The morning went quickly. We caught up at morning tea.
"Do you mind if we sit by ourselves so we can talk?"
I joggled my head like one of those toys that sit on the dash of a car. Head bobbling like mad as the vehicle moved. "Where do you want to go?"
Keean pointed to a tree no one was sitting under. I pulled an apple out of my bag and noticed he didn't have anything so offered him a bite. He took it off me, grinned and took the biggest bite ever then gave me back half an apple. I stared wide eyed at it. He burst into laughter and offered me the bitten half of the apple back. I chuffed and slapped him on the shoulder. He pretended to cower.
"You are an arse aren't you?" I said.
He laughed again and leaned back on one elbow, his body tilted towards me then took a smaller bite of his half of the apple. Once he'd swallowed it he said, "What's your favourite colour?" He took another bite while he waited for me to answer.
I thought about the question. "Green...but I really like purple." I thought some more then added. "I love burgundy too."
Keean laughed and shook his head.
"What?" I frowned.
"It was a simple question. I chose it because I thought out of all the questions I want to ask you it would be the easiest to answer." He sighed, looked at me intensely with his amazing blue eyes and added, "You're unbelievable."
I lay down on my side facing him and touched his eyebrow. "Okay it's blue."
Keean grabbed my hand. He stopped me from touching him and peered at me. "Are you sure?"
"Yes. Today it's blue."
"So it changes every day?"
"I guess." I laughed.
Keean lay on his back and still holding my hand pulled me closer so I was looking down at him. "Why does it change every day and why is it blue today?"
He touched my cheek with his finger. The sensation sent a wave of goose bumps over my body. "You're going red."
"It's blue today because your eyes are blue. If I'm being honest it's really green."
He laughed some more. Then the bell rang. Keean leaned closer and kissed me on the lips. He left his lips just close enough for me to feel his breath. "Looks like I'll only have enough time to ask one question per morning tea. I'll have to make tomorrows a better question," he whispered.
I ran my hand through his hair and sighed because morning tea had been too short. "It's not your turn tomorrow. It's mine."
He held my eyes with his and said, "Okay" against my lips. Keean put his hand at the back of my head and kissed me harder. We were both lost in the moment when we heard.
"Come on you two!"
We looked toward the group. Katie was waving for us to join them. We all did Phys. Ed together. Keean held my hand as we walked towards them.
"Shit," I gasped ripping my hand from his grasp. "I haven't changed into my gym gear. Meet you there," I shouted and bolted to the toilets.
We had moved on from basketball and were now playing soccer. Keean and I were on different teams. My team sucked. Mr. Cristaudo had put me in as one of the full backs. The other was Gordon Rice and our goalie was Joe Barushy. Our defence was pretty weak. We were getting close to finishing when the other team made a break. Chris, Keean and Nick came hurtling towards us. I moved forward to tackle Chris who passed off to Keean. Gordon moved in on him while I bolted as fast as I could to back him up. Keean then off loaded to Nick who took the shot and scored the final goal of the game. I was leaning over, my hands on my knees sucking in deep breaths when Keean came up behind me and slapped me on the butt as he walked past. He grinned when I turned my head quickly.
"Nice arse, Johnson."
I chased after him but he took off. I was too beat to continue.
We sat across from each other in History. Keean went to detention at lunch and we met up in Biology. Mr. McDonald was watching us like a hawk. We couldn't say much to each other. Keean held my hand as we walked to Chemistry. I noticed some of the year eleven girls give me a dirty look as we passed them. I figured they must have had crushes on Keean and didn't like the fact he was with me. I smiled and felt pretty special.
He noticed, bent down and asked, "What are you grinning about?"
"Just am." I smirked.
Keean laughed and let go of my hand as we entered Chemistry. The lesson finished quickly. As we left the classroom he asked if I had time to walk with him to his truck before the bus came.
"Yes, the bus doesn't usually come until three fifteen."
Keean chucked his bag in the cab then wrapped his arms around me. "I had a good day," he said.
"Me too," I whispered and put my hand on his neck.
He kissed me on the cheek and sucked on my earlobe. I cringed. For the second time that day a shiver of goose bumps caressed me. He laughed and tried to do it again but I pushed his head away.
"Okay," he said as he let go of me. "Gotta go."
Keean climbed into the cab and turned on the key. "I'll see you in the morning."
I nodded as the engine roared into life.
He hung out the window, grabbed my arm and pulled me towards the car. Keean kissed me on the lips and smiled. "See you, Charlie Johnson."
I smiled and bit down on my lip.
He reached out again and pulled it free with his finger. "That drives me crazy."
