Ten: Can't Be Friends

Anna sat at the table in the teacher's lounge with Hoseok, her usual lunch partner, and Yoongi, who occasionally left the music room to eat.

"So, let me get this straight." Hoseok leaned forward. "For the past couple of days, Kim Seokjin has been staying at your apartment. Kim Seokjin the actor? The one all the women scream about because of that new movie?"

I nodded. "Yes. Just don't tell anybody."

He grinned. "And I suppose you two are, like, an item? No more lonely nights in the bedroom for you, I'll bet. I heard that he knows his way around a woman's body."

"Hey!" Yoongi spoke up. "A little respect here. Anna's not like that, you know."

Hoseok looked at him then at me. "No, she's not. But Kim Seokjin is. What do you think he was doing while he lived with that older actress?"

"Hobi, please." Anna shook her head. "Whatever was going on with them is none of our business. Seokjin's my best friend from way back, and he needed some help. I don't care what he did, I would never turn my back on him."

"No, you shouldn't." Hoseok exhaled. "He's liable to bend you over the table."

"Hoseok!" Yoongi frowned at him. "I know Seokjin, too. He'd never disrespect her."

He busied himself with his sandwich. "Look, Anna. I don't think it's possible for men and women to be just friends."

"You're nuts." Yoongi put his soda can down. "You honestly think that we can't be friends with Anna? Then what are we doing now?"

Hoseok rolled his eyes. "We are colleagues. Our only interactions have to do with work, so it's a professional relationship."

"So, if I ask Anna to go have coffee with me...?" Yoongi stared at him.

"In the back of your mind, you'd be thinking something else," Hoseok finished for him. "I mean, look at her. She's gorgeous!"

I scoffed.

"Oh, so we could only be friends if she was ugly." Yoongi chuckled. "You're an ass."

Hoseok looked offended. "I'm not. I'm being truthful." He turned to Anna. "I'm not trying to offend you in any way, but you're an extremely beautiful woman. What man would not be attracted to you?" He glanced around the lounge at the few other teachers eating there. "I can guarantee you that every man in this room right now envies Yoongi and me."

Anna exhaled. "Yoongi's right. You're an ass. I'm sitting here with you guys. I'm not thinking about having sex with either of you."

"But you can't speak for us," Hoseok said

"Hobi!" Anna looked at Yoongi to see his reaction. "Yoongi, is this true?"

Yoongi looked away, shaking his head. "Don't make me answer that."

"You just did." She pouted. "I can't believe I'm hearing this from my friends...or aren't you my friends any more?"

"Of course we are," Hoseok chimed in. "But didn't you ever watch When Harry Met Sally? When a man and a woman say they're friends, the man is always thinking that there might be more to it one day."

Anna shook her head. "So, you're taking life advice from a movie? Maybe Seokjin should move in with you since the movie industry means so much to you."

"Well, sure," Hoseok began, spooning some food into his mouth, "maybe that way he won't be thinking up ways to get you into bed."

"He's not thinking that. He never would," Anna insisted.

Hoseok and Yoongi looked at each other, then turned to her.

"Oh, yes he would."

She was disappointed that Yoongi didn't object. "Maybe I should just walk around in a potato sack or a muumuu."

"Your clothing won't make much of a difference," Hoseok said. "It'll just make men think about what's underneath even more. Face it. For men, sex is a 24/7 type of thing."

"I think both of you are insane. Jin's been my best friend since we were kids. I can't believe he spends his time thinking about having sex with me." She looked down, hoping her face wasn't pink. She had to keep reminding herself that Jin was her friend, only a friend.
