Sisters
<Shimmer's POV>
I yawned, groggily blinking the sleep from my eyes. Ruby had insisted on waking up as earily as possible in order to prepare for the meeting with the teen from earilier. Just my luck that the crazy pyro was a morning person.
I reached for a brush provided by the Pokemon Center and attempted to get my unruly hair under control.
"Hurry up, Shimmer!" Ruby exclaimed, bursting into the room from the bathroom, "We're meeting the boys in ten minutes, and I'm not going to be late because you're trying to be a beauty queen!"
I glanced over at Ruby. Her red hair was a mess, and she wore the same, singed outfit from yesterday.
I sighed and continued to brush out my knotted hair. "Unlike you, I put value into my appearance."
"Would you rather get back home or play beauty parlor?" she demanded.
"I refuse to appear in public looking like a mess," I replied, "I already have to wear the same clothes that I wore yesterday, and I smell like smoke and sulfur. So running a brush through my hair in the least I can do to not look like I ran through flames."
"You kinda did," Ruby countered.
"I still look better than you," I retorted, "Have you even looked in a mirror lately?"
"I've got more important things to worry about!" she exclaimed.
"Worry about those later!" I shouted, "Right now you look like you fought with wild cats and dove into a bonfire! Do not have the least bit of concern of how those around you will feel about being out in public with you?"
"What's that got to do with anything?" Ruby demanded.
I placed my brush on the nearby table, having brushed out my hair to the best of my ability, and turned to glare at Ruby. "I mean, I feel embarrassed to go anywhere with you, and I refuse to leave this room without you having the decency to drag a brush through that rat's nest you call your hair!"
"Oh, come on," Ruby growled, "Why should you care about my appearance? The last time I checked, you hated me. So if anything, you should be happy about it."
"You really don't know anything about how first impressions work, do you?" I sighed.
"So what?" Ruby stated, "I don't care what other people think of me."
"Really?" I inquired, "What about your boyfriends?"
"WHAT?!" Ruby shouted, appearing flustered.
"You know, those two boys that follow you around everywhere," I stated, "Flash and Flicker. At least one of them has to have a crush on you, if not both. And I'm willing to bet you like them, too."
"They're not boy friends!" Ruby screamed, "Sure, they're boys and they're friends, but they're not boyfriends!"
I snorted. "Sure," I replied sarcastically.
"It's true!" Ruby insisted.
I motioned to the bed. "Sit," I ordered.
"Excuse me?" Ruby demanded, annoyance sparking in her eyes.
"If you refuse to comb your hair, I will do it for you," I replied evenly.
"No way!" Ruby exclaimed, "My hair is fine!"
"It looks like you were dragged backwards through a car wash!" I retorted, "I refuse to leave this room until it looks half- way decent!"
I glared at Ruby, refusing to compromise. She returned my glare for a moment, before sighing. "Fine. But make it quick. We meet the boys in five minutes now."
After several minutes of combing through Ruby's hair and a multitude of insults exchanged, we finally walked down the steps to the lobby with the room key in hand.
The boys were already waiting in the lobby. Flicker had taken up three chairs to form a make- shift bed, and was snoring loudly. Flash was sitting in one of the few chairs not taken up by Flicker, and appeared to be scanning through a news paper.
I sat beside Flash while Ruby went up to the desk and handed the room key to the pink- haired lady- Nurse Joy, I think. I glanced at the newspaper Flash was reading. Four large bold words caught my eye. "Billionaire's Only Daughter Missing," read on of the article titles. However before I could read anymore, Ruby came over, and Flash folded up the newspaper and put it away.
"Good morning Flash," Ruby greeted the boy.
"Morning," Flash replied.
Ruby glanced over a Flicker, who was still snoring on all the chairs. "Flicker, get up," she stated.
"Maybe later," Flicker mumbled sleepily, rolling over.
"Flicker, get up, now," Ruby demanded.
Flicker didn't reply.
Ruby sighed, "Don't say I didn't warn you."
She walked over and in one swift motion pulled the chair Flicker was resting his head on out from under him.
Flicker yelped as he lost his balance and slid out of the chairs. He quickly got to his feet and turned to face Ruby, rage burning in his eyes.
"What was that for?" he demanded angrily.
"I had to wake you up somehow," Ruby replied, "That was the best way."
"It was not!" Flicker exclaimed.
"Was too," Ruby stated.
"Was not!" Flicker yelled.
"Was too."
