Will sat in his chair again, raising the last of his tea to knock back. "Dylan and I are looking for a place to stay. Your mother says you have a flat?"
Jan looked surprised. "Aye, actually I do. The latest tenants vacated two weeks ago, and I've only just now gotten the place cleaned up." She rubbed her pregnant belly and winked at me. "I'm moving a little slower these days."
"Do you own many flats? Do you need help? I'm a good worker and will be looking for a job," I said. I nodded to Will, "And he's actually handier than he looks if you're looking for a repairman."
"I'll make a note of that," she said, accepting the tea and scone from her mother. "I definitely could use someone in the office if that's your thing. Once the baby is born, I'm hoping to work less. My husband Christopher usually takes care of the repairs and things, but we're getting ready to acquire a new building. We might could use the help."
"I'm happy to help in the office," I assured her. "When might we come by and see the flat?"
"Oh, we can go immediately if you want. I only came to drop off some paperwork and see me mum for a wee bit. I'm heading right back. You can follow me."
I let Will work his mind magic, weaving a tale of why we didn't have a working vehicle and managing to fandangle a ride with her. I never understood how he did it, but it was one of his demon skills. People just seemed to go along with what he said, taking it as truth. I wondered vaguely where we'd get the money to pay for a flat and such until a paycheck was coming in, but that was another thing he always took care of. He seemed to have money tucked away everywhere; why would late 20th-century Scotland be any different?
We chatted a bit more as Jan finished her scone and tea. When she was done, she looked at me. "So, are we ready?"
I smiled and nodded. "Yes, thank you."
She said her goodbyes, and the three of us piled into her car and headed to Inverness. It was about a twenty-minute ride through the highlands until we started to see signs of modern civilization. The city was small compared to what I was used to, but if it hid me from my father, I wasn't going to complain.
We headed straight for the flat. It was in a quaint neighborhood that was nice and quiet. When she opened the door, she asked, "I hope a one-bedroom is what you are looking for."
My jaw clenched, and I narrowed my eyes at Will as he exclaimed, "Yes! Perfect!"
