Chapter Three

The minute Mia arrived at home she went to go talk to her dad who was in his office. Luckily, he had arrived home before them as his work was far closer than their school.

"Hey dad?" she asked, trying to catch his attention. He looked away from the computer screen and turned to face her.

"Yes?" he responded, still sitting in his computer chair.

"Could I hang out with a friend next saturday at noon?" Mia pleaded.

"What friend?"

"Umm..." she hadn't anticipated this. "Blake," she whispered.

"A boy?" her dad asked with a raised eyebrow.

"Well... yes," she admitted. "But I don't like him at all because he's mean and very annoying. The only reason I'm even hanging out with him is because he needs help with his homework," Mia lied.

"Okay, then. No funny business. Got it?"

"Got it," she responded, smiling at the thought that she had convinced him. She hated that it was Blake but she was also extremely happy that she would be able to hang out with somebody, even if it was only to talk about weird, creepy abilities.

Mia groaned as she got out of her bed before realizing that finally it was Saturday. That thought brought a smile to her face as she thought of what she could do.

"finally," she mumbled to herself happily. "I can just sit around and watch T.V. all day. I can write or eat way too many bowls of Lucky Charms. I can do whatever I want," she told herself, her grin growing by the second to the point where she was sure it was starting to look creepy.

She got up slowly, taking her sweet time. She got into the shower and let the warm water stream down her back washing away all of her worries from the past week. For those few calming minutes she forgot about everything. Her mom. Paige and Anna. Even her powers.

After finishing up her normal morning routine she ran downstairs and grabbed a pop tart before putting it in the toaster to heat it up. She sat down at the table and grabbed her phone. She saw that she had gotten a text from Blake.

Hey, we're hanging out today, right?

She frowned when she realized that she had indeed made plans with Blake. All of her happiness drained away when she realized that she had to go out of the house. Well, too late now. It would be rude to cancel at this point.

Yep. 12:00 at StarCoffee. See you there.

See you.

She looked at the clock to see that it was already 11:00.

She turned off her phone just as the pop tarts popped out of the toaster. She ate them quickly before going back upstairs to change into something other than sweats and a sweatshirt. After changing she quickly did her makeup and hair before grabbing her purse and running downstairs.

"Dad! Tori! I'm going out. I'll be back at 4:00 ish. Bye." She heard muffled goodbyes before she ran out the door and into the small, blue car. She turned on google maps and began driving to StarCoffee.

Thirty minutes later Mia had arrived at the small coffee shop. She looked around her and noticed that it was slightly different then the coffee shop back home. There were tables squished together to fit more people but even so there wasn't a single table available. She was now glad that she had left so early as on a day with normal traffic the drive would've only been about five minutes. Mia ordered a cookie crumble frappuccino, her favorite drink there, before sitting down on a bench outside of the coffee shop and waiting. A few minutes later her frappe was ready so she got up to go and get it before sitting back down and grabbing her normal book out of her leather purse.

She soon got lost in Shannon Messenger's world of Iggy and Mallowmelt. She smiled at something that Keefe said and remembered an inside joke with Alex, who she had forced to read the books. They had decided that the elves didn't have enough sweets so they came up with the Keeferdoodle. Man, she missed Alex. No matter how hard she tried to push him away from her family she knew that she would always miss him. This simply made her hate her mom even more.

Stop it! Stop thinking about these things! she told herself before going back into the happier thoughts that came with reading about Keefe and all of his perfectness.

Twenty minutes later Blake finally arrived.

"Sorry that I'm so late. The traffic was terrible," he apologized, sitting down next to her on the small bench. It was so small that they're knees were touching. That tingle ran up her spine again, making her shiver for no reason. She sighed and acted as though nothing had happened.

"It's alright. If it weren't for me having left thirty minutes early I would've been late too," she assured him.

He smirked for some reason. "Why did you leave thirty minutes early? Excited to see me?"

Mia sighed again, rolling her eyes and shaking her head but a small smile still appeared on her face at his words despite her efforts. "Not quite," she chuckled.

"That's what they all say," he joked.

"And who's they? Sarah?" she asked, remembering the name from a few days ago.

His eyes went wide. "How did you know that name?" he asked, shocked. She knew that she'd ruined all of the joking. For some reason that made her upset.

"The first day we met Bella mentioned it," she remembered faintly. How was she able to remember such a tiny detail?

"What? We met weeks ago. How are you able to remember anything that miniscule from that far back?" he asked eyebrows scrunched as though he were thinking.

"I don't know," she confessed, worry worming it's way into her mind.

Suddenly Blake gasped and it was like a lightbulb had gone off in his mind.

"It's your powers!" he whisper-yelled, looking at me with wide eyes and a small smile on his face.

"Oh my gosh! You're probably right! Quick! Ask me a time and date," she requested hurriedly.

"Umm? Ooh, December 25th... 2009... 7:05 A.M."

"I'd woken up hours earlier and was waiting for mom and dad to wake up. Me and Alex were sitting on the couch talking about our Christmas presents." Mia smiled at the memory.

"Who's Alex?" Blake asked.

"Shoot! I didn't say that. Forget I said anything, okay?" she said with a frown.

"Woah! Who's Alex?" he asked again, more insistent this time.

