Requiem for a Dog
*Human AU. Cas and Dean are living together and own a dog. Sadly, the time has come and they have to put down their dog (pictured above).
"Common Dobby." Dean encouraged the German Shepherd mix forward. Dobby followed Dean, panting slightly with a wagging tail. Dean rubbed him behind the ears, making sure to avoid the cyst that was on his neck. Dobby climbed into the car that was conveniently parked, so that the porch was an easy distance from the open back door of the mini-van.
"Good job." Cas cooed scratching Dobby's head and giving him a good petting. Dean patted his hindquarters, before closing the door and heading into the the driver's seat.
The drive seemed to short to the two humans because they were already at the vet's. Encouraging Dobby out of the car and toward the vet's- Dobby did have a strong dislike of the vets- the two men entered the building. The receptionist told them to head to the room in the corner, #4, and followed them in.
"Do you want the ashes?" she asked them, making them nod.
"We would." Cas told her, "Could you also bring the vet in? We just want to make sure we're doing the right thing."
The receptionist nodded and left. While waiting for the vet, they petted Dobby, while praising him for being so good. The door opened, revealing an average height man with shoulder length brown hair. Dean's first thought was that he hoped Sam's hair wasn't becoming a trend.
"I'm Dr. Lipan." he held out his hand towards Cas- who was the closest- and they shook, before Lipan turned to Dean and also shook his hand. "I have a few questions to ask before I get to a physical."
"Has he been eating."
"Yes." Lipan continued with a in the same way- just little ones about Dobby's health and habits.
"My last question is purely opinion." Lipan told them. "Is Dobby happy?"
"Yes." Dean said. "He greets us when we come in."
"He's also rather happy to be with Dean when he grills." Cas added with a soft smile, absentmindedly petting Dobby's head. Lipan smile at them, before kneeling down to Dobby's level and offering a hand to him. Dobby sniffed it, put tried to move away from Lipan as he did the physical. Cas and Dean ended up scratching Dobby's head as Lipan felt some of the growths on Dobby, his abdomen, and back.
"He has an ear infection in his left ear, and he has back pain." Lipan told them. "The growths on his body inconvenient his walking because he has to walk around them, since they're in his joint areas."
"How long do you think is left?" Cas asked, grabbing onto Dean's hand.
"I can't say for sure. It could be a could be of days or a couple of weeks, however it's less than six months." Lipan explained. "During this time, it would be a staircase down for Dobby. While he would have some good days, there would be bad, and the bad would end up out weighing the good. It's definitely time if a dog ends up defecating on themselves. However, if you don't want to euthanize Dobby today, I could give you pain medication."
"Could we have a few moments?" Dean asked Lipan. Lipan nodded and left them to themselves.
"He's been a really good dog, and I don't want to see him in pain." Cas told Dean, while staring at Dobby. "It wouldn't be kind."
"So today?" Dean asked softly, making Cas nod. Dean got up and left the room to alert Lipan that they'd go with the euthanize option. When Dean came back in, Cas was sitting with Dobby on the red blanket that was laid out, cuddling with him. Dean joined Cas on Dobby's other side.
"Hi." the lady said. "Do you want to have a private or community cremation?"
"What's the difference?" Cas asked.
"In a community cremation, your dog will be cremated with other dogs, however you won't be able to get the ashes back. A private cremation is just your dog, letting you get your ashes back." she explained.
"Private please." Dean said, handing her his credit card.
"I'll be back with two things for you to sign."
She reentered the room, handing Dean the receipts and a pen. "If you sign that, then we'll precede."
"What exactly happens?"
"First we him a strong sedative to calm him down, then we go ahead and euthanize." with a nod from Dean she left.
A minute or two later, a different woman came in. She was carrying with her a shot. "I'm going to inject in his hindquarters. If his head swings back towards me, it's normal because this causes a pinch. It'll take 5 to 10 minutes for it to take affect."
Dobby almost bit her, but Dean had his hands up and ended up receiving it instead. The woman got up and left, while Dean and Cas comforted Dobby as he freaked out. At first, Dobby panicked because he couldn't get up, but he ended laying down, while Dean and Cas curled up around him, petting him and whispering praises to him.
When Dobby's eyes were almost closed, Lipan came back, accompanied by the woman who injected the sedative. He had a hair shaver, a bottle with a colorful cozy, and a shot with a tube. "You guys can stay up by his head, while we have to move him slightly on his side. If his breathing increases, it's normal. He may take one last big breath, but I don't think that'll happen. You two can take as long as you need."
Dean and Cas cuddled more with Dobby, gently petting him. Lipan shaved off a patch of Dobby's fur, before injecting the euthanasia solution. Dobby's breathing seemed normal, before it stopped. Cas burst into tears, not giving up petting Dobby. Dean grabbed onto Cas; his own tears falling his face. The stayed like that, hugging each other and gently stroking Dobby, for a long while.
After their tears calmed down, they got up, and Cas wrapped Dobby's collar around his wrist. Walking out of the veterinary clinic, they both felt a little emptier. Dean glanced back once, feeling as though he was abandoning Dobby at the vet's, but he knew he wasn't.
Cas's hand on his was the only thing that helped Dean have the ability to drive them home, where they curled up together, refusing to face reality for a while longer.
