Chapter 6
Sophie clenched her fists as Keefe walked off. Why did he have to call her Foster? Also, why did he walk in the wrong direction? After a few seconds of pondering she decided that boys were just complicated. Grady was right when he said that she should stay away from them. They acted as if girls didn't have feelings, as if girls were just a puppet on their strings. Well, every boy except Dex.
Sophie continued down the hall in a daze, thinking of the worst boy in the whole school. He had all the girls at Foxfire tied around his perfectly manicured finger. He also had a perfect life, with the perfect family, perfect friends, perfect grades, perfect reputation, and perfect looks. He may look innocent, but his movie-star smile held so much evil. His teal eyes were gorgeous, but terrifying. Fitz Vacker tormented Sophie more than even his bratty sister, Biana. He had never spoken to Sophie, but that said it all. He knew she existed, but she was apparently scum that was not even worth his time. Whenever she "accidentally" bumped into him, he would just walk past without glancing down. That normally wouldn't bother Sophie, but Fitz had everything he could ever wish for, everything she had ever wanted. Basically, Sophie was jealous.
When Sophie reached the chemistry classroom she stealthily snuck into her seat. She was trained in stealth, so of course Ms.Galvin didn't notice her. But Biana did.
Biana rose her hand high in the air, and Ms.Galvin called on her. "Ms.Galvin, Sophie is here."
"Lovely, why don't you name all the elements in the second group of the periodic table since you missed the beginning of class." Ms.Galvin had a smug grin on her face, but she didn't know Sophie had a photographic memory. That smug grin was going down.
The rest of the class stared at Sophie with amused smiles. They thought she was dead meat. Their faces fueled Sophie's determination and an image of the periodic table flashed in her mind. "Beryllium, Magnesium, Calcium, Strontium, Barium, and Radium," She said in a sweet, innocent voice.
Ms.Galvin stood there with her mouth agape. Sophie was pound of herself, but then the whispers started.
"Nerd"
"Know-it-all"
"Freak"
The last one hit close too home and she put her head down and covered her ears in an attempt to stop the whispering. It never stopped. Not until the bell rang and Sophie was saved from her own miserable thoughts.
She didn't want to go to class, but she had to keep up her reputation. If anyone saw her ditching they would probably think she had an evil twin.
Actually, the real reason she didn't want to ditch was because she didn't want to intensify the whispers. Gossip got around Foxfire fast, and Sophie was already the focus of most of it. She didn't want to be scorned more.
With her head down, Sophie headed to English. It was her least favorite subject because she never had time after school for the loads of homework her English teacher, Mr.Donwell, gave her. He also had the MOST boring lectures in the history of boring lectures. Anything that rhymed now made Sophie cringe because of his love for rhyming poetry. He also had a monotone which made Sophie fall asleep every time they read a piece of literature. He would then slap Sophie's desk to make her wake-up. Even though his class was terrible, it wasn't half as bad as chemistry.
Sophie sat in a random seat in the back of the class as she walked into Mr.Donwell's classroom. Mr.Donwell wasn't in the classroom yet, so all the kids were talking amongst themselves.
Sophie suddenly felt a tap on her shoulder and turned around to see who was annoying her this time. Luckily, it was just Marella, Sophie's one and only friend at Foxfire. They weren't even that good of friends, but she had once saved Sophie from sitting at what she called the "losers table." After that they had talked to each other every once in awhile, mostly because Marella needed to tell Sophie gossip that couldn't be shared with anyone. Marella would also sit with Sophie during lunch at least once a week. Sophie had no clue why Marella bothered to talk to her because she was a stereotypical gossip girl that would never be seen with a loser like Sophie. Sophie didn't complain, though, because she could use someone to talk to every now and then.
"What, Marella?" Sophie asked.
"Did you hear that there is a new kid? He's pretty cute. I saw him as I was walking to this class."
"Yeah, I talked to him and showed him where APUSH was," Sophie answered with a nod.
Marella gasped for some reason. "Oooooooh, what did he say? I need to do some digging on him. He seems like he might have an interesting past because he transferred in the middle of the year."
Sophie sighed, poor Keefe wouldn't be able to escape Marella's questions. When she set her mind on someone, there was no stopping her. "Marella, are you sure you should try to dig up info on him. Even if he does have an interesting past he might not want the whole school to know about it." Sophie hoped she didn't go too far. She didn't want to lose her only friend.
Instead of reacting the way Sophie thought she would, Marella just laughed. "Why do you care about what the new guy thinks of this. Does someone have a crush? And you also didn't answer my first question, did he say anything interesting??"
"Marella, first of all, I just met him. So no, I most definitely do not have a crush on him," Sophie stated with certainty. Yes, he was hot, but he could be part of the Neverseen for all she knew. "Second of all, he didn't say anything worth getting spread around the whole school. We basically just told each other our names."
"What's his name?" Marella asked.
"Keefe," Sophie answered.
Right as she spoke, Mr.Donwell walked into the room. His monotone voice boomed. "Everyone, finish the essay we started in class yesterday. Under no circumstances are you allowed to talk. If you do talk you have to go to my detention." Everyone groaned when he mentioned his detention. The teachers at Foxfire would each take turns monitoring after school detention and it was terrible. Or, at least, that's what Sophie heard. The teachers were allowed to make the students do whatever the teacher wanted them to do. Mr.Donwell would always make his attendees listen to him read poetry, and, of course, the poetry rhymed.
With that thought Sophie got out her iPad that Foxfire had bought for all of it's students, and continued typing her essay.
