Thirty
Angrily you wandered through the streets. Tears filled your eyes, it felt like a fire was burning in your chest. It hurt to breathe. You couldn't think straight.
Again and again, the feeling of magic chased through your body, wanting to take possession of you. It took all your willpower not to lose control.
Blue light filled the streets and made it look like a thousand firelights were trying to set Piltover on fire.
Somehow, in your rage, you found your way back to the enforcers' headquarters.
You climbed onto the roof and slipped through the window into Marcus' office.
You didn't know what you were doing in that place, but a feeling just dragged you back there. It was like an insatiable desire, an ache that only stopped when your eyes fell on the bomb lying on the desk.
Taking a deep breath, you closed your eyes and forced yourself to calm down.
Everything inside you was boiling. Everything felt like a lie, so useless and worthless.
But at the sight of the bomb, you remembered why you really came back.
The attacks. And the stolen Hextech orb.
Part of your deal with Jayce and Viktor had been to take care of the problem discreetly and quickly. It had been several days and you had made no progress.
"Shit!", you cursed and grabbed the thing to look at it from all sides.
The drawings still didn't make any sense. They were just jumbled pictures. But for some reason, it seemed like they weren't parts of the bomb.
They seemed staged, fake even.
You sighed at the sight. As you tilted it, some dirt was trickling out of the cracks.
But it was neither dry nor really wet. Between the crumbs shimmered something purple.
Puzzled, you frowned and put the bomb down to look at the dirt more closely. Something about it looked awfully familiar. Maybe it was the scent, which definitely smelled like the Undercity. Or maybe it was the purple sparkle among the dirt as you turned your head to the side.
Between your fingers you rubbed a bit of it.
"Shimmer?", you asked yourself.
The sight of the liquid almost made your breath get stuck in your throat.
For a moment you stared at your fingers.
The thought of returning to the place where you had suffered for years made you want to die. But not being able to show any results would turn the council against you. In the end, you had no choice.
Sighing heavily, you closed your eyes and massaged the bridge of your nose.
"Shit...", you let the bomb slide into your pocket and climbed out the window. "If I must..."
With a grim look you stood in front of the hidden door between the rocks and took a deep breath. Your legs were shaking, but your hands were clenched into fists.
Whatever was waiting behind this door would awaken memories. Terrible memories that you had pushed to the back of your mind.
You glanced over your shoulder.
Behind you flowed the river, calm and sparkling in the moonlight. The water was relatively clean, considering that it was the river that separated the Topside from Zaun.
Here, in this place, you had often sat and thought about how it would be to just run away. But the chains on your legs had not made it possible at that time.
When they finally threw you away, you prayed that you would never have to return to this place. And now you had come back voluntarily.
Your eyes returned to the door. Your gaze darkened.
Slowly your hand rose.
Blue light wrapped around your body. The hairs on the back of your neck stood up. Power filled you.
You knocked, loud and clear. Then you waited.
Nothing happened.
Again you knocked.
But again nothing happened.
Your shoulders tensed.
"Singed!", you shouted and let your fist bang against the door.
Groaning under the force, the metal buckled. Dust swirled up.
Something moved inside. A shadow appeared.
Slowly the door opened.
As soon as his scarred face appeared, you couldn't help but grit your teeth angrily. With a mighty blow you tore open the door, your hand jumped forward and wrapped itself around his neck.
Surprised, the doctor fell back and dropped the knife.
You looked at him with dark eyes.
"Did you miss me?", you growled.
Breathing hastily, he looked you up and down. He didn't seem to recognize you. But it was no wonder, the last time he had treated you was about eight years ago.
"You are..."
"Your favourite shimmer test object.", you finished his sentence. "Bet you didn't expect your work to turn against you, huh?"
Confusion appeared on his face.
"This power is not shimmer.", he noted, tracking the blue sparks with his eyes.
Grimly, you pulled a face.
"No. Somebody else did this to me. But your experiments kept me alive long enough to make this happen. The shimmer had other effects."
"What... what are you doing here?", he tried to reach the knife but you stepped on his hand. "Argh! My experiments saved you! You should thank me."
"I won't. But if you tell me something, I'll let you live. See it as a repayment. Thanks to your shimmer, I was able to survive long enough to see this day."
Gasping, he turned his gaze away.
You followed his eyes, spotting the strange creature that was slowly rotting away in a tank filled with strange liquid.
You grinned.
"Or shall we say, tell me what I want to know and I won't destroy your life's work?", you asked him in a threading voice.
His eyes widened. But he refused to be scared.
"What do you want to know?", he asked through clenched teeth.
With your free hand, you pulled out the bomb from your pocket to show him.
"Where can I find the person who made this?", you asked.
For a moment, he eyed the bomb. It was obvious that he was familiar with the sight. His eyebrows knitted together as he looked back at you.
"You can't deal with those higher powers.", he hissed.
A surprised yet amused grin appeared on your lips.
"Oh?", you tilted your head. "So it's Silco's work. Tell me, what would hurt him the most?"
