Chapter Four
When Mia and Blake arrived. Mia was shocked at how large it was. In fact, it was more like a mansion than simply a house. It was huge and had a large pool as well. She knew that Michael Payson would have a nice home but this was more than she ever could've imagined.
Mia and Blake got out of the car and walked up to the ginormous front porch before opening the door.
"Woah," Mia breathed, looking around the incredible room as her eyes noticeably widened.
Blake laughed lightly. "You like it?"
"Umm... duh. I mean, who couldn't like it?"
"The charm wears off. Trust me," he muttered, sighing.
"Anyway... when do I get to meet your dad?" Mia asked excitedly, her eyes glowing in anticipation. She looked around the mansion, hoping he would show himself.
"Dad! I'm home! I brought a friend. We need to talk to you!" he yelled.
"I'll be down in a minute," Michael Payson replied.
Blake and Mia walked into the large living room. No, not just large though. This room was ginormous!
"So, why haven't you told anybody about your dad? I mean wouldn't it be nice to be popular and stuff?"
"Well, I guess that would be nice but I also don't want people to just be my friend because they want to be my friend. You know?" he asked. Mia nodded her head in understanding. "I don't want people to only be my friend because my dad is freakishly famous and I'm kind of rich."
"I can see that. I guess I wouldn't want that if I was in your position either. It's still really cool that your dad is Michael Payson, though."
"I know."
"Oh wow. I'm going to meet Michael Payson! I'm really going to meet him."
"I know. You've already said that. Multiple times."
"Well, it's true! Woah. I'm going to meet Michael Payson!"
Blake chuckled again. They continued talking about anything and everything for a few more minutes before Michael Payson walked downstairs and Mia hopped out of her seat.
"Hey there, kiddo. I didn't realize that you were actually bringing over a friend," Michael Payson said jokingly as he raised an eyebrow at his son. Blake laughed.
"So, what's your name?"
"Mia!" she squeaked before leaning over to Blake. "He talked to me!" she whispered. "Michael Payson talked to me!"
Blake laughed again as if it was funny. It wasn't funny!
"What was that?" Michael Payson asked.
"She just said-"
"Nothing! I said nothing, Michael Payson!"
"I know. This is important and we kind of need some money and a place to work. It would also be nice if we could ask you about some stuff. I have no idea what I'm doing," he confessed.
"We can talk. Why don't we go somewhere more comfortable."
He led them to a large room with couches and a waterfall fountain to the side. There were windows circling all around the room looking out to the ocean.
"Woah," Mia breathed, looking around the room with wide eyes.
Blake and Michael Payson laughed.
"I can't believe I'm in Michael Payson's house," she said. "I think I'm going to faint," she whispered in Blake's ear.
"I sure hope not." She turned to see that the voice had come from Michael Payson. "You can just call me Mr. Payson by the way."
"Okay," Mia said. "Did you hear that?" she whispered to Blake yet again. "I can call him Mr. Payson! I'm on a name basis with Michael Payson! I-I mean Michael."
"You guys are so cute," he told them. "When did you two get together and why did I not know about it?" he asked.
"We're not together," Mia and Blake said simultaneously.
"Sure, you're not," he said in an unconvinced tone. "You will be someday," he said, although it seemed to be more to himself than to Mia or Blake.
"No, we won't. Trust me," Blake said and Mia rolled her eyes.
"You're right. Because you are nothing but a jerk," Mia said through gritted teeth.
"Really? Then why are you here? At my house?" Blake asked, raising his eyebrows as Mia rolled her eyes yet again.
"You know that I'm only here to talk to your dad about funding for whatever it is I'm going to need for whatever the heck is happening to me!" She was starting to get irritated as she turned her body so that she was facing him rather than his dad.
"Okay! I would love to listen to the rest of this very intriguing and entertaining argument but what is she talking about?" Mr. Payson asked, turning his attention to his son.
"There's this thing. It might be better if we sit down," Blake said as he led his dad to one of the couches.
"What's going on? I'm seriously getting confused." The group sat down as Blake and Mia looked at each other expectantly, trying to get the other to start.
Eventually, Mia gave in. "So, a few days ago. I was upset so I went to the bleachers where Blake found me," she started. "A few minutes later we heard an engine turn off and made our way to the place where the sound had come from. People in masks came and attempted to kidnap us." Mr. Payson gasped lightly and looked at them with concern in his eyes. "Before they could get us in the car something happened. We heard an extremely loud zap and the men were temporarily shocked. They ran away before anyone could catch them."
"Also, she turned invisible for a good thirty seconds," Blake added.
"Wow," he looked startled with wide eyes and a partially open mouth. "I think I can help." His shock seemed to be wearing off. "As you may know, there have been rumors of superhero-like people in the world. None of these rumors have been confirmed although I know something that very few do. These abilities are in fact real although nobody has been given any in a very long time. I will help you with your powers and funding as well as training you to use them properly."
"Thank you. How should we start?" Mia asked and Mr. Payson chuckled lightly.
"Well, I'll need to ask some questions. Why don't we start with that," he said.
"Okay," Mia and Blake said at the same time.
"When did you find out about your abilities?"
