The wingless fairy
A long time ago, there was a wingless fairy.
He was the oldest son of the royal family, and naturally, the heir to the throne. But this wasn't the case. Despite being the oldest, he was stripped of his rights to inherit the kingdom and was sent to live at the very edge of the place grounds, in a small basement for all his life.
And it was all because he had no wings. Wings represented status, beauty, and bloodline. Everything is really important, to be honest. But it was something that Cedar never had.
Wingless fairies were to be discarded as soon as possible, as it was custom. Traditionally, they were to be thrown into the woods at the night of a full moon, when all the animals were out, to ensure their death. For although it was rare, wingless fairies were said to bring bad luck and turn evil the moment they matured. Of course, this was all a silly and stupid theory but those who did try to prove them wrong never ended up in a good place.
So the only reason that Cedar was able to survive, was because of a prophecy that his death would bring havoc and chaos to their land.
From the moment he came to this world, he was treated like garbage. Never given the love and affection he was meant to receive. Never seen a glimmer of hope or shown the tiniest bit of kindness. It ate him up from the inside, but since it had happened to him since the day he was born, it didn't matter anymore once he learned not to get his hopes up.
This made him into the person he was today. An indifferent, nonchalant, yet gorgeous fairy. He was knowledgeable from the many years of dwelling inside the libraries, reading under the night sky in the comfort of the mother moon. His hair was a shiny silver, his eyes deep obsidian, his skin clear and smooth contrasting with the many callouses on his hands from his days of hunting, of hard labor to keep himself alive.
He had learned how to be swift and stealthy when he needed to, and was quick just as any full-fledged fairy, despite the lack of wings.
It was when the fateful day came, that things changed forever. It was Cedar's birthday, and he had no hopes for what was to come, a bit curious, yes, but also something else.
He was asleep in the coziness of his bed when he heard bells ringing in his ears, and recognized it as the sound of the death bells. They only rang when someone in the royal family had passed away. Once for the queen, twice for the first royal child, and so on. But this time, the bells rang rapidly and constantly "DING DONG DING DONG DING DONG..." It was annoying. More alarming though, was that this signified the kind had died.
And it was just a few minutes past midnight, Cedar's BIRTHDAY. Great.
