UNREQUITED LOVE
I re-watched The Holiday the other day, and if you're a fan of this movie like I am, you know at the beginning, there is a monologue about love, and particularly Unrequited love (If you don't know what I'm talking about, go watch or re-watch this movie after reading my poem 😉).
Anyway, it reminded me I'd written these lyrics/poem inspired by this part, along with diverse things I've witnessed and/or experienced, a few years ago. So I thought, to start 2023, why not share it? Like a resolution to be more confident in my writing and share more of my heart with you, guys ✨
If you look around, you'll see it,
Probably too often...
That guy looking at her like the seventh wonder,
While she's giving all her love to her husband 'til the end.
This one girl, praying for this man who doesn't know her,
Or this one, holding on a little too long to a friend.
When 'I love you' doesn't mean the same thing on both sides,
Hopeless and restless,
Why believe in all those fairytales and love guides?
When there is no 'us'.
We're the disabled of love,
The victims of one-sided affairs,
The outcasts of fairytales.
When you fall in love alone,
Hit by a poisoned Cupid's arrow,
This is unrequited love.
They say 'love is blind', and this is no pun, more like a cuss,
Finding hope, things in common in little details,
Falling more, not seeing the signs showing the obvious.
Telling yourself you've got to let go, it just fails.
When 'I love you' doesn't mean the same thing on both sides,
Hopeless and restless,
Why believe in all those fairytales and love guides?
When there is no 'us'.
We're the disabled of love,
The victims of one-sided affairs,
The outcasts of fairytales.
When you fall in love alone,
Hit by a poisoned Cupid's arrow,
This is unrequited love.
We can only blame ourselves for these heartaches.
They don't feel it, ungrateful or unaware.
Meanwhile, there's someone else who's got what it takes,
Dying to be loved, in the shadows somewhere.
When 'I love you' doesn't mean the same thing on both sides,
Hopeless and restless,
Why believe in all those fairytales and love guides?
When there is no 'us'.
We're the disabled of love,
The victims of one-sided affairs,
The outcasts of fairytales.
When you fall in love alone,
Hit by a poisoned Cupid's arrow,
This is unrequited love.
As Kate Winslet says in the Holiday, 'this is the cruelest kind' of love, and we rarely read about it in romance. So I wrote this for all of us, the outcasts of fairytales, the victims of one-sided affairs, and everyone who has ever experienced Unrequited love 💕
I hope you liked it! If so, don't forget to vote ⭐ and comment!
And if you're currently heartbroken, don't forget that little line 'Meanwhile, there's someone else who's got what it takes, dying to be loved, in the shadows somewhere.' So keep shining and keep your eyes and heart open, my little Shooting stars ✨ We're not hopeless! 😉
