Forty-Seven: Birth of an Obsession

Norma King stared from the back of the cab as Seokjin walked into the building. She had been following him for a few days, wanting to learn his movements so that she could find a good time to confront him. She missed him so much that she cried at night. She closed her eyes as she remembered how his touch would send her body up in flames. Even now she had an urge to touch herself, but she opened her eyes quickly, aware that there was a stranger in the front seat of the cab.

"Okay. Let's go," she announced to the driver. She needed to get herself back to her uncomfortably small apartment where she could imagine it was Seokjin touching her and pleasuring her instead of just some battery-operated wand.

"I think someone's following me," Seokjin announced to Jungkook as they sat in front of the TV.

The younger man's eyes grew wide. "What? Really? Do you mean like a fan?"

Seokjin shrugged. "Maybe. Do fans follow you in cabs?"

Jungkook scrunched his lips in thought. "Hm, they might. But a fan will usually run up to you wanting to touch you or asking you for an autograph. You're saying someone is just staring at you from a cab? How often has this happened?"

The older man shook his head. "Not sure. At least three times this past week. When I walk out of the agency or a store, there's always a cab parked across the street that leaves as soon as I look in its direction. A few blocks later, I'm pretty sure the same cab is following me. One time I even got its number." He paused. "Could be a coincidence."

"In life there are no coincidences," Jungkook proclaimed. "There are cabs everywhere, but if you're getting a weird feeling about this, there must be something to it." He sat forward on the couch, his arms on his knees. "Listen. Next time that happens, don't ignore it. Get another cab and go someplace unexpected, like an army recruiting office or something. If they follow you there, then someone is definitely stalking you."

"Okay, yeah."

"But whatever you do, don't lead them back here. That might be what they want."

Seokjin nodded gravely.

"Welcome to stardom!" Jungkook smiled brightly.

"Thanks for meeting me for lunch, Annie."

Anna smiled. "Of course. Nothing's been decided about the new film, so I won't be as busy these next few weeks. Once Namjoon has things locked down, I guess we'll be swamped for months. I'm glad we have this bit of time to hang out."

Seokjin nodded. "Me, too." He swallowed painfully. "So, uh, have you guys set a date?"

Anna blinked a few times as if she didn't understand the question. Then she inhaled and smiled again. "Oh, no. Not yet. We'll be too busy this next year if everything falls in place. Namjoon says this next role is going to be my breakout role. He thinks it'll catapult me into the A-list."

"Oh? Really?"

"Namjoon says this is only the beginning," she continued. "He says he's drowning in piles of scripts that have been sent in even before the awards show."

He stared into his glass, trying not to show his annoyance at how many times she was quoting Namjoon. He could feel his jealousy flaring up. "Huh," he grunted.

"I can see now why this business holds such allure for you, Jin. To be sought after, complimented—I never thought it was something I wanted." She reached over the table and grabbed his hand. "Who knows? You and I might get to act together one day. Isn't that exciting?"

He tried to match her smile, but for some reason, his heart wasn't in it. He twined his fingers with hers. Being a big star was no longer something exciting for him. He didn't want to be in a movie with Anna; he wanted to be at home with her watching TV, eating dinner, laughing—just like they used to do. He longed for the simplicity of when they were just Anna and Seokjin. Friends.

Even though he knew he loved her.

Norma's eyes were glued to the two figures she could see through the restaurant's window. She gnashed her teeth to see how solicitous he was of that little bitch. She noted how he smiled at her, how his body leaned toward her when she spoke. Was he holding her hand? She didn't blink from the moment the two of them exited the restaurant until the moment they walked away together around the corner.

She felt her breath become short. Seokjin was hers! That bitch had no right to him. She could get another man anywhere, but Norma's last chance was Seokjin. He had to come back to her. He had to love her again. And if she had to get that girl out of the way, so be it.

Seokjin is mine, Norma kept repeating in her mind. Only mine. Forever mine.
