•Sixty-Eight
Jimin becomes still before the nurse's desk. His feet became rooted to the floor with his breathing becoming rigid. His expression was nothing but blank, yet his eyes held confusion.
He processed the words you spoke, I'm going to save him. Jimin knew who you meant but what didn't understand how. How were you going to save Jungkook?
He scans your face once more seeing relief in your eyes yet as he looks closer there was a hint of sadness. He frowns slightly in puzzlement, why was that?
He clears his throat, "What do you mean?" He asks. "Did you find a donor?"
Jimin tries his best to cover the hope in his voice. In these circumstances there was no guarantee there will be one on such short notice. But as he watches you nod with a small smile he allows the hope to surface itself on his face.
"Yes," you answer softly while clenching your fists.
You still couldn't believe you had the same type of lungs as Jungkook. It seemed too coincidental in your opinion. But no matter how many times you stared at that screen the numbers wouldn't change. You were a match.
"Are you sure?" Jimin asks skeptically.
"Yes," the nurse answers for you bringing you back to your senses.
"Come and see," you gesture for Jimin with a hand.
He hesitates for a moment before scurrying around the desk and to your side. He leans forward with his eyes narrowed as he stares at the screen. His eyes scan left and right as he skims through Jungkook's file and someone else's.
He realizes the information was the same, there truly was a donor for Jungkook. A relieved, airy chuckle escapes Jimin's lips with a small smile cracking the corner of his lips.
"I can't believe it," he breathes. "He can be saved. Jungkook is---" His voice suddenly trails off when his eyes land on the center of the donor's file.
He blinks once. Twice. The smile upon his lips slowly disappears replacing with a frown.
"Wait a minute . . ."
In bold lettering, he saw a familiar name. Your name. Jimin's face becomes immensely pale while the relief feeling changes into confusion and horror.
His heart sinks into his stomach leaving an aching pain in his chest. Questions swirl endlessly in his mind, he had no idea how to word them all together. He couldn't speak without everything pouring out.
With great effort, he pushes away from the desk his back still turned to you. Only one word leaves his lips barely in a whisper.
"Why?"
You watch him turn around. His eyes filled with unwavering horror, his lips slightly agape.
"Why?" He repeats. "Why is your name on there?"
You take in a breath forming your face into a neutral expression. "I'm the donor, Jimin," you tell him softly. "I'll be the one giving him my lungs."
A minute passes, then another. Jimin stares at you widely as if he saw a ghost. Your words didn't immediately sink in but when it did it fell like hell on earth for him. It was like a car crashed into him, and he knew damn well he would rather deal with that than this.
He swallows thickly feeling his fists shake uncontrollably. He can't believe this. He couldn't. Slowly he shakes his head in denial.
"No," he mumbles. "You can't be serious." He states in disbelief. "Tell me you're lying."
You stare at him wordlessly allowing your silence to speak for itself. A sudden strong urge to punch something overwhelms Jimin. Anger replaces fear, his blood boils hotly under his skin. His heart beating faster each second.
"No," he repeats as he grits his teeth. "No! Jisun you can't!" He shouts.
"Why not?" You question with a look. "I'm saving him!"
"You're not thinking straight!" He shoots with a glare.
Maybe he was right. Maybe you weren't thinking straight. But maybe that was good.
You were able to figure out a way to keep Jungkook from dying. Yet, you didn't understand Jimin's anger. He should be happy about this. His best friend is going to live.
"Yeah, maybe I'm not," you agree. "But that doesn't matter. What matters is that he's going to live."
You completely lost it. Jimin stares at you in shock feeling the pain in his chest deepen. Firmly he places his hands upon your shoulders looking you with a hard stare.
"Jisun," he begins calmly. "I understand you're hurting. I am too. We all are. But that doesn't mean you go and do something reckless."
Your eyes widen in shock, your lips forming a thin line. "Reckless?" You breathe feeling your chest rise and fall quickly.
"I'm not being reckless!!"
You shrug off his grip and stand back with a furious expression. "I'm doing what's right, Jimin!" You yell at your brother.
"But you're giving your life away, Jisun!" Jimin yells. "You have a life to live!"
"Oh, so Jungkook doesn't?!" You accuse with a glare.
"That's not what I said!"
"You implied it!"
A loud groan escapes his lips and Jimin looks away with his to his poking his inner cheek. "Look," he turns to you attempting to calm down his temper.
"It's always okay to do the right thing but there are times like this you can't."
"And why not?" You challenge. "How is saving Jungkook bad?! Why is the one thing I desperately want to do you refuse like a---"
"Because I can't lose you!!" Jimin shouts over you.
He breathes heavily with his teeth bared while his shoulders rise and fall dramatically. The anger inside you immediately fades when you see a lone tear fall down Jimin's cheek. You stare at him in shock, words fail you for you couldn't speak no matter how hard you tried.
The rage in his eyes lessens allowing the fear and anguish show. He releases many shaky breathes as he tries his best to stop his stupid tears. But they roll down his cheeks quicker leaving him a crying mess.
"I can't lose my baby sister," he rasps. "You mean so much to me Jisun. Despite your annoying antics, you were always there for me. You're the sister I always wanted from the moment when you were born. I promised myself I would protect you from anyone or anything."
He wipes away a tear with the palm of his hand while his bottom lip trembles. "And I can't do that if you do this."
You don't respond, your body becoming still when you listen to his words. Your tears surface and fall down your cheeks freely. With shaky legs, you go up to Jimin giving him a tight hug.
With his arms around your back, you bury your face in his chest like when you were younger.
"Please," you hear him beg. "Let me keep my promise."
