Therefore, they could not directly program the robot's speech processes themselves, for fear of being unrealistic. The creators decided to generate the speech from a complex machine learning algorithm, but were in disagreement about what the input should be. This turned out to be both a blessing and a curse. The robot was able to connect with teenagers in a way never seen before. However, it did little to actually help them—rather, it tended to initiate heated debates about social justice, fandom culture, and memes.
