It Needs to End
Steve paused as he reached the doorway. He knew there was an argument waiting for him on the other side of the door, and he wasn't looking forward to having it. With a sigh, he reluctantly reached out and turned the handle.
Jenny was sitting on the sofa, when she heard the front room door opening. She looked up to see Steve come walking into the room. She didn't want to look at him at that moment, she was still too angry. She turned her whole body away from him and stared out the window.
Steve winced. The anger he could feel in the room was stabbing into his chest, like a knife straight to his heart. When he tried to resist the pain, it was replaced by the cold grip of regret in his stomach at what he had done.
Steve slowly walked over and sat down on the other end of the sofa from Jenny. He knew he needed to be close to her, but he couldn't get too close. He wanted to look her in the eyes, but he felt too guilty, so he turned away from her and looked back towards the door.
"I'm sorry, okay," said Steve, still not able to look at Jenny. "It's just, I know you don't like BTS, that's why I didn't buy you a ticket to come to the concert with me."
Jenny scowled. The anger inside her twisted her soft features into a mask of fury as she glared at the window.
"Always so damn selfish," said Jenny, through gritted teeth. "I might not be a huge BTS fan, like you, but I still would have liked to watch them perform."
Steve sighed, then turned to face her. "I don't know how many times I can keep apologising," he said.
Jenny whipped around and glared at him. "Well maybe if you stopped doing stupid things, then you wouldn't need to keep apologising all the time," she shouted.
Steve winced in pain. He didn't like to hear people shouting, it reminded him of his parents. He desperately wished he could learn to avoid arguments, but they seemed inevitable.
Jenny rolled her eyes at him, then turned away again and went back to staring out the window.
He needed something to distract himself, and to calm down the situation. Perhaps when things had calmed down, he would be able to talk to Jenny properly without it collapsing into another argument.
Steve's eyes scanned the room, and he spotted the little black cylinder on the table in the corner. "Alexa," he called out. "Play my relaxing playlist."
"Playing relaxing playlist," responded the robotic voice from the speaker.
The first song on his playlist started to play. Unfortunately, that song was 'Butter', by BTS. Steve groaned as soon as he heard the first few notes. He knew he should skip it, but it was his favourite BTS song. Instead he left the song playing and started to tap his foot and nod his head to the rhythm.
"Alexa, stop!" said Jenny, and the music stopped playing.
"Sorry," Steve mumbled.
They sat in silence. Steve watched Jenny closely for a few minutes. He could almost see the anger flowing from her. Sending ripples through the air, like a tarmac road on a hot summer's day. The ripples hit his cheeks and made them burn with shame.
"I don't know if I can do this any more," Steve said, quietly. "I don't know if I can still marry you."
Jenny spun around like a whip. "What, and you think I do?" she snapped at him. "You think I have a choice?"
The vicious fury of her voice made Steve shudder. He tried to compose himself, as tears started to form in the corner of his eyes.
"I'm sorry, it's just so hard," he said. "The lying to everyone. The lying to myself."
Jenny sighed. It was hard not to feel pity towards the man sitting in front of her. He wasn't a bad man, he was just weak. But she didn't really have any other choice. She had to keep using him.
Jenny reached out and rested her hand on Steve's knee to comfort him. "It won't be much longer," she said. "The mothership will arrive in a few months time, and if I am married I won't be forced to return to my home planet."
Steve sniffled and wiped his eyes with a tissue. "I'm sorry. You're right, I can do this," he said.
"Good boy," said Jenny, as she patted his knee. "Now why don't you go and make us both a nice cup of tea?"
"Okay," said Steve, as he slowly stood up and walked out the room.
Jenny watched him quietly as he left and shut the door behind him.
"And next time, buy me some damn BTS tickets," she muttered.
