Death of Love

She settled her self in the shallow water and looked out, waiting to be amazed. Her glorious 3ft long tail, made with vibrant; reds, pinks, and oranges; lay carefully bent. Her long brown hair lay wet and limp around her shoulders. Her sharp blue eyes, the color of the ocean, gazed around her. She had a pale complexion, not what you would expect from someone who spends so much time in the sun. She lay her torso down, propping herself up with her elbows.

It was after dark and the light show coming from the shore -  where the humans were - was just about to start. Fireworks, she believed they were called. It amazed her to see such magnificent magic put action. It was nothing like she had ever seen before.

As the fireworks started, everything came together. The sound of the ocean colliding with the rocks, the salt water smell with a hint of fish. the loud boom and crackle of the fireworks, as they came and faded away, the brilliant colors tht lit up the sky.

She thought this night was perfect. But boy was she wrong.

She eventually fell asleep, right there in the shallow end. That was probably the worse mistake any mermaid could have ever made. For the next morning she found herself where she had originally fell asleep, but she was not alone.

There was a young man, probably about 20. He was one of the most beautiful creatures she had ever seen. And he thought the same about her.

He was 5ft 9in, his hair lay in a shaggy brown mop at the top of his head, curly also. His vibrant eyes captured her attention the most. Sometimes brown and sometimes green. his tall figure stood tan, stubble on his chin like he had just shaved.

She lay there so shocked by his beauty, that she did not notice him moving closer to where she lay.

"What is your name?" he asked, his voice was deep but melodic.

She thought a moment before responding. "I don't have one." her voice was music to his ears.

This answer shocked the young man, "Well, I am Alex." He paused for a moment. "How about I call you Coral?"

"Coral? As in coral reef?" she inquired.

"Yeah. Why not?"

She gave Alex a huge grin. "I like it."

They stared at each other for a minute, once again taking in one another's bueaty. Coral all the sudden heard a shrill whistle that startled her. Her eyes went wide with fear. "I must go," she said quickly. Before Alex had a chance to respond, Coral had already dived in the water, and was gone from Alex's sight.

Later that night, as Alex laid in bed, all he could think about was Coral. He wanted to make her his. But how? As he thought, he suddenly remembered a shell that an old sea witch had given him a while back. It could make an mermaid become human, and stay human.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The next day Alex traveled back to the spot, where he first saw and talked to Coral. And there she lay, in the same position as yesterday, as beautiful as ever.

"Coral?" he called softly. "I have something for you."

She turned her head to see that Alex had come to visit her. She knew the dangers of making herself known to a human. But she didn't really care. "A gift?" she asked curiously. no one had ever given her a gift. But she also knew that humans could be very tricky, and could not always be trusted.

Alex nodded and handed her the shell. "Blow into it, make a wish, and it will come true."

Her eyes widened at the sight of the shell. No mermaid could resist a shell. Especially one as beautiful as this one. It was about the size of her fist. A solid creamy color, with splashes of different shades of purple. she tightly grasped the shell in both of her hands, squeezed her eyes shut, and blew into the shell, making her "wish".

Nothing happened at first. Until suddenly Coral"s tail and the shell began to glow. The shell turned to ash easily. 'Its working' Alex thought. 'This is not what is supposed to happen,' Coral thought. They both stared at her tail wide eyed. Alex in amazement, and Coral in fear. It began to turn the color of pale human flesh, and the shape of human legs.

Tears came to Coral's eyes as she realized what was happening. She was turning human. Alex had tricked her. she whipped her head around, and glared at Alex. "You tricked me," she shrieked. "Why?"

Alex stared at her and answered. "I did it because I fell in love with you."

Coral just continued glaring. "No you didn't," she laughed bitterly. "All of you humans are all the same. Life ruiners. And so selfish. Did you think about me once? Probably not. Why couldn't you just have left me alone." Coral was mow full on sobbing. Tears were rapidly streaming down her face. without thinking straight behind her tears, and her head clouded with insults she wanted to throw at Alex, she dived in the water

Blackness started to form around Coral's vision. Because she was now a human, instead of a mermaid, she couldn't breathe properly. There was suddenly a bright flash of blinding, white light. Coral closed her eyes as darkness came, and her body fell lifeless and limp, floating like a feather to the ocean's floor, where she rest in peace.
