Nightmares of a Child in the Dark

Skyla woke up to a shrill scream that echoed around her room, it had taken her a moment to realize the sound had emerged from her own lips. She slapped a hand over her mouth and sat up to look around her plain room.

"GO AWAY! Please...Just leave me alone. I just want to sleep." She screamed and sobbed silently. She moved to the corner of her room where her door and wall met. Skyla was so exhausted and tired she had simply wanted to sleep, even when it terrified her. She pulled her knees up to her chest and shook. She looked at the scars on her skin and began to count; one particular scar made her stand suddenly. She began to trash her room."LEAVE ME ALONE!" She screamed picking up a lamp and throwing it through the window before screaming again. "GET OUT! GET OUT GET OUT!" Skyla grabbed her dresser and knocked it over, moving to the bed and stared at her next victim. "STAY OUT OF MY HEAD!"

At the age of three, the twins' parents sold them to an institution for power and wealth. The first few years they were at the institution, they resided in the north wing, the only wing with lights. They were trained to fight with four other humans. As they got older, they started learning how to kill others as well. Slowly, the group of humans drifted apart. Skyla fought harder every time Marcus bested her in a fight; their relationship changed. Instead of pushing each other, they started balancing the other out. When one couldn't fight anymore, the other was there to help them up.

They started thinking as one.Lilith's ears winced as she heard something of distress. Quietly, she moved towards the rooms, but a sharp pain would stop her for a moment before she took careful steps towards her sister's room. Voices seemed to be buzzing in Lilith's head, yet she ignored them and continued forward. Slender digits extend to rake against the bedroom door before a gentle voice would follow.

"Skyla?" She asked in concern.Lilith stood there, stunned for a moment before she would carefully open the door "Skyla dear?" Lilith asked, her concern growing by the second as she stepped into the woman's room, she bit her bottom lip violently, accidentally making it bleed. Skyla's head snapped to Lilith as she smelled the blood. Her eyes her red; no longer her ice blue. She growled not really noticing her sister but the blood.

"Stop..." She said, sounding just as broken as she truly was. She turned in a blur and threw her bed across the room. "STOP!" She screamed again. Marks showed on her skin as if she was reliving her nightmarish childhood. "D-don't..." She fell to her knees as she held her breath trying to block out the blood. The blood spoke to her. Told her it was family. "M-Marcus?" She asked weakly and sobbed. "Marcus...Where are you? I need you..."

By the age of ten, Skyla could fight anything she went up against in battle. Her brother was always behind her; always fighting on her side. They had been living in the main building with an assortment of other children. Vampires, werewolves, demons even elven children. The main building didn't have lights, and the children were only allowed outside for an hour every day. They were not only fighting against each other at every turn, but they also had to survive with the beasts that roamed the building. She had never seen one in the light, so she didn't know exactly what she was fighting with. She had learned to fight in pitch darkness.Skyla was the only child to kill a beast. Her first kill ever was a boy named Gorgon. He was a vampire. Skyla was always reluctant to fight in her early years. As she got older she learned it was kill or be killed.

By the age of thirteen, she had killed over half a dozen other children in her fight to survive. When Skyla was fourteen, they started training with guns, not just daggers and spears. Her first time she ever held a gun, she was in a battle with a demon. When she shot the gun off, it had missed the demon and killed Marcus. She knew it was her brother in the darkness; she had felt the moment he had been shot. Dropping the gun, she ran to where he lay bleeding."Marcus? No." She whispered to him as she found the wound. She tried to shush him as he spoke."Keep fighting, Sky. Don't let them win." He muttered right before he had stopped breathing. An hour later she was rewarded for her latest kill. Something had snapped in her at that point. 'Don't let them win.' those words would stick with her for the rest of her life. Skyla used every chance she could to get out of that institution. Every time they caught her, she was beaten. Every time they had beat her, she became even more determined to get out. Two years after the death of her brother, she had finally made her escape.

"Sk-Skyla?" Lilith looked to her sister, frightened, asking softly and cautiously stepping forward and kneeling next to her sister. Slender arms wrapped around her frame lightly, Lilith completely forgot about the blood that painted itself across her soft lips "H-hey, it's me. I got you," she whispered calmly. Skyla tore herself away from her sister and moved across the room.

"Blood...blood..." She touched the broken window and looked at her hand as it sliced open. She looked at the blood and started touching the white walls. "Blood..." She muttered over and over, no longer comprehensible. She started drawing pictures in the blood of children killing children, adults hurting them; raping them. Of monsters that didn't seem to have a shape."Blood...Blood..." She wasn't' in the villa, she was stuck in her past as she continued her breakdown. Lilith moved to Skyla, quickly throwing her arms around the woman, pulling her close and tight. A low growl fell from her lips.

