Thirty: New York
"So, how does it feel to be a movie star?" Taehyung asked as he glanced up from the menu.
Anna had joined him for a quick dinner after her first few days of shooting. She shook her head with a laugh. "Movie star? Hardly. I've shot maybe five minutes worth of film. I don't think I'll be a movie star for a long time to come...if ever."
The waitress came to take their order, and they smiled at each other over the menus.
"I can't wait to see you in your first ever movie," he said once the waitress left. "Is this a career that you'd like to pursue?"
She sighed. "I don't know yet. It depends how this turns out. In some ways it's easier than being a teacher or a model. In other ways, it's completely so much more messed up. I don't know how Seokjin puts up with all of it."
Taehyung observed her for a moment. "Did you want to get into acting because of Seokjin?"
"What? Oh, no. No!" Anna shook her head, her eyes wide. "Of course not. This was just something that fell into my lap. My agent thought it'd be a good next move, but I can always change my mind." She smiled. "Anyway, you said you wanted to tell me something. That's why we're here, so spill."
He smiled. "Anna, I'm moving to New York---"
"New York? Why?" she interrupted him.
"Hold on. Let me tell you. I got an offer to join a firm that does book and magazine layouts. They liked my photos and want me to work for them. And if I do well, I can even become a partner." He paused. "It's an incredible opportunity."
Anna's smile was shaky. "B-But...New York? What about your family? Your mom in Nevada? Are you just going to move thousands of miles away?"
Taehyung reached out and took her hand. "I'm not just running off. I thought a lot about it. My uncle lives in upstate New York, and he wants my mom---his sister---to stay with him and his family. She'll be just a few hours away from me, and she'll be with family. My sister is okay with it, and she plans to visit whenever she can."
"But...New York is so far," she said sadly.
He squeezed her hand. "Well, what do you think about moving to New York? If you're serious about acting, you can do lots of it there. You can be on TV shows. You can do stage acting. The possibilities are endless."
She stared at him. "You're asking me to move to New York? With...you?"
He shrugged. "Well, you don't have to live with me, if that's what you mean. But, yeah, I'm asking if you'd like to. I really like you, Anna. I think our friendship is one of the best things in my life, and sometimes I wonder if it can blossom into something else."
Anna inhaled. "I-I don't know what to say, Tae. I mean, I think you're a great guy."
"Oh," he replied, his face looking dejected.
"No, don't take it like that," she said. "You are a wonderful, handsome guy. I love having you as my friend. The truth is that I haven't thought about anything beyond friendship. I'll have to think about it for a bit. It's unexpected, you know, moving to New York and all that."
"I hope you'll at least consider it. You don't have to decide now, of course."
"Of course," she repeated absently. Her mind was already racing through possibilities. Taehyung had always been kind and considerate with her. She knew she could always count on him. But could it turn into something else? Should she try to think of him as something more?
"That's all I ask," he replied. "Just think about it."
"When do you leave?"
"In three weeks, but you can take as much time as you need to decide."
She nodded and patted his hand. She really did like Taehyung, but her mind kept going back to Seokjin. She couldn't imagine living away from him. But he had Norma, and she had nobody. Now here was Tae asking her to be with him. How could she refuse?
