The Chase

A/N: I had a dream about this last night, and it was too vivid not to write.

I am running. My heart is beating fast, my breaths heavy and short, but I must get away from my pursuers. My legs have begun to turn to jelly after running for so long and I know I will not be able to continue this for much longer. Suddenly, an idea pops into my head and I jump twice. Immediately, my rocket boosters come to life and I am soon gliding through the air out of reach. But this will not last long. They have unlimited resources.

I must find a safe house if I want to have any hope of escaping them, but where? The area is desolate, not a house in sight. The rockets in my shoes will begin to die, and then what? But, I spot something in the distance. A small brick house on a hill. I glide toward my only hope for salvation. But before I can reach it, my boots sputter and I am falling. I twist in midair and grab onto a nearby branch, swinging myself onto a single car traveling down the road. My pursuers have found a car to drive as well and it is not long until they catch me.

The car takes me toward the house and I jump off, sprinting to the door. Frantically, I ring the doorbell. A middle-aged woman opens it. She seems to be in her forties. I can barely speak due to my panting, but I cannot waste any time.

"Please help me," I beg as loudly as I dare. "These people, they are chasing me... I need a place to hide. Please."

The woman nods and beckons me inside, closing the door and chaining it for extra protection. Inside, I see an old woman, a middle-aged man, and a teenage boy. This is not unusual for them. Their family has fallen prey to these people many times. The woman smiles kindly at me.

"Call me Lisa," she says, leading me into a tiny bathroom. She places her hand on a tile and a tunnel opens up, small enough for me to crawl through. I kneel down and enter the tunnel. She and the old woman, who I presume is her mother, follow. The man and the boy stay behind.

The tunnel is dark and long, but eventually I drop into a large room. It seems to be another floor and has utilities I can use plentifully. But, I will not be staying here. Lisa leads me towards a closet which opens up into another secret passageway. We all crawl through. It leads to another similar area, but this is more of a storage room. There is a bed that I desperately want to sleep in, but I cannot. I must escape and hide. Near the bed, there is a platform with many baby dresses hung with small hangers. I recognize these dresses. I have worn them.

I turn to Lisa and see the family resemblance. There is a baby photo on the nightstand and it looks uncannily like me. Then I realize. I am the family member they lost. I am Lisa's daughter. But I am back now, and they must protect me. Lisa realizes this moments after I do, as she hugs me tightly, tears streaming down her face. I hear footsteps two floors above me. Then voices. I would recognize those voices anywhere. My pursuers are here.

My grandmother pushes me toward the clothes and I hide in the wall behind the frilly dresses. I am almost perfectly concealed. But, Lisa steps on a small toy on the floor and lets out a squeal. I tense up. The people can track any sound and my chances for survival have been halved. Lisa gives me an apologetic look, but the damage is done.

I hear footsteps closer above me. The pursuers have found the first passageway. I scan the room through the pink dresses, but my heart is beating out of my chest. The footsteps and voices get closer. They have found the second passageway. A bead of sweat forms above my eyebrow and I hold my breath tightly.

The door bursts open and there they stand. In their leather, bulletproof suits with guns in their hands and cruel looks in their eyes. Next to them stand my father and the teenage boy, held captive. My pursuers untie their bonds.

"Where is she?" they ask though clenched teeth. My father walks toward the dresses and I want to cry out in terror, but I cannot. "She is not here," he answers. But he glances down at my hiding spot, and that glance is enough. I know he did not do it on purpose. It was instinct. But these people are trained to notice everything.

Soon, they are ripping away the beautiful dresses and I shake in fear. I have been revealed. One man grabs me by my muddy shirt. I am about to die. I scream in fear and bolt awake.

It was all a dream. I sigh. I am in the safe haven of my bedroom. There is nobody chasing me. I do not have rocket boots. But I am still shaking and whimpering, so I throw off my blankets and bolt to my mom's room. That is the only place I will be sure of my safety tonight.
