stated, sounding a bit proud. Do I sound like this from across the phone when I remarked something about him?
"I don't know. I'm doubtful about the design. Have you seen it when I brought it this morning?" I sighed heavily and asked.
"Yes. I saw a glimpse of it, but you were adamant on keeping it out of sight." He chuckled at his humorless words.
"Haha. Well, you know I don't like people to see an unfinished product." I countered sternly, giving out an eye roll – which, again, he couldn't see.
On the other end of the phone, I could hear his distant laugh as he pushed the phone away for a second. "Yes. That, I do know well." He agreed.
"Well, enough about my art stuff. What have you been doing? I heard that you won the basketball match in gym today." I asked, changing the topic to him.
"You heard right. But, it was a team effort. I can't take all the credit." He replied with a chuckle.
"How many points did you do?" I asked out of interest. From what I heard, he did more than anyone from his team.
"I didn't really count. But, Jake told me that I did more than half..." He shyly admitted and trailed off.
"Wow! That's awesome! You should try-out for the team." I urged encouragingly.
"I'm not really that good, and I'm too busy with stuff already."
"You know you are too humble sometimes." I smiled to myself.
"Me? Humble? Well, you are the one who volunteered to take part of the student council committee for this year's dance. And, I know you have more on your plate that I am." He countered in challenge.
"You are also in that committee you know." I pointed knowingly, and chuckled at his clumsiness. I couldn't believe he forgot and we had a meeting a few days ago.
"Wait. What?" He asked, a little surprised. "Oh! Right! I almost forgot... Damn it!" He hissed in annoyance to himself.
I laughed at his reaction and repositioned myself on my bed, laying down on my front. "See... And, you accuse of being a 'yes man'." I stated with a grin.
"Well, on my case, I only volunteered because you were in it." He said in defense. He didn't even sound ashamed when he admitted it.
"Really?" I asked softly. He just caught me off guard. Why would he say that?
"I wouldn't really do it since it would be less fun without someone to tease." He stated. And, as he said those words, I could image a smirk on his face right now.
"Oh! Now, I know why you stick around so much and annoy me." I said in understanding, my voice sounded calm than I expected.
"I'm just kidding." He said with a laugh. For a second, I felt my heart sunk. What was he kidding about? He didn't really volunteered all those committee's with me to be with me right? "But, I wasn't really kidding about volunteering because of you." He added softly, his voice was almost distant.
I pulled the phone away from my ear as I felt my cheeks heat up. In the same second, I could feel something turning and twisting my stomach. Is he confessing to me now?
"Mia? Are you still there?" He asked after I placed the phone back to my ear.
"Yeah. I'm here. Sorry, I slightly dozed off..." I replied, lying a little.
"Do you want to sleep? It's kind of late."
"No. I'm fine." I replied a little to jumpy, making him chuckle from my words.
"Are you the only one awake now?" He asked in interest.
"Uhm... I don't know. Since I don't hear any shouting from my siblings across the room, I think I'm the only one awake." I replied in observation. "How about you? Aren't you tired yet?" I asked back out of courtesy.
"Have we not yet established my sleeping habits?" He asked and sighed playfully.
"Oh! Right, you sleep past midnight." I replied knowingly. "Why do you sleep so late? What do you do anyway?" I asked out of interest. I never asked about this before.
"Well, I wait for my father to get home, and talk to you." He replied without a second thought.
I beamed at his last word. "Well, other than what you are doing now." I added.
"Talking to you." He emphasized and laughed.
Then, unconsciously, I couldn't anymore hide my tiredness as I yawned in an unladylike manner.
"I think we should end this here. You are tired." He stated pointedly.
"I'm so sorry. I think sleep have finally caught up with me." I admitted shyly, closing my mouth.
"Well, I'll see you tomorrow?" He said, though his words dangled into a question.
"Yeah, See you tomorrow." I said with a smile. "Good night."
"Good night and sweet dreams." He said in finality.
"Sweet dreams." I added as I waited for him to end the call.
For a second, there was silence. I pulled the phone away from my ear, checking the screen if the call had ended. Then, I placed it back to my ear. "Are you still there?" I asked curiously.
"Can you end the call? I don't have the strength to do it." He admitted with a laugh.
"Here we go again. I think this is forever a problem between us." I chuckled in amusement.
"I agree. So, please end the call or we'll forever stuck in this phone call." He stated, feeling his smile from the tone of his voice.
"Okay. Bye." I stated briefly and pulled the phone away from my ear and clicked the end button with my eye's close. It felt childish as I did that. But I couldn't have done it any other way.
When the screen on my phone had gone blank from the lack of activity, it brightened back up again with a new message flashing on the screen. I quickly opened it and saw his name on the top contacts.
'Thank you for letting me bother you again tonight. I'm glad you voluntarily answer every one of my calls. See you tomorrow. Good night and Sweet dream.
Love you – Chris.'
