Chapter Eighteen

Mia's exhaustion was almost surreal but she'd done it! Mia had been invisible for a full minute!

Now, that might now seem like much but boy was it exhausting. Mia plopped down on her bed, her crutches thrown on the wooden floorboards.

Almost immediately, Mia's eyes started to close as she let herself fall asleep. Nope. It seemed as if the world was against her as she heard the familiar ringtone.

Mia picked up the phone and answered it, groaning when she realized she wouldn't be able to sleep yet. "What's wrong?" Mia immediately remembered the husky voice from earlier that day.

"I'm just exhausted," she admitted. "Sooo... why are you calling me?" she asked, very, very surprised and confused.

"Come on, Mia. I thought we were friends," he joked. It was weird how easily they had become friends but hey, she wasn't complaining.

"I mean, I met you today and if you haven't noticed, I'm not very social so this is very weird to me," she admitted.

Charlie laughed. "I get that," he told her. "Anyway, why are you so exhausted?" he asked.

Normally, Mia would come up with some lame excuse but he already knew everything so what was the point of lying. "I've been training my invisibility for the past two hours. It's very exhausting," she confessed. As if to prove a point, a yawn racked through her body.

"I can tell," Charlie joked. "So, I'm assuming you haven't finished the Trig homework."

"Nope. It won't take me long though." It was silent for a second and even though she couldn't see him, she could tell he was confused. "Bionic memory," she reminded him, tapping her temple for unseen effect.

"Ahh," he mumbled in understanding before he seemed to realize what she'd said. "Hey! That's cheating. You don't even have to work on it."

"Yeah. Instead, I have to train for hours on end until I think I'm ready and then try to save a bunch of people and instead get horribly injured, hurt people, and deal with the guilt," she told him.

"Fine, I guess your life sucks," he gave in, whining jokingly.

"Dang right it sucks!" she joked lightly.

"So, other than training, what do you do in your free time?" he asked.

"Not much other than reading, writing, and drawing," she admitted. "I've hung out with Bella a few times but other than that, I'm kind of a loner." Mia bit the inside of her cheek, instantly worried that she had scared him off.

"Same," he agreed, completely catching Mia off guard. "I mean, I have some friends but they're all more like acquaintances, and we don't hang out outside of school."

"We should be loners together," Mia joked. Why was she so cool around him? It took her weeks to let Blake in and yet, here is this guy that she's known for three hours and they are already talking like they've been friends for years.

Charlie chuckled a little bit. It wasn't as angelic as Blake's voice but it was definitely cute. "Definitely," he agreed.

Mia was still talking to Charlie when her dad's voice called her from downstairs. "Mia!" he yelled. "Time for dinner!"

Mia pulled the phone away from her face, covering the mic so Charlie wouldn't hear her. "Okay!" she responded in another loud yell. "I'll be down in a minute!"

Mia put the phone back to her ear. "I have to go," she told Charlie sadly. "I'll see you at school," she told him.

"Bye, Mia." The line went dead and Mia sighed.

Pushing herself slowly off the bed, she grabbed her crutches and started walking towards the door. She was kind of curious as to why she was having dinner so early but shrugged it off.

However, when Mia looked at the clock on her bedside table, she was surprised to see that it was already 6:43 which meant that she'd been on the phone for over an hour.

It was hard to walk downstairs in crutches but she was able to do it. She just wished the burns would vanish. You deserve this! Mia told herself, scolding herself for feeling sympathetic towards herself.

Mia arrived at the bottom of the steps and noticed that something was different. She subconsciously scanned the room for any changes. The small living room was clean and the tv sat on it's small table in the corner of the room, dusty as always. The blue furniture made the room cramped but Mia spent most of her time in her bedroom anyway, so she didn't care much. She still failed to notice anything different other than the cleanliness and the smell as she walked into the kitchen.

The tiled floor was cold on her bare feet. She saw her dad getting sparkling cider out of the fridge and her curiosity grew tenfold. They only had sparkling cider on special occasions and, as far as Mia knew, it wasn't a special occasion. Mia walked into the dining room where Tori, her dad, Blake, Mr. Payson, and surprisingly, Bella and Drew, sat with big smiles on their faces. Needless to say, the table was very cramped.

The table was decorated with her favorite flowers, light pink roses, and matching fairy lights. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw gift bags but was unable to see what they said. On the table, she saw gyros, her absolute favorite.

Although she was really happy, she was also still confused. A lot.

"What is going on?" Mia asked, seriously lost.

"Did you seriously forget?" Tori asked, her perfectly shaped eyebrows raised.

"Forget what exactly?" Mia asked, hoping they weren't talking about what she thought that they were talking about.

"It's April 15th, Mia. You forgot your own birthday!?" Tori wondered incredulously.

She knew this but she had hoped that they would forget. Her birthday reminded her of her mom so she didn't normally do anything. Mia feigned realization. "Oh," she whispered, embarrassment flooding her cheeks in the form of a blush. "Hey, wait! I'm seventeen now!" she said excitedly.

Blake laughed and Mia was reminded of Charlie. He had been so nice on the phone. Would he want to stay friends with her? Was he just using her? But if so, what could he possibly be using her for?

She shook her head and herself out of it and focused back on an awesome night she could feel was ahead of her.

Mia left her crutches leaning against the wall and took the empty seat next to Blake. No doubt, Bella had been the one to arrange the seating.

Blake looked at her with an expression of shock and amusement. "Did you really forget your own birthday?" he asked.

"It appears so," she responded, laughing to herself as she looked around the table. "How did you get everyone here?" she asked, directing the question at her dad.

"Don't look at me! This was all Tori, Blake, Drew, and Bella."'

She looked over at her friends, a smile on her face. "Thank you all so much," was all she could think to say.

"It's no problem," Tori assured her. "I knew that you would forget so I made sure that you got to do something fun.

"I seriously can't believe you forgot, though," Drew joked. "You must have a terrible memory," he joked. If only he knew.

Blake laughed and Mia knew he was thinking about her memory and how it was basically perfect. Unsuspectingly, the rest of the table started laughing as well, most likely thinking that he was laughing at her 'terrible memory'.

Mia blushed in embarrassment, her cheeks betraying her. Clearing her throat, she tried to change the subject. "So... this dinner looks awesome!"

"Thanks!" Tori and Bella squealed at the same time.

And with that, Mia prepared herself for a fun night.

Mia stared at Blake in complete and utter shock. And then the fury came.

"I can't believe that you don't like Zuko!" Mia told him. They were talking about Avatar: The Last Airbender. How they got to that topic, no one knew.

"He's just an emo teen! What's there to like!?" he asked exasperatedly.

"He is so much more than that!" she exclaimed, her cheeks red from anger.

"You're cute when you're angry," he told her, completely catching Mia off guard.

"What?" she asked. Blake blushed, seeming embarrassed.

"I didn't say anything," he told her, his voice three octaves higher than normal.

Mia felt her heart race. "It's okay," she comforted him, her voice a mere whisper. "I think you're pretty cute too," she admitted.

And then, they just sat there in silence. Boy was that awkward.

A/N I know it's short. I'm sorry. And I know that the last part is very strange. I wrote this late last night and I had just watched a lot of Avatar. Give me a break! Anyway, I hope you like it and if so please don't forget to Vote, Comment, Share, and Follow.

Also, who here has watched Avatar because Zuko is freaking awesome! Not as awesome as his uncle, but still pretty awesome!
