Chapter Twenty Six

Mia woke up in a cold sweat, silent screams racking her body as she thought of her nightmares. Luckily, these dreams hadn't caused any loud screams, only terrible visions she'd have to deal with the rest of the day and sobbing in her sleep.

She sat up quickly, looking around her. The air smelled of smoke and blood. She looked around, scared that she had hurt yet another innocent bystander. She let out a sigh of relief when she realized it came from a gash in her calf. She had landed on a fallen street light that had been torn up pretty bad.

Looking around, she saw that there were a lot of fallen streetlights and street signs. Not only that, but the pavement was torn up too. It was terrible. Obviously, it was worse than she had thought the night before.

Mia realized how worried her family must have been and ran over to her car when she realized that there were already people in the parking lot of the school. Mia's heart raced. She knew that she couldn't be seen walking towards her car but she needed to go home. Luckily, the mask covered almost all of her face, making her almost unidentifiable. But if Blake saw her, he'd know exactly who she was.

Mia thought for a moment, hiding at the unseen corner of the building. Suddenly, a loud gasp sounded from somewhere close by. Mia ran to the sound, only to see a girl looking at the damaged street. Mia ran over to the girl, who looked horrified. She re-adjusted her mask, making sure it covered up her face correctly. The girl stood by some bushes and Mia walked over to her quickly. "Are you okay?" was the first thing she asked.

The girl looked up before gasping again. "Who are you?" she asked, not answering Mia's question.

Mia knew her exact answer. "I'm Shock," she replied, a smug smile on her face at the name.

"What is this?" she asked.

Mia thought harder about the question. "I'm not sure what it's called. Did you hear of the fire monster on the Golden Gate Bridge a few weeks ago?" she asked. The girl nodded. "This was kind of like that except, instead of a bear made out of fire, it was an eagle made out of wind. That's what caused the damages. I stopped it," Mia stated proudly.

"Woah," a different voice rang out. Mia looked away from the girl to see that she'd gained an audience. Oh boy. They must have heard them talking and wondered what it was.

Out of the corner of her eye, she could see Blake looking at her. She knew that she would get quite the conversation done. Mia felt herself start to buckle under the attention.

"I have to go," she told them before using her invisibility to sneak away. She heard many gasps but ignored them, running over to somewhere she could hide until the kids had gone into the school and she could get to her car safely.

Mia had almost gotten to the weeping willow in the back when a hand reached out and grabbed her elbow.

Mia looked out and almost zapped the person who'd grabbed her but stopped when she saw who it was. How had he seen her? "How did you see me?" she asked, voicing her thoughts.

"A rustling of the grass here, a shift of the air there. But that's not the point. Your family is worried sick. They called me this morning freaking out about how you didn't get home. That freaked me out, Mia. I was so worried. And fighting an air eagle? You know that you aren't strong enough to fight a monster. What were you thinking? And on today of all days."

"What's today?" she wondered. She would have known if something important was going on today because she remembered literally everything.

"Your first appointment with Dr. Clarkson on the burns!" he exclaimed, shocking Mia. She'd never been informed of her first appointment.

"Nobody told me!" she returned, her voice rising slightly.

Blake sighed. "Can we just go one day without fighting?" he asked, running his hands through his hair in exasperation.

Mia let out a breath. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to fight the eagle but it was right there and my suit was right next to me and..." She didn't know what to say. "I guess I just wanted to make up for last time," she finally whispered.

"I'm sorry," he responded. "I shouldn't have snapped at you like that."

Mia knew that no matter how many times they argued or how many fights they had, they'd always find a way to fix it.

Mia woke up with a smile on her face. No nightmares, she thought, happy that the pills had done their job.

Mia sat up slowly and yawned, smiling slightly. Only one more month of school. One month and then she was free.

Not only that, but Mia had a date today. At first, she hadn't really liked Charlie but now, she knew that her love was real.

She stood up and ran over to the bathroom. She hopped in the shower and started washing her hair with her normal lavender shampoo. She let her mind wander and eventually found herself thinking of her fight with the eagle a month ago.

She hadn't fought against another monster since the encounter but she'd heard a lot of talk about Shock around the school and a small newspaper even did an article. There had been superheroes in the past but that was years ago. Before she'd even lived so this was news.

Mia finished her shower before hopping out. She grabbed some shorts and a cute yellow shirt and changed. She sat on her bed before putting on a pair of yellow vans and standing up. She walked out the door with a hop in her step.

Mia wasn't going anywhere super fun that morning. Only to her usual burn appointment. They had all healed at that point and now the doctors and scientists and stuff were doing tests on the scars and the skin there and stuff. But this was supposedly her last test, so that's fun.

Mia ran down the stairs, almost tripping on the last step. She hopped off of it, skipping over to the kitchen. She grabbed a bagel from the basket on top of the fridge and put it in the oven.

She sat down at the empty table, taking out her phone. She smiled when she saw that she had a text from Charlie. She immediately clicked on it.

Hey, babe. Whatcha up to?

Nothing much. Just eating breakfast. How about you?

Thinking about your beautiful face. Mia blushed, walking over to the oven to grab her bagel.