"Calm down!" she muttered and tried to hold onto her sister, her body shaking as her lip bled. Skyla smelled the blood and whimpered.

"I'm NOT going back! You can't make me! I'm not a child of the dark anymore!" She screamed and tried to struggle away from her sister only to collapse on the ground in a heap sobbing silently. Her hand still bled profusely, which had helped take the fight out of her faster. She looked around her trashed, blood-painted room and then to her hand, and finally Lilith "I-I..." She blinked focusing her eyes. "I-I" She looked at her sister. "I-I'm so sorry Lilith."

Lilith looked towards her sister and said nothing. Gently, she took the woman's hand into hers, and healed it before standing and offering her sister help to stand."Come, let me make you something warm to drink" she murmured gently and lovingly. She tasted the blood on her lip, and cringed, but otherwise ignored it. "I got you, okay?" Skyla took her sister's hand and stood, silently shaking.

"I'm sorry.... Mother will be mad won't she?" she asked quietly. Her voice no louder than a whisper. She looked at Lilith, then around her room. Skyla had been taken in by a woman a couple of years after she escaped the institution, she had gone to her adopted uncle and asked him to turn her into one of the undead. Her memory of the actual event was blurry, she could remember pain and wishing it would stop. She had in the end refused to beg for it to end and simply endured the change she had asked for. She walked from the room quietly, and looked at her sister. "I'll follow you."

Lilith smiled slightly and shook her head before she walked from the room. Skyla closed the door silently and watched her sister."Mother won't be mad, Skyla." She smiled "No. I'll walk beside you." She took Skyla's hand and started down the hall towards the kitchen. Skyla followed slightly behind her sister. They walked into the kitchen, and Skyla moved to the table and sat. Lilith moved towards the counters and got a mug of coffee ready for the both of them, then walked to the table and sat. The girls sat at the table and talked about things to try and calm down. After a few hours of just talking, Lilith had gone off to bed, leaving Skyla in the kitchen alone.

Skyla washed the mugs out and placed them back where they belong. She then turned and walked out of the villa, looking at the moon and smiled slightly to herself. Soon, she found herself walking through a small town. She watched the families scurry around to finish what they were doing so they could get home to their families. She looked in the window of one house and watched the parents chase the small boy and girl with red hair around the house to usher them into bed. She caught herself smiling and went completely still. She knew what she had to do. She didn't want more children to end up where she did. She didn't want families ripped apart due to that place that broke her so long ago.She turned her back toward the house and looked down an alleyway.

She felt the familiar twinges of hunger, and decided she would have to feed before she went on her hunt. She watched a few men walk into the forest to her right and smiled. She never killed when she fed, she always took just enough to survive. She followed them while she thought out her plan. She was going to hunt down every person who owned any part of the institution and kill them. She was also going to kill anyone who worked there and had a hand in the deaths of any of the children. She was a Child of the Dark in more than one way.

They had given the children the nickname when they turned fourteen. Child of the dark, a simple phrase that meant so much. She blinked and followed the three men silently. She smiled, feeling the instinct to hunt kick in. Moving to the men's left, she pulled the smaller man into the shadows, sinking her fangs into his neck. Her eyes closed as she took in his blood. She could hear the other two walk further away, unaware that their friend had disappeared. She felt the man's pulse get lighter, and let him sink to the ground, pulling her head away.

She slowly moved and pulled the second man into the shadows, covering his mouth as he tried to yell. She sank her fangs into his neck, as well, and began taking his blood into her body. She let a small moan slip out, catching the other man's attention. With a silent curse she dropped the second man and launched herself towards the third man. She pinned him against the tree as he tried calling for help, and covered his mouth with her hand. The man bit her hand causing Skyla to growl.

She sunk her fangs into the soft flesh of his shoulder and backed up. Stepping in close one more time, and sunk her fangs into his neck, taking some of his blood as well. She let him sink to the ground and left a note for the man to find his friends. She stepped away and turned towards the shadows of the forest. She would let the men live and remember what happened. She wasn't entirely sure why, but shrugged it off and walked into the shadows.

She was now officially on her hunt and knew where to start. She took in a silent breath and looked back at the three men, seeing them easily in the dark. She closed her eyes and remembered her past. The building she was raised in. She would have to burn it down first and kill any adults inside. She smiled lightly and remembered the beast she had killed so many years ago. She would need to handle those, as well. Then she could go and hunt the rest down. She knew they had to die, and anyone else involved, ensuring another institution would never be built again. She opened her now nearly black eyes and ran off in the direction of the institution, hoping for a blood bath.
