Sixty-Four: Loving and Devoted Fans
Anna sat in silent stillness staring at the phone. She was numb after reading the rambling text Norma had sent Seokjin the night before. Namjoon repeated what he'd told her last time about thinking that Norma was behind the car accident. Her mind couldn't quite register what they'd said. The details seemed fuzzy. The only thing she got out of it was that Norma King was trying to hurt her. No. Norma King wanted her dead. The thought alone made her insides go cold, and she shivered.
Seokjin noticed her shaking and sat down next to her. He put his arm around her shoulders, pried the phone from her hands, and pulled her into his chest. "It's okay, Anna. We won't let anything happen to you. We'll come up with a plan." His eyes looked up at Namjoon.
"Yes, of course. Nothing will happen to you, my love," Namjoon said. "I won't let Norma hurt you." He noticed Seokjin's glare. "We won't let her hurt you." He nodded and went back to sit behind his desk. "Okay, then. Tell me, does Norma know where you live?"
Anna inhaled raggedly. "Uh, no. I don't think so."
Namjoon scribbled something on a notepad. "Good. That's good. What about you, Seokjin? Does Norma know where you live? Has she gone over, you know, spent the night?"
Seokjin pressed his lips together to keep from saying anything he shouldn't. "Of course not. I've never told her where I live now. That's why she keeps calling."
"Uh-huh. When was the last time either of you saw her or spoke with her?"
Anna shook her head. "I-I haven't seen her for months, since before the awards show. I can't even remember."
Seokjin gulped after she went quiet. They were waiting for his response. "Me? I saw her just last week. I ran into her at a restaurant."
"Did you speak with her?" Namjoon asked, looking up from his notepad. "Did she say anything to you that might help us here?"
"N-No," Seokjin stuttered. "She didn't mention Anna."
After another pause, Anna exhaled. "Well, what did she say?"
Seokjin glanced at her. "She just, well, she said she wants me back. She said she'll never give up and—"
"Oh, my God, she's insane," Anna interrupted him. "She's never giving up. Did she say anything else? Think."
"She sent me the text I showed you. I know she's insane."
Anna shrugged off his arm and got to her feet. "She wants to kill me. She said so. Can't we just take that to the police?"
Namjoon sighed. "She mentions Sylvie."
"She wants to kill me, Joon!" Anna exclaimed, her voice trembling. "You just want to pretend she didn't threaten me?"
Namjoon sighed loudly. "No, of course not. I didn't mean we wouldn't do anything about it. I just need to think for a minute."
Anna paced the room. "Think? Think about what? She's going to kill me. I can't wait around for her to do it."
Seokjin got up and intercepted her. He held her arms. "Annie, she's crazy, but I don't think she's a killer. I think she's just losing her grip, and she's saying shit that doesn't make sense."
Anna pushed him away. "Listen to you two." She glared at Namjoon. "You're more interested in helping Sylvie even though she was in on their stupid plot to hurt me. She's not innocent in this." She turned to Seokjin. "And you! You're still defending Norma as if you don't know what she's capable of. How can you possibly know she's not a killer if you admit she's crazy?"
"Anna," Namjoon began. He walked out from behind his desk.
She shook her head. "No. There's nothing you can say that will make me feel better except that you're going to call the police. And if you won't do it, then I will." She marched angrily to the door and threw it open.
A buzz of conversation and some applause filtered into the office. It seemed as if the employees were cheering for something or someone.
Anna began backing away from the door as Namjoon and Seokjin took a step toward her.
"What is—?" Namjoon's words died on his lips.
"Good afternoon, everyone. You are just the people I wanted to see."
"How did you get in here?" Namjoon demanded. Anna and Seokjin stayed silent.
"Oh, I hope you don't mind. Your staff was very accommodating, such loving and devoted fans. I even signed some autographs. I am Norma King, after all." Norma smiled at them as if they were her loving and devoted fans.
