Twenty-Eight: Surprise
Seokjin had decided to be hospitable and introduce himself to his new co-star. He knocked on her trailer door, not before noticing that Norma's stenciled name had been covered with a hastily-printed sign that read 'Annelise Kane.' Maybe her stint was to be temporary as well.
A pretty blonde girl opened the door and looked at him.
"Miss Kane? Hello. I wanted to welcome you to the set."
The girl shook her head. "Oh, no. I'm n-not Miss Kane. I'm the--the makeup artist. You're...you're..." The girl started to hyperventilate.
"Sally, who is it?" a disembodied voice called from inside the trailer.
The blonde girl gasped. "Oh! Miss Kane, it's...uh...Kim...I mean, Mr. Kim S-Seokjin."
"Well, let him in!"
The girl opened the door wider and stepped back. "Can I get you anything, Mr. Kim...sir?"
Seokjin would have answered her, but the minute his eyes fell on Miss Annelise Kane, his jaw practically hit the floor.
"Surprise!"
"Anna?"
"Hi, Jin."
Seokjin finally closed his mouth. "Oh, my God! I can't believe it's you." He rushed to hug her, but stopped before actually doing so. Instead his hand fell on her shoulder, and he patted it awkwardly.
"I'm sorry. I don't want to ruin your makeup or anything," he said quickly.
"That's all right. Sally's a genius. She'll fix me up in no time," Anna said with a quick smile toward the flustered blonde girl. "Can you give us a minute?"
The girl nodded and rushed out the door.
"Anna, I can't believe it."
Anna laughed lightly. "So you keep saying. Have a seat please. Gosh, you look amazing! No wonder all the women go crazy over you."
He smiled. "Stop that. I want to know why you didn't tell me about this."
"I was going to tell you, but I wanted it to be a surprise. I wasn't sure if you knew it was me."
Seokjin shook his head. "No. I had no idea. Annelise Kane?"
Anna swiveled her chair to face him. "Still close to my name, but the agency thought I needed something more exotic-sounding than Anna. Namjoon came up with it."
Seokjin felt his jaw tighten. "Namjoon? Is that your...your boyfriend?"
"Namjoon is my agent," she said. "You met him the night you won your award. He's been so good to me, such a good friend. He takes care of me and has been involved in every single decision made about my career. It was Namjoon who thought it would be good for me to try acting." She paused and raised an eyebrow. "Are you telling me you've never seen any of my pictures or ads? I'm hurt."
He fidgeted on the small couch. "I've been really busy." He couldn't tell her that Norma would have a coronary if she ever saw him look at another woman's picture, much less a model. "Working almost nonstop. Not much time."
"Yeah." She nodded. "I guess you have eyes for no one but Norma King."
"Uh, something like that," he mumbled. "But, wow! Anna, you look amazing! Although you're so thin."
"Now you've come to the real reason why I thought I'd try acting," she chuckled. "I actually get to eat now. I think I gained a few pounds to be considered for this role."
He looked aghast. "You mean you were thinner? What the hell, Anna? Aren't you taking care of yourself? I thought your agent took care of you."
She chuckled. "Jin, you're thinner than I remember you, too. Why is that?"
He shrugged. "It's written into our contracts that we have to stay within certain limits, you know, for the camera...oh!" He looked at her with understanding. "I imagine it's the same for models."
Anna nodded once. "Oh, my dear, you have no idea! Sometimes we don't eat for days before a shoot. I once survived on water and one protein bar for a week! At least you get to work out--you look great, by the way. We had to make sure not to have pesky muscles in places that would ruin the lines of the clothes. I had my first real meal in months after Namjoon told me I'd be working on this movie."
Seokjin exhaled. "I hope you don't think we feast every day. The catering is mostly enjoyed by the crew. The actors usually keep to the fruits and veggies during filming." He smiled. "Still, you look incredible. You've already created quite a buzz on set. One of the other actors said he was dying to meet you. Be careful. He's quite the ladies' man."
"I think I can handle myself around good looking guys."
He glanced at her then quickly averted his eyes. "You sure?"
"Sure. But tell me the truth. You don't think this is too much?" she asked, holding up one of her pigtails. "It's bad enough that I have to pass for seventeen, but I hate that they made me up to look like a cut-rate Lolita. Can you believe this costume?" She stood up to indicate the hip-hugging pants and crop top she was wearing for today's scene. "What part of this screams innocent girl?"
Seokjin couldn't stop his eyes from admiring her figure. Why had he never noticed how incredible Anna's body proportions were? He could feel his face getting hot. He shouldn't be looking at his friend like that. She wasn't just some object. She was the smartest girl—no, woman—he knew. He had nothing but respect for her. Yet, when she looked like that...
"You'll be every teenage boy's...dream," he said in a strangely tight voice. She no longer looked like his best friend.