"Last Tuesday. The day after I started school and three days after moving," she informed him. "It was at 3:27 P.M."
"How do you know that?" Blake asked.
"I don't know," she confessed.
"But I do," Mr. Payson informed her. "You have another ability. You have the ability to recall anything and everything. I'm assuming that you've always been smart?"
"I have actually. It was always kind of weird. I'm actually only fifteen. My school kicked me up a grade and even this is too easy for me."
"How long have you had this memory?" Blake asked.
"I don't know. It has been at least seven years. I could've been born with it for all I know."
"You weren't born with it. I know that. Nobody is born with a memory like that," he told them.
"Well, we've got that out of the way. What else?"
"Do you have a name?" Mr. Payson asked. "That is, assuming you'd like to keep your identity a secret."
"I don't know. I'll have to think about it. I do know that I don't want anybody to know about my abilities. It just doesn't seem safe."
"You're right about that. You'll also need a suit and a mask, but we can figure out that stuff later. Right now, we need to begin your training."
"Right now?" Mia asked, eyes widening.
"If that's alright with you, then yes."
"Okay. Let me just call my dad to tell him that I'll be home a bit later than planned." Mia got out her phone and walked to the other side of the room.
"Hey Dad," she greeted. "I was wondering if I could stay over here for a bit longer? Blake's father invited me over for dinner."
"As long as you're safe and having fun I suppose it's alright. Be home by 9:30. Got it?" he asked.
"Got it. Thanks, dad," Mia replied before heading back to Blake and his dad.
"Are we good?" Blake asked. Mia nodded and sat back down.
"How are we going to start? Where are we going to train?" Mia asked
"We should probably go to our gym. You're going to need to start out by exercising," Mr. Payson said.
"Okay. Just going to warn you, I'm very out of shape," she told them.
"We'll have to change that."
When the group got to the gym Mia gasped. It was everything anyone could ask for. There was a rope course and treadmills. She saw a rock-climbing station and a boxing area. The gym led to a large pool in a room separated from the gym by glass. Beside the pool, there was also a large empty room that seemed as if it could be used for almost anything. It had strong titanium walls, ceiling, and floor. It looked indestructible.
Mia looked around the room before deciding to ask her question. "What am I going to do first?" she asked, looking between Blake and his dad, waiting for an answer.
"Well, I think it would be best to start off with some exercising. I want to let you know, though, that I will very rarely be able to help you as I do have an extremely tight schedule. I try to be here as often as possible but it's very likely that you'll have to rely on Blake," he told her. She nodded shortly and tried her best not to think too much into the fact that she and Blake would be spending a lot more time alone together.
"What? No way! I don't want to deal with her alone!" Blake exclaimed.
"This is why it's so hard to be friends with you! You're such a jerk sometimes," Mia said, clenching her fists and trying to calm down from her out-of-control emotions.
"I don't really care right now. I just don't want to have to deal with you." Mia's anger was starting to fade away leaving her alone with her sadness. No! Stay mad! You can't let yourself cry! Not in front of Mr. Payson! Not in front of Blake, she told herself, re-igniting her anger. This method had always worked for her and it wasn't going to stop now. Why was this hurting her so much? She hated Blake.
"I'm sorry, Blake, but you don't have a choice in the matter," Mr. Payson told him, frowning slightly as he looked at Mia. From what she deciphered it looked like he was concerned and pitiful. She didn't want him to pity her. "Now, I'm going to go and talk about while Blake takes you to the guest room to change into more convenient clothes."
"Looks like you're stuck with me," Mia said playfully, trying to wave off her unhappy thoughts.
"Looks like it," Blake said as he rolled his eyes before glaring at her.
After Mr. Payson left the room Mia started talking again. "I don't understand you at all! One second you're all 'I am so sorry I was a jerk! I'll never do it again,'" she said in a deep voice, imitating him poorly. "And the next you're all 'I hate you! I can't stand being around you!' I mean, make up your mind!" she said, her voice rising. "I understand that I'm a disappointment. Do you need to point it out to me?" Mia whispered.
When Blake looked at her with curiosity and worry weaved through his dark eyes she wondered what made her say that.
"You're not a disappointment. I just didn't want to be alone with you because I'm worried that it will make you hate me," he confessed quietly, looking down at the floor.
"Why would I hate you?"
"Well, I'm not the best person. I thought that I'd help you out and then you'd leave," he told her.
"I'm not going to leave. Okay? You need to have more faith in me. I understand what it's like to be left and I promised myself that I would never leave anyone."
"Can I ask you something?" his voice sounded serious now. Different than before.
"Yeah?"
"What happened with your mom?" Mia froze. She hadn't been expecting that. "You don't have to tell me. It's obviously not my business and this is the last time that I'm going to ask but... it's just... nevermind. You don't have to tell me."
As Mia looked into Blake's deep green eyes that seemed to hold all sorts of mysteries she realized that she trusted him. She didn't know when she got to that point or even how but it was true she trusted him. He was probably one of her best friends.
"I'm going to tell you. Just... promise me that you won't run, okay?"
"Of course. Why would I run."
He'll see why, she thought. He'll see.
