Sixteen: Nomination

"Oh, my God!" Anna screamed at the TV. "You got it! You got the nomination!" She grabbed Seokjin's shoulder and shook him roughly. "You got it!"

Seokjin stared at the TV screen where the nominations for the --- Awards had just been announced. The silly grin seemed permanently plastered on his face.

Anna kept hollering. "You did it! You did it! I always knew you would!" She threw herself into his arms and hugged him tightly.

He stared at the TV screen over her head as the rest of the nominations were announced. A few minutes later, he realized that Norma had not been nominated although the studio had been campaigning hard for her. They thought that having Norma and Seokjin both nominated and the semi-scandal about their supposed affair would boost ticket sales for the movie.

"Dream Lovers was nominated for Best Picture," Anna said after a few minutes. "Congratulations." She studied his face and realized that he was probably thinking about Norma. "I can't believe she wasn't nominated. I mean, for all her faults, she's a good actress. She did a great job in that role."

"Yeah. She'll be devastated." Seokjin looked down. "But she's a star. She'll put on a brave face in public. In private, I wouldn't want to be near her right now."

"You wouldn't?" Anna's voice was soft. "Do you still have feelings for her?"

He shrugged. "I'll always have feelings for her."

Anna gulped at his answer. Of course he would. He had loved her enough to defy her husband and endanger his career. Norma King was not only a star but she was a beautiful, seductive woman. She made men fall in love with her on a daily basis. Anna sighed. Seokjin would forever compare any woman he dated to Norma King. She also compared herself to Norma and knew that he would never look at her or feel about her the way he looked and felt about Norma. Who was Anna Lane after all? Just his childhood friend. A teacher. A virgin. She had nothing to offer him except her friendship.

"So, will the studio set up some type of date for you for the show? Maybe one of the other actresses from the movie?" She fidgeted on the couch next to him.

He looked at her. "I suppose they'll suggest something like that. But I'd rather take you."

Her eyes went wide. "Me? Are you serious?"

He laughed at her reaction. "Yes, you, silly. I'll have more fun with you than if I went with a clown. I don't want to be sitting there all nervous."

She smiled. "I'll ignore that clown comment because I'd really love to go. Imagine! Me at a big awards show. I might even be on TV! Oh, my God! My parents will go crazy." She suddenly became serious. "Oh. But what will I wear?"

"What? How does that matter?"

She frowned at him. "Of course it matters. It's the most important thing at awards shows. You know I can't afford a fancy designer dress."

"I'll buy you something." He looked at her as if it was no big deal. Why was she so concerned?

She threw her head back on the sofa's headrest. "No. I'll figure something out." She smiled at him. "I guess that's not the important thing right now. The important thing is that you're now the Best Supporting Actor in a movie!"

"I haven't won yet," he said.

She hugged him again. "You will. I have a feeling about this." She moved back. "I always knew you would be successful, Jinnie. You have something about you that can't be denied. And it's not just because of your looks."

"What about my looks?" He kept his tone playful, but he wanted to know what she thought.

She rolled her eyes. "Oh, you know you're handsome. Stop trying to make me say it. You're very handsome, but you're also very talented. You're getting this award because of your hard work. You got all those magazine covers because of your looks."

"Magazine covers?"

"You know. You've been on the cover of at least three magazines this past month." She saw the look he was giving her, and she blushed.

"You've been keeping up with that?" His tone was teasing. "You look for me on magazine covers?"

"Stop it." She hit his arm and attempted to get up.

He pulled her down. "You stare at my picture in magazines when you could just look at me in person?" He moved his face within inches of hers. Suddenly, he was aware of her scent. His eyes strayed to her lips, and he fought the urge to kiss her.

"Now who's being a clown?" She pushed him away with a laugh and got up. "I'll have to start looking for a dress and shoes and all that. In the meantime, I need to call my mom. She'll want to know the scoop about you and your award." She walked to her room.

Once inside, she closed the door and leaned against it. She took a deep breath to slow down her heart rate. It was sometimes so difficult being around Jin. She often felt this pull, as if he were a magnet drawing her close. She'd promised to save herself for marriage, but the thought of Jin's body next to hers made her senses overheat. She wondered if he was even aware of the effect he was having on her.

In the living room, Seokjin was sitting with his eyes closed, hoping to get his body back under control. She's my best friend, he kept repeating to himself.
