The Kitchen Chat

As Missus Hudson and John interacted with the newly mobile Watson, Sherlock pulled Susanna into the kitchen, "What, Sherlock?"

"How did you know that Rosie would start walking today?" He probed. She shrugged her shoulders.

"I didn't. All I knew was that she would start walking soon, a conclusion drawn from observing her. It was up to Rosie when she'd actually start, and with help from you two she was able to make the milestone."

"So you observed that she was developing into the walking stage?"

"Yes. Observing children and keeping detailed record of their development is crucial. I've explained it before," Susanna answered and her eyes fixed on him, "Why are you asking me?"

"Instead of saying that you were going off what you had seen, you said you observed." He conceded. She almost smirked.

"The Great Consulting Detective is baffled at my being observant?" She mused, "Is it such a shock?"

"I do not often come upon people who observe their surroundings instead of just seeing them. It's," Sherlock almost chuckled, "Strange."

Her mouth formed an O as she nodded in realization, "I see. Well, I do get that a lot I s'pose."

"You do?"

"Yes. I am often told that one of my better qualities is that I am astute."

Silence filled the space between them, interrupted by cheers from the living room. Susanna turned around and poured a cup of tea, adding a few sugars and walking to the window. Sherlock remained still. He began to deduce her, trying to find something new.

"Red."

"Hmm?"

"Your favorite color. Followed closely by black, blue and purple."

"Yes." She continued to gaze out of the window and sip her tea.

"You never answered my question, Susanna."

"The one about cats?"

"Yes." Susanna turned around.

"Cats have a broader range of personality than dogs, who tend to be extra affectionate and active in general. Cats make you work for their attention, and are self sufficient," Susanna chuckled, "Plus, cats can purr. Dogs cannot. Is that enough to answer your question, Sherlock?"

He nodded stiffly. She had been able to recall the question without prompting, which further interested him. But he set it aside for now, "I believe it does."
