Anna left Rebecca's office at the Exemplar Talent Agency. Out of habit, she looked down the second hall to the right, where Namjoon's office was located. She knew that out of consideration for her, he would make sure to be out on the days that Anna met with her agent.
She stood at the foot of the hall, staring absently toward his door. She hadn't been face to face with him for so long. How did they wind up like this? Just six months ago, she thought she had her life planned out by his side. Now she was back to square one. Without being conscious of it, she sighed.
"He's in today."
Anna gave a startled jump and turned her head. A young woman holding several file folders was standing next to her. "Excuse me?"
The young woman's eyes registered panic before she gulped. "Uh, you're Annelise Kane. I thought you were looking for Mr. Kim." She paused. "I've seen your picture in his office."
Anna inhaled. "So, he's in, huh?" At the girl's nod, she thanked her and began striding down the hall toward his office. His secretary's desk was empty, so she walked up to his door and knocked twice.
"Come in."
She lifted her trembling chin higher and opened the door. He had his back to the door as he held his phone to his ear. He was talking rapidly to the person on the other end of the line. Anna stood frozen, staring at him. She saw him tap his desk twice loudly before lifting his hand as if he were asking for something. She looked around, wondering if his secretary had walked in, but there was no one behind her.
"Hold on, Harry," Namjoon said into the phone. "Janie, just leave the files here and..." He spun around on his chair and gasped. He almost dropped his phone. "I'll call you back," he said hurriedly before hanging up his call. His eyes never left Anna.
"Hi," she said softly.
He rose to his feet slowly. "Anna. How...how are you?"
"Uh, I'm fine. I had a meeting with Becca and—"
"Oh, shit," he said to himself. "I mean, I forgot to look at the schedule. I would've been out of the office if I'd known. I'm sorry about this." He glanced down.
"No," she said. "Don't be sorry. It's okay. You don't have to disappear every time I enter the building. This is your agency, after all."
He inhaled. "Yes, I know, but I also said I'd respect your privacy and your decision to break up. I don't want you to feel uncomfortable coming to see Becca." He paused. "Uh, would you like to sit down?"
She nodded and took one of the large chairs opposite his desk. "How have you been?"
He sat down again. "Uh, good, I guess. You look good. How's...Seokjin?"
She looked down. "I don't know. We haven't spoken in months."
"Oh." He nodded and interlaced his fingers on top of his desk. "I see. I'm sorry."
"It's okay, Namjoon," she said. "It's not the end of the world. I decided to just be on my own for a while. I'm focusing on myself, my career, you know."
"Yes, yes. Becca tells me that you're up for a leading role in the new Dominic Glass movie. I think you'll be perfect." He gave her a little smile.
"We'll see." A pause. "And how are things with Sylvie?"
"We're taking things slow," he replied. "There's still a lot of ground we have to cover concerning our past, but," his face broke out into a wide grin, "my son is doing great. His name's Arthur, and he just turned three. He already talks up a storm. He's so smart."
Anna could see the pride shining in his eyes, and it made her happy. He deserved it. She had heard that he'd been nervous waiting for the paternity test results, but once he met the child, he'd become a new person. "He takes after his dad, I see. You seem very happy."
"About Arthur, yes. He's a great kid."
"And you and Sylvie?"
His smile disappeared. "Like I said, we're taking things slow. I don't think marriage is in the cards for us. She wants to go back home to Colorado. She's suffered through several nervous breakdowns, and she wants to go back to a treatment facility near her hometown. I support her decision to look after herself, but I don't want to lose Arthur, not when I finally met him. I'm trying to convince her to let him stay with me, but she hasn't agreed to it."
Anna inhaled deeply. The sadness in his eyes brought out feelings of sympathy. "I know things will work out for you. You're a brilliant man, and I know you will figure out the best thing to do. Arthur's lucky to have you."
He looked at her for a few seconds. "Thanks, Anna." He furrowed his brow as if something was troubling him all of a sudden. "Uh, please take care of yourself and be careful."
She smiled. "Of course."
"No, I mean really be careful. I don't think you should let your guard down." He took a breath. "The car accident might not have been an accident. Someone expected you to be in the car."
She gasped. "What? What are you saying? Do you mean that someone tried to hurt me? You never told me."
"I didn't want to worry you."
"Namjoon! You should've told me. I'm more worried now than before. If you know something, you better tell me," she exclaimed. "Is this what you were talking about in the hospital? Something you couldn't tell me?"
He blinked rapidly. "Wh-What did I say?"
"You first said something like she was there," Anna began, trying to remember the incident. "Then when I saw you in your hospital room you said that you couldn't tell the police something, but you never explained."
"I didn't know I'd said that." He stared down at his hands.
She leaned forward on his desk. "Tell me what that was all about. I really think you need to talk to me. Who was there, and why couldn't you tell the police about it?" She stared hard at him. "Tell me, Joon. Just tell me what you meant."
He nodded and leaned back on his chair. "Okay, but you have to promise me to keep it to yourself. At least for the time being, okay?"
"I can't promise you anything, not if someone's trying to hurt me."
"It was Norma. I think she's the one behind the incident." He paused a beat. "But I can't say for sure. Sylvie told me some things, but she's not very reliable. She's mentally compromised. I also don't want to say anything against Norma because it will implicate Sylvie as well, and I can't do that to her. Not now. Not after everything else I've done."