You cry silently remembering each memory with your older brother. His love for you was greater than any older sibling could be to a younger. It pained you to see him like this.
But you are willing to see Jimin cry, to see him get hurt. You were willing to do this to the others if it meant keeping him alive.
You hold Jimin tighter knowing this could be the last hug you'll have. Jimin knew it too, no matter much he denies it or begs for you listen it would all be in vain. Your mind was made up.
Slowly you pull away and stare up at him. "I'm sorry, brother," you apologize softly. "But Jungkook is important to me and I'll do whatever it takes to keep him alive."
Words fail Jimin, his quiet sobs were the only sounds coming from his lips. You try to smile and reach to wipe a tear.
"Don't cry, Jimin," you say. "I'll still be with you, just don't forget about me. Okay?"
A heartless chuckle escapes his lips with a sad smile forming. "How can I?" He questions. "You're very hard to forget. Especially that dense mind of yours."
You give him a playful punch emitting small chuckles from the both of you. He releases a breath and looks to the side.
"So how is this going to work?" He asks. "Do you show the paperwork to Dr. Chen or something?"
"Precisely."
You both glance at the nurse who held papers in her hands. "I printed them just in case," she quickly says when she sees your questioning gaze. "I wasn't sure if you wanted to go through with this."
You give her a curt nod. "I want to," you affirm.
She nods back and walks around the desk. "I'll go show these to Dr. Chen right away." You watch her scurry down the hall until you hear a small sigh from Jimin.
"I'm going to tell everyone of this," he informs. "It's best they know now instead of when you walk to the surgery room."
You release a breath imagining the reactions from everyone. Especially your parents. Your heart aches at the thought and you shake it off quickly.
"Alright," you tell Jimin. He gives your head a small pat before walking off.
You were now let alone unsure of what to do now. You look around noticing a few people glancing in your direction. Realizing you still stood behind the desk you quickly swerve to the front.
Your hands lay upon the desk's exterior as you stare blankly at the wooden surface. You pinch your lips together while you try to steady your heart rate. Despite your decision anxiousness swirls within you no matter how hard you try to push it away.
You're helping Jungkook, he was going to live because of you. But the thought of not staying by his side forever taints your mind. You want to go to places with him, listen to his wonderful voice, make him smile.
It pained you that none of those would ever happen but it was alright. At least he gets a second chance.
You notice a piece of paper on the desk and slowly grab it. Taking the nearest pen you begin to write. This was the least you could do, you could at least tell him why you did this.
When you finish you release a shaky breath as you place down the pen. You grab your phone and pop off the case. You stare at the small picture atop your phone and smile sadly to yourself.
"Don't do this."
Your eyes widen in surprise and quickly you whirl to the direction of the voice. Only a few feet away from you stood Taehyung. He stares at you with desperation layering his beautiful brown eyes with his lips pulled down to a frown.
Your lips become dry for you became speechless at the sight of him. You thought he left a long time ago.
"Wha--what are you doing here?" You sputter as you quickly fold the paper. "I thought you left."
"I didn't," he answers with a frown. "I couldn't leave you."
He takes huge strides towards you until there was only a foot between the two of you. "Jisun, please don't do this," he pleas while grasping your free hand.
"I have to," you tell him softly. "I need to save--"
"No, you don't!" He shouts before shaking his head. "You don't need to save him. This is his fate, not yours. Don't waste your life on him."
You swallow hard at his words before glancing away. "How can you be like that, Taehyung?" You whisper. "Especially now. He deserves to live."
"So do you, Jisun!" He exclaims and tightens his grip. "You have dreams and goals, don't just throw them all away for someone like him!"
"Someone like him is the person I love, Taehyung!" You yell angrily and yank your hand away from him.
"But I need you, Jisun!" Taehyung says frantically. "I need you in my life! It's the only way I can keep going!"
You shake your head in disappointment while biting the inside of your cheek. "So," you breathe with your stare becoming hard. "You're only trying to stop me for your own needs. Not because I'm being reckless?" You emphasize the last word remembering Jimin.
Taehyung hesitates only for a moment before releasing a sigh. "I'm debuting soon and I want you to be there when it happens."
Your shake your head with a half-hearted smile. He was never going to change.
"You really are selfish, Taehyung," you mutter coldly. You back away from him with your heart dropping.
"No matter what situation someone is in you always put yourself first. It's shameful," you spat.
Taehyung could feel his heart pound furiously against his chest with his breathing rate increases. Quickly you turn your back on him and walk towards Jungkook's room.
"Jisun, wait!" Taehyung calls to you desperately.
You glance over your shoulder and stare at him in pity wishing this wasn't how things would end. You hoped to recover the damage you both inflicted upon one another. But it seems that would never happen.
"I wish for the best for you, Taehyung," you tell him. "And I hope you'll find that person who you can be selfless too."
You turn away leaving Taehyung to himself as he watches you heading towards the group of people waiting for you. He could feel an overwhelming surge of anxiety to take control of his body. He grips the desk tightly refusing to fall on his knees.
Somehow he felt cold under his coat, his heart slowly stops beating as he loses all feeling over his entire body. With dull eyes he watches you hug your parents, your friends, then Jimin before walking away with a few nurses and a doctor.
He bends over while rasping out uneven breaths. He wanted to scream, he wanted to yell for you to come back. But his voice fails him, instead unsteady sob bubbles through his lips.
Now he was truly alone, you left him for good. He couldn't understand it, he couldn't understand why.
He squeezes his eyes shut refusing to stare in your direction any longer. He allows his tears to fall. He allows himself to crumble in public not caring who was watching.
What was the point when you left him all alone in his never-ending darkness.