Well, other than that. Goof.

Finishing up plans for our date tonight.

I'm so excited! I can't wait.

I can't wait to see your smile. I miss you. You need to hang out with me more *insert pouty emoji*

Mia giggled after finishing the last bite of her bagel and was about to respond when she heard her dad call from upstairs. "You ready?" he asked.

"I've been ready for like ten minutes," she laughed. It was a slight exaggeration. But still.

Mia stood up from her seat before putting her plate in the empty seat and walking over to the head of the stairs. "Let's go!" she called before watching as he rushed down the stairs in khaki shorts, a Tommy Bahama shirt, and flip flops. She laughed at both his attire and how he was the one who was late. Adding it all together, it was hilarious.

Mia's dad sent her a small glare before he grabbed his keys from the hook and ran out the door to his car, Mia following behind him, although she walked.

"Thank you so much for coming. Let me tell you, we are all going to miss you and you have been a huge help," Dr. Clarkson's upbeat voice told Mia as she made her way out the door.

It had been another usual day. She'd gone in, gotten some shots, they took some blood and skin samples, and then she was done. It only took about two hours, which was the normal time span for these things.

"I'll miss you too but I have to admit, I am happy to be done with all the poking and prodding," Mia confessed with a chuckle.

"I suspect you are," she agreed with a small laugh and a big grin. "If you ever get any other life-threatening injuries, I hope you choose me as your doctor," she joked.

Mia laughed lightly. "Will do." They reached the door and jugged lightly before Mia walked out the door and ran over to her dad's waiting car. Normally, a doctor wouldn't just walk with their patient but Dr. Clarkson had said, "This could be the last time I ever see you! I have to walk you out!"

Mia stepped into her dad's car quickly, waving goodbye to Dr. Clarkson before turning her attention to her dad who was now pulling out of the parking lot.

"So," he started. "How was your time?" he asked.

"Good," Mia responded vaguely, looking out the tinted windows to the bright city. "Just the normal stuff," she told him before he had even asked the question.

Her dad sighed before turning his attention back to the road. Mia smiled at her dad before turning her attention to her phone.

Hey, I'm excited for tonight!

Same! Charlie responded immediately.

Will you ever tell me where we're going?

Nope. That was literally all he said and it annoyed the crap out of Mia. She'd been pestering him for like a week and he just wouldn't give up.

Pleeeeeeease, Mia begged.

Nope. he repeated.

You know, in terms of boyfriends, you really are the most annoying

You know you love me

You wish

I do. Mia didn't know how to respond to that. How was she supposed to respond? She knew that she did love him. She'd figured it out a few days ago but she still hadn't told him. How did somebody do that? It was too hard.

Mia decided to just avoid the topic altogether. At least until she saw him in person.

"Hey, do you want to go out to eat?" Mia's dad asked from the driver's seat.

Ugh, dad's trying to talk to me. I have to go.

"Yeah, totally," she responded quickly, her eyes still attached to her phone as she waited for a response.

Awww. I'll talk to you later.

I'll be waiting.

"Where do you want to go?" he asked.

"Ummm, Carl's Jr." she suggested, finally looking up from her phone to talk to her dad.

"Totally," he agreed, pulling into the parking lot.

Mia sighed, looking at the smudged, floor-length mirror in front of her. She was wearing a knee-length peach sundress with lace on the shoulder area. Her shoes were these cute brown leather sandals.

The outfit was fool-proof but she just didn't look good enough. "You look perfect," Tori assured her, a smile on her contoured face.

"I don't know. Is it good enough?" Mia sighed again. She couldn't do it. What if Charlie hated her outfit?

"It's perfect, Mia. Stop worrying. I'm sure that Charlie will love it," she comforted. "You have nothing to worry about."

"Okay, you're sure?"

"One hundred percent."

Despite Tori's efforts, Mia felt her heart race in nerves as soon as she heard the doorbell ring. She nervously tucked a strand of hair behind her ear as she heard her dad open the door and start talking to Charlie.

Mia looked over at Tori who gave her a reassuring smile and nudged her out of the room. Mia started walking down the stairs, hoping that Charlie would like it. All she wanted was for him to like it.

When she saw him, she sucked in a breath. He looked perfect. His normally messy dark brown hair was now combed and styled beautifully and he wore some blue jeans with a tucked-in button-up shirt that fit his body perfectly.

Mia felt a surge of love flow through her like a tsunami. She watched as his eyes filled with something indescribable. She always wanted to see him like that. His eyes glowing with longing and happiness.

"Hey," she breathed, once again brushing a strand of hair behind her ear.

"Hey," he copied, a smile on his perfect face. "You look amazing," he told her after a moment of silence.

Mia blushed. "Thanks. You look pretty amazing yourself," she returned.

"Are you ready?" he asked. She nodded swiftly and they walked out the door.

A/N Okay, so a few things 1) I'm so sorry about how late this is. I know that not many people actually read this but to those of you who do, I'm sorry. 2) I finally got out of my writer's block so I'll try to write as much as possible but I'm also on vacation sooo... We'll see. 3) Thank you all so much for 1.5k reads. It means so much to me. I think that's it
