chapter 3(2)

The children often reminisced about the past, recalling how their father used to be the pillar of the family. He was always full of laughter and words of encouragement, a source of hope for their mother and for them. But now, he was a shadow of his former self, distant and cold. The stark transformation weighed heavily on the children's minds.

At first, they simply felt disappointed, wondering if wealth had stripped their father of his honest and humble nature. Or perhaps, they thought, he had only pretended to be a good man because of their poverty. The difference in opinions among the siblings caused rising tensions within the family. Each child grappled with their own interpretation of the truth, adding to the complexity of the situation.

One fateful day, only the eldest son and youngest child were home. Everyone else was busy outside, either tending to their duties or managing other matters. The two siblings cared for their ailing mother as dark clouds gathered ominously in the sky.

Without warning, a violent storm rolled in, bringing heavy rain and fierce winds. Several houses managed by the family in the nearby area were severely damaged. Wanting to help, the siblings ventured into the old storage room, hoping to find supplies to aid the affected villagers.

As they searched, a black cat appeared out of nowhere, meowing incessantly. Its behavior was strange—it pawed at a specific corner of the room, drawing their attention. Curious and unsettled, they investigated further. At first glance, there was nothing unusual, just a pile of forgotten items. But after closer inspection, they discovered a hidden opening—a gap leading to what appeared to be a lower level of the house they had never known existed.

Despite a growing sense of dread, the two siblings mustered their courage and climbed down. The air became colder with each step, and a spine-chilling silence enveloped them. Suddenly, an ear-piercing scream shattered the quiet, freezing them in place.

"Did you hear that?" whispered the youngest, trembling.