"Was not!"
"Was too."
"Was not!"
"Was too."
"Was not!"
"Was too."
"Was not!"
"Enough!" I shouted, "Quit arguing! It's too early in the morning for me to put up with it!"
Flicker glared at me, annoyance sparking in his eyes. "Someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed."
"I wouldn't have woken up this early if we didn't need to meet that Leo guy. He'd better be able to get us home!" I snarled.
"Well, while your waiting, I'll go back to sleep," Flicker replied, dragging the chair Ruby stole back in line and laying back down on the makeshift bed.
"You are the laziest person I have ever met," Ruby stated, glaring at Flicker.
"You're just mad 'cause I thought of it first," he mumbled, yawning.
"Believe what you must," Ruby replied, rolling her eyes and taking the one empty seat left in the room.
We sat there in silence for several minutes. Flash picked up the newspaper he had been reading and continued to glance through it. I found an interesting looking magazine featuring Pokemon clothing designs and leaved through the pages. Soon, my reading was occasionally interrupted by loud snores coming from Flicker, who had obviously fallen asleep. Ruby sat watching the door, appearing to be lost in thought.
After several long minutes of this grueling silence, the door to the Pokemon Center slid open and the teenage boy from the night before walked through.
"Sorry I'm late," he stated, "Celestia wanted cake for breakfast, and it took a lot of convincing to get her to accept a waffle."
"Had it taken much longer we all would have died of old age," I snorted.
Leo gave gave me a cold stare. "Have you ever tried to deny a five year old candy?" he inquired.
"Uh... no?" I stated, somewhat unsure. Had I ever done something like that?
"Then don't judge," Leo replied. "Now," he stated, addressing everyone, "Are you ready to go home?"
"Just after I wake up sleeping beauty over there," Ruby stated, motioning towards where Flicker laid, still snoring.
Flash folded up his newspaper once again and placed it on the table beside him. I laid my magazine on the stand while watching Ruby and Flicker carefully. Ruby once again yanked the chair from underneath Flicker. Caught unawares, he tumbled to the ground.
"Time to go!" Ruby exclaimed.
"You could be a bit gentler in you methods of waking people up," Flicker complained, rubbing his head, "Some day you're going to give me a concussion."
"And you're giving me a migraine," Ruby counter.
I chose to step in there. "As much as you two must love to flirt," I stated, "I really want to get home. Then you can announce your marriage to the school."
"What makes you think we're flirting?" Ruby demanded angrily, "I could never live my life with that annoyance!"
"Same goes for you," Flicker growled, glaring at Ruby.
Flash sighed as he watched the two bicker. Leo looked as though he wasn't sure what to make of the situation.
"Well," Leo said finally, "It's time to go meet the twins."
We followed him out of the Pokemon Center and down the towns central road. I marveled at how similar this world was to my own. Minus the Pokemon walking around, of course.
Eventually, Leo turned off onto a side road that lead into a quieter part of town. I eyed the scenery with wonder while Flicker and Ruby argued in front of me. Flash walked silently beside the two, looking lost in thought. Leo walked in front of us occasionally glancing around in the woods as if looking for something or someone.
After a few more minuets, he stopped in front of an average looking house. "Here we are," he stated, turning around to look at us.
I looked at the house and snorted. "That place? These super powerful kids live here?"
Leo looked at me, a smile playing on his lips. "Yes. Did you expect a mansion? Or perhaps a castle?"
"Well... yeah," I replied.
"Always leave it to children to have such wild imaginations," he laughed.
"You're a child, too," Flicker pointed out.
"Er..."
Whatever Leo was about to say was drowned out by a loud thump, followed by the sound of something breaking.
Leo quickly opened the door. "CELESTIA! What did I say about eating that cake while I was out?!" He demanded, stepping into the house. Flash, Flicker, Ruby, and I followed him in.
A purple shape flashed across my vision, followed by childish giggling. Flash yelped in surprise and Flicker laughed. Ruby glared at him and he fell silent.
"Celestia!" Leo called, "Come here!"
"But then you will take my cake!" a child- like voice whined.
Leo sighed, "You're not supposed to be having cake."
"But I like cake!" the voice exclaimed.
"You know, some day you're going to eat every cake in the world, and then there won't be any cake left to eat," Leo stated.
"No more cake? Ever?" the voice inquired.
"Ever," Leo answered.
