From Chuckles to Flames

A girl named Wendy was walking down the street looking up to the sky. She was sixteen years old, had big eyes, long brown hair and freckles on her nose. It was promised to be a good day as today she was on her way to spend time with her grandmother called Grandma Mary. She looked ahead to see a broken down community with holes in the streets and garbage and the sidewalks. Yes, this is where she should be as this where her grandmother lived, Shanty Town. Known as a criminal area, it's dangerous to for a young girl to be here but her father, who is a Police Officer, thought her how to protect herself and how to use a gun, which she has on her person. Why Grandma Mary chooses to stay here is beyond the knowledge of this young child.

As Wendy stepped into the house, a heavenly aroma filled her nostrils. She ran to the kitchen to find her Grandma Mary with plate of chocolate chip cookies in her hands, placing them on the table. She sat down at the table and greeted Grandma Mary. She placed a glass of milk in front of Wendy, as she was stuffing her face with cookies.

Grandma Mary is a widow who lost her husband in a gang war. While he was alive, they had moved into a new neighborhood which quickly ran down after the government neglected the town, by not maintain the roads and infrastructures. The town then became a criminal hot spot where war happens frequently. Grandma Mary had planned escape routes and supplies to protect themselves, and Wendy was aware of this just in case a war starts.

After milk and cookies, Grandma Mary put Wendy to sleep by reading stories. When her eyes closed, Grandma Mary kissed her forehead and walked out the room. But the beautiful silence was disrupted by the loud bang from a gun. Wendy's eyes shot open and saw Grandma already in the room pulling out bullet-proof vests, putting it on herself and one on Wendy. The two ran to the bathroom where Grandma removed the toilet tank revealing two pistols in a Ziploc bag. She took the bag and went to her room and from behind the dresser she pulled out a duffel bag and a map showing the escape route from the town, is across the street, where a motorcycle is located in an abandoned house.

They sneaked out the front door, only to see the devastation the war had created. Cars were turned over, fires burning down houses and dead bodies on the ground. They quickly ran behind a car for cover from the gunfire above our heads. Grandma Mary suddenly remembers that she had left important documents inside and wanted to go back. Wendy, in terror, begged her grandmother to stay with her but she just kissed Wendy's forehead and I told her that she loved her and rushed back inside. But as soon as she went inside, a gunman threw a flaming bottle of Molotov at the house causing an explosion and setting the house on fire. Wendy cried out in anguish and pain.

She picked up the duffel bag and map and started shooting anyone in her way, knowing that he grandmother's wish was her to get out the neighborhood safe.
