Changing Normality

Sometimes I wish that my world was normal, like the ones we read about in the history textbook. People who cherished diversity in life and could actually choose how their lives panned out. That world was destroyed years ago by a great war. Countries who allied themselves turned on those bonds in a massive competition for blood and power. Our society has learned from their mistakes and have created our own universe, even if no one agrees no alternatives are introduced.

Each year is like it's own class and the class never separated from one another. We go to school until the class reaches the age of sixteen, by then they are put into a section of society where they're most likely to fit in. Military, Education, Government, Maintenance, or Artistry, and with the way my class is shaping up we're going to Maintenance. The boys in my class are always repairing the school lights and the girls are always writing, in multiple languages I might add, on how to do blah-blah-blah. I wish in the end though we get put in Artistry but that is against the majority right now. I may not be the first to wish the class be somewhere I want, but when we get to our Assignment Ceremony they always go with the majority.

Sometimes at night I dream of making pottery or singing to an audience. Even writing a book that everyone will love reading or will make it's way into the Education sector. During the day I try to be like the rest of my class but I can't decipher directions or the tools needed to complete those jobs. It's all a foreign dialect I simply don't understand. My repairs always need someone else to redo because their only "good enough" and isn't "complete". Instead I go to art lectures and English lectures to influence my creative side. Even writing stories during my free time to simply express myself. Most of those stories are about me living in the previous world. No body ever suspected me writing because they knew I was "searching for plumbing equipment".

Our Assignment Ceremony has arrived and we filed inside the Amphitheatre to the seats in front of the stage. On stage right now was our main tutor Mr. Kindler, and the main administrator Mrs. Gratch. A podium was set right in the center and a screen has been set up so the audience will know exactly where they'll see us later in life. A ring of a bell and the ceremony began. Mr. Kindler walked up to the podium and began to give his speech.

"I welcome one and all to our 2397 Assignment Ceremony! Our class has truly been one of a kind, and one I have grown to love like a parent. I would now like for the class of 2397 to join me on stage." Applause continued as we marched silently on stage, looking only to those in front of us.

"To group all of them into one category was difficult. As it is people are always attracted to many mediums, but one among this class would find that if they were placed with the majority of their class they would not succeed. I wish to call Wendy Oliver to stand beside me, so she may be assigned based on her only passion.

Oh my! That's my name! Why is he breaking the tradition? I did as I was told and strode over to stand by Kindler's side. He put his hand on my shoulder and gave me a reassuring squeeze. "For Wendy I would like to observe her attention to detail and creativity, for these qualities I recommend the tradition be changed to let her enter the Artistry sector. As for the rest of the class they will be assigned to the Maintenance sector of our society."

Only time will tell if I even get to see the outside world again.
