Sixty-Three: Anna's Safety
"Mr. Kim?" The receptionist's eyes grew round. "How...how may I help you?"
Seokjin smiled at her, knowing how that would affect her. "Hello. I need to see Kim Namjoon."
"Uh," the young woman gulped. "Uh, do you...do you have an appointment...sir?" Her eyes blinked rapidly. She couldn't hide the admiration in them.
He leaned his arm on the high desk. "I don't have an appointment, but if you could let him know I'm here, I'm sure he'll see me. Can you do that for me?" He flashed her another half smile.
"Oh, yes," she said in a breathy voice. "I will let him know. Just one minute. Don't go. Just one minute."
He heard her murmur into the phone as he looked around the lobby. He wondered if Anna had gotten his message. This was important, and he wanted to make sure both of them knew.
"Mr. Kim? Sir?" the young woman called out. "Would you mind waiting here? Mr. Kim Namjoon is just finishing up a meeting. Can I get you anything? Coffee? Water?"
"I'm fine," he replied with a nod. He looked at the front door and wondered why there wasn't more security. There was a guard standing outside, but the door didn't require a passkey or anything like that. There were two young women sitting at the large desk. Next to the desk was a locked turnstile, but that couldn't possibly keep a determined person out.
A soft ding made him look toward the row of elevators. Kim Namjoon appeared. He walked briskly toward him. "Daisy," he said, and the turnstile buzzed.
Seokjin walked through it. "We need to talk."
Namjoon looked down at him from his slight height advantage. "Fine. Let's go up to my office."
The elevator ride was silent. They got off on the sixth floor, and Namjoon led the way to his office. Once inside, he shut the door and whirled around to face the handsome man.
"Well, what is it?"
Seokjin pursed his lips. "Good to see you, too. I think we should sit down."
"Will this take long?" Namjoon asked in a clipped voice. He clearly did not want to speak with Seokjin longer than he had to. He recalled hearing Anna's confession about her powerful attraction for this man before him, and it still rankled him. She never knew that he heard her even though he was not fully conscious. He knew that Seokjin had revealed his past to Anna, and while the blame for the breakup was not all on Seokjin, he resented him.
Seokjin moved elegantly to a chair and sat down. "Can we put whatever issues we have aside? This is about Anna's safety."
Namjoon scowled and sat down behind his desk. "Her safety? What are you talking about?"
"I received a strange text from Norma King—well, all of her texts are strange—but this one alarmed me." The handsome man placed his phone on the desk and pushed it toward the serious man.
Namjoon picked it up and read the message. "She sent this to you? When?"
Seokjin inhaled. "So late last night that it was early this morning. I saw it when I woke up."
My dearest, why do you refuse to speak to me? I love you. I need you in my life. It is all her fault for taking you away from me. I know I have to get her away from you. I almost did, but that stupid model fucked it all up. She's too hung up on what happened to that stupid meathead agent and couldn't do the job right. Don't worry, my treasure. I will free you from that slut's clutches. She will be gone for good this time, and you will be mine again. This time I will do it myself.
Namjoon shook his head. "Is she really threatening to hurt Anna?"
Seokjin nodded. "I would say so. She is planning something, but I don't know what or when. She mentioned trying something before. I assume she's talking about the car accident, and you're the, uh, meathead agent?"
Namjoon scowled at him again, but then his face showed concern. "Have you shown this to anybody else? The police? Anna?"
"No, not yet. I want to tell her first. I didn't think she would listen to me, so I had one of her friends tell her to come here to your office. I hope she's on her way." Seokjin stared at Namjoon. "Did you know anything about this? The model she's talking about—Sylvie, right?---did she tell you anything having to do with Norma? Were they trying to hurt Anna before?"
Namjoon lowered his gaze. "I can't be certain of anything, but I think it involved Norma. I saw both of them at the scene of the accident before I passed out. I thought I'd hallucinated, but why would I imagine seeing Norma King? While I was in the hospital, Sylvie came by to see me. She didn't tell me outright, but I gathered that someone was trying to get rid of Anna and recruited Sylvie to help her. Over time, I figured it was Norma."
"Then why didn't you say anything? You didn't report it!" Seokjin exclaimed angrily.
"I was going to. I did tell Anna of my suspicions, but I asked her not to say anything. After I spoke to Sylvie, I felt more confused than ever. I was afraid to say anything because it would implicate her as well, and she begged me not to take her away from her son."
The handsome man shot to his feet. "And what about Anna? You'd let Norma take Anna away from you? Do you even care about her at all?"
Namjoon also stood up. "Of course I care about her. I love her, but I have no proof that Norma was behind the accident."
"You said you saw her there."
Namjoon shook his head. "I was hurt. Anyone could say that I imagined the whole thing. I don't know if that would be considered evidence. Besides, I don't want to implicate Sylvie—"
"Goddammit, Namjoon!" Seokjin interrupted him loudly. "Right now this is about Anna's safety. Don't you understand? How dare you stay quiet about this?"
"Quiet about what?"
They both turned toward the door to see Anna closing it behind her.
"What's with the yelling? You're actually yelling about being quiet. I hope you two aren't fighting about anything stupid." She stared at both of them. "What is going on?"
Both men glanced at each other then looked away, not able to meet Anna's gaze.
"Anna. Please sit down," Namjoon finally said.
