The Rescue
By the time the next morning rolled around, Sabine woke up fairly early, glancing over at Shin, who was still lightly sleeping. She didn't move to wake her right away, focusing on getting herself up, and grabbing what she would need for the day so she could start getting ready, purposely being quiet so she wouldn't disturb her... besides she needed to rest. She was injured, it was only being polite.
Shin took a moment to realize she was awake once she had finally cracked her eyes open that morning. She already felt the sore, slightly stinging pain in her chest from the wound across her side before she even moved, so that made it hard when she felt she had to stretch out her body upon rolling over. Her eyes drifted to the empty bed across from her, which made her assume Sabine had already gotten up for the day.
With a sigh, Shin swung her legs over the side of her bunk, wincing and groaning in pain ever so slightly as she sat up fully. This was going to be a longer day than the first if they weren't found...
Sabine appeared in the doorway shortly after she awoke, leaning against the frame with her arms crossed, but she didn't look annoyed—quite on the contrary. "Well it looks like you didn't bleed out overnight, which means I must've done an okay job—if you need help getting up though, you can just ask... it was definitely a painful wound."
Shin lifted her head to look at Sabine. "You did a very nice job... because I'm alive. I may need the help getting up, though... it feels more irritated than yesterday."
She nodded, wasting no time in crossing over, offering her a hand. "Yeah, probably because it's a bad wound... when we get back to the New Republic, the med center there can help. Don't worry, you'll recover."
"I hope someone comes out here to find us soon, I'm kind of tired of spending all this time in a half crumbled ship... which is why I need to get that comm system up and running." She seemed more than determined to put her knowledge of tinkering to use once again, wanting to impress—not Sabine in particular.... Of course not. Just in general.
Sabine gently pulled her up, keeping her hand tightly in hers for... perhaps too long, but just to keep her stable. "I'll lay out all the parts I was able to gather, there should be enough for you to patch it... do you want a hand getting back up there?"
For almost a moment, Shin didn't want to let go of Sabine's hand... so she let it linger within the other's for a moment too long even after she was stable. "I think that may be for the best, just so I don't hurt myself further."
Sabine didn't seem to mind... so she didn't let go—at least not exactly. She instead took her arm, linking them together... for support. "It's alright, I've got you—I mean, I can support you. Just follow along with me."
Shin nodded, leaning into Sabine somewhat as she took her time getting to the front of the ship with the Mandalorian. She wanted to be able to get this fixed and get out of here... not that she wanted to get away from the company, she just wanted to be in a more comfortable environment.
Once they reached the cockpit, Sabine slowly let go of her arm, gesturing towards the pilots chair. "I'll bring the supplies I found over, maybe together we can figure out a way to fix it—unless you wanted to do it yourself... that's fine too, I can watch."
"I would like the help if you have an understanding of what you're doing. I wouldn't say I have a perfect technological knowledge, but I have the basic idea to know what I'm doing."
"Please, tech is just as much my thing as it is yours." She gave an amused laugh, sitting in the chair beside her. "Just pick up where you left off, I can help as you go."
Shin nodded once again, a soft smile on her lips before her expression took on one of pure focus as she began to look at the inner workings of the comm system once again and ask Sabine for any of the parts she may have needed.
By the time she was done, Sabine glanced over her work—it was impressive, she wouldn't lie. "That... doesn't look half bad. Let me try—let me try and get a message through." She leaned over and started punching in the code for the Republic, before glancing back at her. "... Thank you. For doing this."
Shin sat back to allow Sabine to test the comms, observing as she began to boot up whatever of the system would work. "There's no reason to thank me, Sabine... really. It's not as if I want to be stuck out here too."
"Well even still... that was good teamwork on your part. Even if that's not normally your style... you're good at it." She smiled lightly, before the comms crackled, and she held down the button to speak. "Hello? Hello—do you copy? This is Commander Wren—hello?"
At first it seemed as if there was just garbled static coming through the comms, before a voice started to come through and get clearer and clearer. "Sabine? Sabine, do you copy?" The voice of General Hera Syndulla came through after mere seconds, meaning it was working. Shin had successfully fixed the comms.
A sigh of relief escaped her as soon as she heard Hera. Knowing Hera was on the other end... it meant they'd get out of there. "It's good to here your voice, General." She said in a joking manner, giving Shin a look of gratitude, before her voice turned a bit more serious again. "The engines got damaged, we crashed—I don't know where. It's taken awhile to get the comms running, but we *need* a pickup...preferably soon?"
Hera felt so much relief of her own flood through her once she knew Sabine was ok. "We're just glad you're *ok*, Sabine... we can track this transmissions signal to your location, and I'll be there as soon as I can.
"I'm fine, don't worry... we might need a medic team on standby though. Uhm... Shin. You know. She's hurt, I've done the best I can, but it'd be better if a professional took a look at it too." She said finally. "We'll be here when you arrive... thank you, Hera. You're the best."
Hera hesitated before replying. "We will have one of the best medics ready for her before we get Shin to her cell to rest before questioning. I appreciate you for going on this mission for the New Republic, Sabine... and I appreciate you both for working together."
Shin very clearly looked a little disappointed by hearing the words "her cell" come from Hera—but what did she expect...? It's not like her putting aside her differences and helping Sabine would make her a hero overnight... but part of it still hurt—she didn't even have her lightsaber on her, it was confiscated!
Sabine looked over at Shin, not immediately replying to Hera. It wasn't as if she was wrong in assuming, but she just... felt as though they were beyond this. Somehow. "Actually, Hera... if it's alright with you, I think I can handle her from here. I owe her one for fixing the comms in the first place... a cell won't be necessary." She hoped that hera wouldn't see through her blatant attempt at wanting to spend more time *with* Shin, rather than against her.
Hera knew Sabine meant this with the best of heart, just as Sabine always had with people she was beginning to get a better understanding of... and maybe, if Shin was willing to fix the comms to get them out of there in the first place, Sabine was onto something. "I'm sure we can work something out to where Shin can remain free of a cell if she's to stay with you."
"Thank you, Hera... we'll be waiting for you, fly safe and we'll see you soon." Sabine confirmed with her, before she let the transmission go, slowly taking a seat beside Shin. "So... We're getting out of here. Finally, right? I'm sure you're just... so tired of me by now." She tried to lightly joke to clear any tension.
Shin seemed a lot more relaxed than she had moments ago... even if she didn't understand why Sabine had just done that. "Finally... you know, you didn't have to do that... you didn't have to get me out of a cell when I'm the one who's hurt you and your friends before..."
She knew she'd have to defend her choices eventually... but it didn't mean that she wanted to, not in that moment. "Maybe I just did so because *you're* hurt—you'll heal so much better elsewhere and besides... you haven't tried to kill me in over 24 hours, I thought we were doing pretty well."
"I see no need to kill someone who seems to value my life in the same ways I do, if that makes sense to you." Shin admitted. "I'm quite excited to get to your base and get properly healed... this thing hurts."
The faintest of smiles crossed her face. She was pleased with how far they'd come, in such little time together. "Hera's fast, she'll be here sooner than you'll imagine." She assured her... and she was right. It wasn't much longer until they had their ride out of there, and Shin was receiving *proper* care back on the base. While Sabine knew that she'd have to properly explain the whole thing to Hera later... she wanted to check on Shin first, and take her back to where she could rest...
