Death was a regular, daily occurrence for James Moriarty. This wasn't one he could ever have anticipated or been prepared for.
No could have ever seen it coming.
When they'd met Diana everything was perfect. She was a happy bubbly woman who was more than ready to help the two men have a child. She'd agreed to be their segregate and did everything most women did.
She ate healthy food, did as much exercise as she could and helped the men with the shopping for all the baby clothes.
Jim had only ever seen Sherlock so happy on one other occasion and that had been their wedding day.
What made the whole situation worse was that they were there. In the delivery room. Everything was going great. Diana wasn't even screaming, just gritting her teeth.
Apparently, someone up there then decided that Sherlock and Jim were looking a bit too happy and wanted them to be miserable.
Diana's face had gone slack, machines blaring. Doctors and nurses surged towards the table, shouting about Diana's heart.
They'd been pushed out the door just as someone shouted 'get the baby out!'.
They'd curled together on a chair, waiting nervously for the news on Diana and their baby girl.
A doctor approached them, face blank. That sent Jim stomach plummeting towards the ground. Sherlock's grip on his hand was like steel, unbreakable. Jim didn't even care if his fingers got crushed, he'd just wanted to know if their baby and friend were okay.
Then... The doctor told them.
Their bay girl... Diana... They didn't make it. Diana's heart failed and the little girl that had been growing inside her had strangled on the umbilical cord.
Sherlock's whole body slumped, his eyes glossing over and mouth turned down at the corners. He was trembling.
Jim had done his best to thank the doctor before they left, unusually silent.
When they got home they'd climbed straight into bed and curled together. Sherlock had cried into Jim's chest, just letting all his emotions run free. Jim did his best, once again, to comfort Sherlock.
The next day, Jim had broken down and Sherlock was the one to comfort him.
They tried to get on with their lives and they succeed, minus the occasion sob session on one another's shoulders. But then it was time for the funeral.
Diana's family looked at them, the blame clear in their fiery eyes. They blamed Sherlock and Jim for her death and in a way, they were right. She'd likely be alive now had she not wanted to help them.
Needless to say, they didn't stay at the post funeral get together for very long at all.
The next months were difficult for both men. They were grieving both the loss of a friend and the loss of their child.
It was new for both of them. Grieving.
They didn't speak of it often, just went about life as usual but with clouds of misery hung over their heads. At night, they'd still cry sometimes and hold each other close, knowing that they'd always have one another.
Eventually, they lost contact with many of theirs friends and even their families. They rarely left the house, not wanting to see happy children and parents. Not wanting to see people happy at all, really.
Jim proposes they move away, start afresh. Sherlock goes along with the idea, wanting to be away from Baker Street and London as soon as possible.
They move somewhere the completely opposite of London. They go to a small knit community on an isle they couldn't pronounce the name of.
There, they meet a girl named Kulani. She immediately takes to the couple, helping them fit in. In many ways, she reminds them of Diana. And yet, she was the complete opposite of her.
It was odd.
Soon, their pain fades and they start their new life. They make new friends, become part of the people here. They tell Kulani why they moved from London and she smiles, admiring their bravery and kissing each of their cheeks. She tells them it must be hard. It killed her to lose her brother and her mother had never fully recovered from it.
Eventually, they adopt. A little boy. He's the most beautiful baby they've ever laid eyes on.
Everything is perfect.

"Sherlock!" Kulani rushes into Sherlock and Jim's home, the door always being open to the village. Everyone here trusted everyone. They were all extremely close.
"Lani?" Sherlock replies, meeting her half way.
"Come on, quick! You'll miss it!"
He's dragged out of the house, all questions dying on how tongue as he takes in the scene before him.
Jim is standing about a metre away from their son, holding his arms open with a grin. The one year old, Luka, blinks at his dad once before releasing a shrill giggle and rushing towards Jim, his own arms open as his little feet stomp.
Jim steps closer and scoops him up, pressing kisses all over his face.
"Well done, little man. You're growing up so fast" Jim spots Sherlock then. "Sher, did you see?!"
Sherlock nods and crosses to his husband and son, kissing Jim's lips and then Luka's head. Luka giggles again and presses a hand to Sherlock's cheek.
"Dada." He scowls a little, mock serious. He pulls an adorable face as he does.
Sherlock laughs and kisses his head again. "I saw, baby. You were walking like a big boy"
Luka's attention turns to a dog that was bark behind them, no longer interested in his smiling parents. He's pointing at the dog and making noises in an attempt to copy the animal.
Jim just kisses him again before all four of them enter the house again, all bubbling with excitement.
