Red

“Do ya think there’s really Titans outside of these Walls?”

“No way!”

“Of course there are! Why do you think we’re here in the first place??”

I watched nearby and chuckled to myself at the childish bickering. The three of them were young, young enough to still believe in the Tooth Fairy and Santa Claus, and yet they questioned the existence of Titans.

“Of course Titans are real.” I spoke up, walking to the group. “But you know why they haven’t gotten to us yet?”

“Because of the Walls, right?” The girl replied after raising her hand and waving frantically.

“That is true, but also with the help of the Survey Corps!” I said. “They go out there and fight them, for us and the rest of humanity!”

“Wow!” One of the two boys exclaimed. “Really??” They had curiosity in their eyes and they inched closer.

“They fly around with their gear, and ride miles upon miles on horseback! Getting further out into the world and coming back with information about what’s out there!” I explained, running around the group with my arms extended as if I were flying like a bird. Their eyes sparkled, and they ran around as well, laughing and pretending to fly.

“Are you gonna join the Survey Corps?” One of the kids asked. Now we were sitting in a circle, catching our breaths after our little run.

“Of course I am! I’ll be the strongest soldier anyone has ever seen!”I declared, puffing my chest out. I’ll be a hero that everyone will look up to! The person everyone turns to when in need of help! The soldier that bravely rescues others!

“Good luck with that.” A new voice said behind me, breaking my daydream. I turned around to look at another group of kids, not much older than the ones I’m talking to. “People say Oak’s grandson has already started training! And with help from his grandpa.” They informed me.

“Oak? As in the old retired Survey Corps Commander?” I asked. He was famous for his incredible amount of Titan kills and having the fewest casualties out of all the Commanders.

“Yeah, that’s the guy! He’s going to be joining the Trainees Corps next year.” Another said.

“Next year? That’s when I’m joining!” I said, both excited to see this kid and worried that he’ll take my spot as the top of the class.

“Then good luck with that, maybe you’ll be the second greatest in the class.” One of them snickered, before they all walked off.

I watched as they walked off, thinking about the new information I’ve gotten. Now I was determined. These kids think Oak’s grandson is gonna take my spot as the best, I’ll show them! I’ll become the greatest soldier within these Walls, or my name isn’t Red!
