We were a little late getting to English. I kept my head down and cradled my bag against my chest as we walked into class. Katie made our excuses to Mrs. Keyo. Once we were settled at our desk she whispered, "Couldn't take his eyes off you."
I frowned at her.
"True," she added.
Mrs. Keyo was handing out sheets of paper. "Okay, this is a song called 'American Pie' by Don Mclean. I'm going to play it in a minute and I want you to listen carefully to it. I'll play it twice then I'll divide you into four groups to discuss the meaning of the words, so listen carefully."
She played the song. I followed the words as Don Mclean sang them.
A long, long time ago...
I can still remember
How that music used to make me smile...
So bye-bye, Miss American pie.
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
And them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singin', "this'll be the day that I die.
"This'll be the day that I die."
Once it had played through twice she started to divide us into groups. I hoped and prayed Keean wasn't in our group. Thankfully he wasn't. We had to move the desks around so we could face our group members. Once we all sat down again I looked around to see he was seated with his group facing directly at me. I glanced at Katie.
She grinned then leaned over and whispered, "He purposely moved his chair and desk there." Then she raised her eyes and grinned again. "So he can look at you I bet."
I tilted my head as if to say, 'oh please'. She laughed and touched the side of her nose.
Nicholas Harrison pulled his chair up beside me, "Hey, hottie."
I jokingly glared at him. Then we both laughed.
Katie kicked me under the desk and whispered in my ear, "He didn't like that."
"What?" I said puzzled.
"Harrison flirting with you. Do it some more. Go on. I want to see his reaction again."
"I'm not doing it," I hissed. I didn't have to worry. Nick kept on without any help from me. He touched me any chance he could get. Leaned in as often as he could and pulled at strands of my hair. I never once looked in Keean's direction. At the end of the lesson we had to move the chairs back into place.
Katie couldn't contain herself. "He looked like he wanted to kill Nick. Oh my God, Charlie I bet he has a bigger crush on you than you have on him."
"Get real," I said but hoped it was true as we gathered our things.
Nick came over to us with a big grin on his face. "Hey sexy. Can I walk you to your next lesson?"
I was getting sick of his attention. "Come on, Nick. Let it go. You're getting on my nerves."
He grinned and looked at me with pleading on his face. "So how about it, Charlie? You want to go out some time?"
I rolled my eyes at him. I couldn't believe he was carrying on the way he was.
"No thank you, Nick."
"Ah come on, Charlie. I'm in love."
I sighed and was getting really sick of his shit. Before I could say anything Keean's deep voice sounded behind us.
"What fucking part of no don't you understand, Harrison?"
Nick spun around.
I kept walking.
"Fuck off, Crone. This has nothing to do with you."
I glanced back as I heard Keean say, "Yeah...you're right. It's nothing to do with me." He looked towards me. Gave me a pained expression and headed off in a different direction.
Katie elbowed me. "Well?" she grinned smugly.
"What?" I said as I smirked back at her.
"You should have seen his face every time Nick hassled you. He likes you, Charlie." I laughed as she tapped the side of her nose and added. "Katie knows."