There was a flash of light, and the girl that I saw at the beginning of the year appeared in front of Leo. I jumped back and Flash yelped in surprise again. Ruby and Flicker gasped.
"No way!" Flicker exclaimed, "She can use her Pokemon moves in human form?!"
The purple- haired girl walked up to Leo and reluctantly hand him a plate with a large, chocolate cake on it. A portion appeared to be missing, and chocolate was smeared across her face.
Leo took the cake and wiped the chocolate off of Celestia's face.
"Where's you're sister?" he asked, "I have some Shifters here who would like to meet you two."
"YAY, NEW FRIENDS!" Celestia cheered, "I love new friends!"
Celestia looked behind Leo and spotted the four of us standing there. "FRIENDS!" she exclaimed happily, running up to us, "HI!"
She looked at me, and laughed. "Eevee!" she cheered, "EEVEE! EEVEE! EEVEE'S THE BEST EEVEE!" she sang, and danced a little bit, seeming pleased with her deduction.
"Wow, you're smart!" Ruby exclaimed, bending down to talk to Celestia.
"YAY!" Celestia squealed.
"Yes, it is very exciting meeting new people. Now, where is your sister so that she can meet them, too?" Leo questioned patiently.
"She is talking to the girl up stairs," Celestia answered.
Leo's eyes widened in surprise. "What?" he asked, a hint of panic in his voice.
"A weird girl came in," Celestia explained, "She said you had asked her to play with us!"
In a flash, Leo dashed towards the steps and headed up to the second level of the house. Everyone froze for a moment, then Ruby raced after him with Flicker and Flash in pursuit.
"Get Celestia!" she called as she passed me.
"Why do I have to?" I demanded, but she was already gone. I sighed.
"What are we doing?" Celestia asked as I picked her up.
"Uh... we... are.... playing... hide-n-go seek!" I exclaimed, "They're hiding and we have to catch them!"
"I love hide- n- go seek!" Celestia cheered gleefully as I walked up the steps.
I had just reached the top of the steps when I heard Leo shout, "Luna!"
I raced towards the place where the shout had come from and halted in the door way.
Leo stood facing a girl who was almost his mirror image. She wore the same shirt, but with a blue triangle and red sleeves and her scarf was red instead of blue. She wore red pants with red sneakers. Her red hair was chopped short and she had golden eyes.
Luna, in the strange form I had seen her earlier, was entangled in a net and snarling viciously.
"Sis!" Celestia cried out, trying to break free from my grip, "Luna! LUNA!!"
"Shh... It's going to be alright," I soothed her, and she stopped yelling.
The red haired girl was the first to speak. "Long time, no see," she stated, malice lacing her words.
"Hello, Lia," Leo said, his voice strained.
"I guess you two know each other?" Flicker asked.
"You bet we do," Lia snarled.
"What are you doing here?" Leo asked, shaken, "How'd you get in?"
"Aw, is that anyway to greet me?" Lia taunted.
"You're right," Leo agreed, "How about we talk this out? You release Luna, and we'll have a conversation. Do you want tea? Or coffee?"
"Hmm..." Lia thought for a moment. "Nah. I'll just take what I came for and leave you be. I'm on a tight schedule, ya know?"
A blur of red flashed past me, and Celestia was snatched from my grasp before I could even comprehend the situation.
"Wait!" Leo shouted, "Come back!"
There was a flash of blue, and Ruby, Flash, Flicker, and I were left alone in the room.
"What just happened?" I asked, bewildered.
"I think... Celestia and Luna were just kidnapped," Flicker explained.
"We have to follow them!" Ruby shouted, shoving past me and racing down the stairs and out the house. Flicker and Flash followed close behind.
"Wait!" I exclaimed, racing after them, "We couldn't even see them when they ran out! How are we supposed to catch up to them?"
"Less talking, more running!" Ruby shouted back.
"Easy for you to say!" I shouted back, "You run from you problems everyday, so you're used to it."
Ruby skidded to a stop and turned around to glare at me. "What did you say?" she demanded.
A warning bell went off in my head, and I decided it was probably a really bad idea to say that. Guilt clawed at my conscious, and my face turned red from shame.
"L-less talking, more running," I stuttered, picking up a quick jog and passing Ruby, whose gazed burned my back. Thankfully, it seemed she decided to let the comment slide for the moment. I heard the sound of quick steps behind me and let out a silent sigh of relief.