"I'm not going to tell you. Can we just talk about something else?" she begged.

"You're not getting out of this that easily. Who. is. Alex?" he asked, spacing out the words.

"He's my brother, okay!? Happy now? He's my brother who my mom decided was more worthy of her love than me! I hope you're happy because I'm not!" she told him, almost yelling at this point.

"I'm sorry. I had no idea. I thought he was going to be your boyfriend or something." He frowned as he looked into Mia's sad eyes. When Mia noticed this she looked away quickly, worried that if he looked for too long he would find out too much about her.

Blake grabbed her hand, forcing her to look back at her. That simple gesture sent a sea of emotions through her. She felt angry that he felt he had the right to touch her. She felt sadness that this moment would end. But mostly she felt happiness. At that thought Mia quickly pulled her hand away. She couldn't like holding his hand! Not possible!

Blake furrowed his brows in confusion but let it go.

Mia cleared her throat before talking again. "Anyway, we should probably talk about... that," she reminded him. "We need supplies and stuff. Won't I need an outfit or something?"

"Yeah, probably." There were a few seconds of silence before he spoke again. "I need to tell you something."

"What is it?" Mia asked, curiosity blooming in her mind as she looked into his deep green eyes.

"My dad... my dad is... my dad is Michael Payson," he whispered.

"Michael Payson!" Mia exclaimed, her eyes widening. Even she, with all of her antisocial tendencies, knew who Michael Payson was. He was one of the most famous actors in the world. Who wouldn't know him?

"Keep it down please. I don't want everyone knowing. You're only the third person I've told. Ever!"

"Okay, okay. I'll try to keep it down. I mean he's like, one of the most famous people in the world."

"Well, I know that."

"I have a question."

"Yeah?"

"Why did you tell me?"

"I told you for a few reasons. One is that as much as I hate to admit it I trust you." He cringed. "Another reason is that I have money. I mean my dad is rich which also makes me rich. I can help fund you. I can help you," he said with a small smile.

"Are you sure?"

"I've actually been thinking about it a lot since we first found out. I want to help you. If you're willing I'd like to tell my dad and see if he could help."

"How could he help?" she asked, confused.

"Well, before he was an actor he worked in a lab. He knows his stuff."

"Really?" Mia asked.

"Yeah, most people don't know that because after his acting career blew up he never really talked about it but he was indeed a scientist."

"Now it makes more sense why you're in such advanced classes," Mia said jokingly.

"I guess it does." He chuckled lightly as an adorable grin spread across his face. This was the Blake she liked being around. The one that was funny and kind. Not the one who was mean and egotistical.

"Why are you always so mean?"

"What? What's that supposed to mean?" Blake asked.

"Never mind. I'm sorry I asked. It just slipped out," she said, worry and regret flowing through her like a fire spreading through a forest.

"No. I want to know what you meant," he told her.

Mia sighed when she realized she wouldn't get out of this. "Sometimes you're kind of mean and others you're this nice guy that I might even want to be friends with but it seems like you always try to hide that part of you. Why?"

"I don't know. I never even realized I did that. I guess I'll try to stop."

"Thanks. I appreciate it," Mia said.

"Anyway, why don't you come over later and we can maybe talk to my dad. Today is like the only day he'll be free for like a month."

"Definitely. Woah! I just realized that I'm going to meet Michael Payson," she whispered, looking at Blake with wide eyes. She began studying his features searching for his father's features. She conjured a mental image of Michael Payson in her mind and compared it with Blake. Sure enough, she noticed similarities in their hair, noses, and lips. In fact they looked so much alike that she was surprised she hadn't noticed their similarities before. The only thing different about the two were the eyes. Michael Payson's eyes were dark brown while Blake's eyes were dark green, like the forest. The more she looked into his eyes the more mysteries they seemed to hold.

"Why are you looking at me like that?" he asked with a smirk.

"Huh?" Mia asked, reality seizing her once again.

"You were looking at me really weird. Why?"

"Right, that. I was just trying to see if you looked like your dad."

"Oh. Do I?" he asked, curiosity now flooding his eyes.

"You do. Well, except for your eyes," she told him.

"Yeah, that's what everyone says." He chuckled lightly.

"I'm going to text my dad and ask if I can go over to your house, okay?"

"Sounds good," he said.

"Be right back." Mia stood up and walked to a more private area underneath a tree.

She dialed up her dad's phone number and seconds later he picked up.

"Hello."

"Hey, dad," Mia said.

"Oh, hey, Mia. Why'd you call?"

"I just wanted to let you know that I'm going to Blake's house to meet his father who will be in the same room the whole time," she informed her strict father. She knew that this was the only way to convince him to let her go and she wasn't lying. She'd make sure he was in the room.

"As long as there's an adult. Be careful though. And I need to meet him soon."

"Thanks dad. I'll make sure to let him know about that meeting."

"Have a good time sweetie."

"Bye." Mia ended the call before heading back to the bench.

"What'd he say?"

"Just that I can go as long as an adult is in the room the whole time."

"I think I can make that happen. We should probably get going. How are you going to get there?"

"I was thinking that I could leave my car here and we could take yours to your house. What do you think?" Mia asked.

"Sounds good to me."

"Let's get going then," he responded with a snicker as they headed to the car.
