The room that Lady Nylla provided me was exquisite. Based on the horror stories I had been fed as a child about the Naga race, I had been expected to be treated as food. Perhaps it is only that I saved their queen that they had not yet eaten me. A young maiden entered the room, perhaps a younger sibling of one of the court nobles.

"Your fiancée is waiting for you in the courtyard, " said the lady. "She wants to get to know you better."

"My what? My fiancée?" asked Gwyn.

"Yes, Madam Nylla of the Serpent Clan."

"We've only met a few times! How can she be my fiancée?"

"Miss, don't you know?" The maiden looked confused, then a look of realization spawned on her face. "That necklace you are wearing right now, with the blue opal. When you let Madam Nylla put it on you, you accepted a marriage offer."

"I thought I was accepting a gift of gratitude for saving Madam Nylla! Why would she want to marry a near stranger?"

"To protect you. Unmarried humans don't last long here, so she's repaying your bravery with her protection. I'm actually surprised you made it this long." I had to sit down with shock. My saving the queen wasn't for some noble reason, it was basic courtesy. I was deeply touched that this regal woman, a queen nonetheless, would extend such a great deed to me. The door opened once more.

   "Mistress Gwyn?" called the voice.

"Lady Nylla!" I responded. Out of danger, she was beautiful. Her hair was cropped short, and a lustrous silver that matched the scales running down her tail and sides. She was fairly light, her eyes a deep brown. Perhaps I could get used to the arrangement.