As we continued to run after the others, a silence fell that informed me Ruby was still mad at me. I couldn't really blame her, though. Flicker and Flash began whispering comforting comments to her, and she calmed slightly. A thorn of jealously pricked my heart, but I brushed it aside.
After running for a few minutes, I caught sight of a blue figure walking towards us on the path.
"Leo?!" Ruby called.
The teen walked up to us, panting and covered in sweat. "She got away," he growled between gasps, "Someone helped her, and I don't know where she went."
"Who was that girl?" Flicker asked, "And what Pokemon are you? How'd you move that fast?"
"Why would they be after two five- year- olds?" Ruby questioned, "Are they really that powerful?"
"Why would you leave them alone if they were that powerful?" I demanded, "And you clearly knew that girl. How?"
"Uh..." Leo struggled with where to start amidst the barrage of question.
"Um, let's wait a moment for Leo to catch his breath," Flash suggested, "Then we can ask our questions."
Ruby sighed. "Yeah, good idea, Flash."
Leo sat on the path, grateful. The rest of us followed suit.
"I really don't want you kids to get involved in this," Leo sighed once he caught his breath, "But you're here, so I guess I don't have a choice."
"You're not that much older than us!" I protested, "Stop calling us kids!"
Leo laughed. "I guess I should start by addressing that. You see, I'm actually a lot older than I look, because Legendaries age differently than normal Shifters."
"I'm sorry- what?" Ruby asked, "Did you just say you're a Legendary?!"
"Legendaries?" I asked, "Are those the things you were talking about last night, Ruby? The super powerful Pokemon?"
"I'm Latios," Leo explained, "Although I prefer to go by Leo. That girl we just ran into is Latias. She's my sister, and she normally goes by Lia."
"You two aren't on very good terms, are you?" Flicker asked.
"Not really," Leo answered, "She and a group of Shifters have been targeting the twins for awhile now, although I'm not sure why."
"And yet you left them?" I demanded, "By themselves? You must be the worst guardian ever."
"Maybe I am," Leo admitted, "Although that house was supposed to have defenses so strong no one should be able to get though without being accompanied by me or one of the others in charge of watching them."
"Then where are those 'others' you're talking about?" I questioned.
"They're very busy," Leo replied, "They only check in on occasion."
"Wow, guardians of the year award goes to you and those other people," I stated sarcastically, "You must be a real hit in the babysitter business."
"Shimmer, be quiet!" Ruby snapped,
"I get it- I messed up," Leo sighed, "But I'll say it again, there is no way she should have been able to get past those defenses. Unless maybe..." He trailed off in thought.
"Unless maybe what?" Flicker asked.
Leo shook his head. "Nothing. It's a dumb idea- and impossible. Anyway, I'm going to start looking for Celestia and Luna." Leo stood up and dusted off his pants. "I'll lead you four back to the house. There should be enough food there to last you until the Pokemon Shifter Academy finds you. If not, there's plenty of resources in the surrounding forest. I'll turn off the security system so you can come and go as you please." He started walking back to the house.
"I'm going with you," Ruby stated.
"You shouldn't get involved in this mess anymore than you already are," Leo replied, "Please, just stay at the house."
"No," Ruby insisted, "I'm going to go with you. The PSA probably thinks we're dead, and I doubt they'll come looking for us anytime soon. The fastest way home is getting that portal fixed up as soon as possible."
"You don't understand," Leo explained, "This situation is dangerous. You're kids. Please stay where it's safe."
"I'll follow you anyway," Ruby stated, "So we can travel as a group, strength in number and all, or we can secretly follow, and thus increase the amount of danger we'll face. Your choice!"
"I guess there's no convincing you," Leo sighed. He turned to Flash, Flicker, and I. "What about you three?"
"Wherever she goes, I go," Flicker stated while Flash nodded in agreement.
"Are you three crazy?!" I demanded, "This guy just said that both he and his sister are Legendaries, which you said are insanely powerful. We couldn't stand up to them! And what if there are even more Legendaries? What help will we be?"
"Better than standing around and waiting to be saved," Flicker argued, "But if you want to stay in that house, all alone, in a land you're unfamiliar with, be my guest."
I growled. "Fine. I guess I don't have a choice, now do I?"
"You're all really set on this, aren't you?" Leo asked. Everyone nodded in confirmation. "Alright, I'll take you with me. But you have to listen to everything I say, got it?" We all nodded in agreement. "Good. Now that we're all on the same page, let's go. But don't blame me if you get killed."
