The last wish

FIFTY CHAPTERS LOVES. FIFTY!!! Just want to say a quick - hopefully - thank you to everyone who has been involved. Readers, silent or not, voters, the Wattpaders who's left lovely and heartwarming comments, the people who gives me much needed feedback and constructive criticism. I thank your patience all of you and that you are on this journey with me and the Gladers. Sorry the fiftieth chapter was such a depressing one xxxx.

Newt's POV

And the light flickers on. We're in a long winding corridor that somewhat resembles an abandoned bit clean hospital my Tegan says. We walk down the corridor in the direction that Winston suggests. Eventually, we get to a huge, grey metal door that has a flashing red light sign above that reads: EXIT.

"Seriously?" Frypan asks sassily.

"Be careful, get behind me." I motion my love of my life to stay behind me.

She actually obeys for once and Tommy is first to enter... The lab. The lab is littered with shattered glass and machinery and shards of metal. Izzy picks up a bullet and when she realises what it is she drops it immediately. All of us start to explore and we discovered that the lab must have been attacked recently: there's still fresh bodies spotted all over. Me and Minho walks past some rooms and there is two bodies on operating tables, the sheets pulled over their head's, the sheets stained with blood. I grab Minho's arm and gently push him away from the horrendous sight. I see Tegan the other side of the lab with Chuck, Frypan and Winston and I smile. All is okay, we've escaped. I look on a futuristic-like screen and I see what a beetle blade sees - the Glade. No sign of Gally.

"Hey, Newt! It's you." Chuck says from across the way.

Me and Tommy rush to him and I see me and medical details on the screen, the next screen is Winston.

"What's this do?" Tommy says wondering.

"Tom-"

"Hello, my name is doctor Ava Paige. You're all probably feeling scared, angry, frightened, confused. It's okay you feel that way, but you see you're special. You won't remember it but our sun has scorched the Earth..."

The screen is playing the video with the tight-faced woman I remember, it's now showing scenes of fire and devastation. I hear Teresa and Izzy's cries. I must admit I get teary too.

"-But what came next was even worse. We call it The Flare. It goes into what we call the kill zone. It's a virus that invades the brain knocking out all sense of reason, humanity and sanity. You see, you brave survivors are special, you're immune to it. We at World In Catastrophe Kill Department are trying to find a cure. You've been tested under harsh environments to see what makes you special, what makes you different."

Suddenly bullets start in the background and the glass two-way mirror behind Ava Paige smashes into a million and one pieces.

"Not everyone agrees with our work - as you'll soon find out."

She holds a pistol gun to her temple...

"It may be to late for us - for me - but it's not for you. WICKED is good."

And she pulls the trigger. Teresa, Izzy and Tegan scream and Tegan hides her now soaked face of sobs into the dirty crook of my neck.

"She said we were special." I comment.

"Shut up Newt I tell you that all the time!" Tommy says dramatically.

Despite what we've just seen and heard, that makes us all break into glorious laughter. I notice Tommy turn away before the trigger was pulled, to a blonde-haired body.

"What do we do now?" Winston asks.

"I don't know. We live. We go out there-" Tommy replies but gets interrupted.

"No."

We all whip around like a crack. Gally. His purply-black veins bulge and throb voluminously. His head and body is covered in sweat and he pulls out a gun - and aims it at Tommy.

"Gally-" Tommy starts stepping closer with his arm's out.

"He's been stung. Be careful." Teresa mumbles.

"We must go back." Gally states emotionless.

I look at Tegan who's still in my arm's, she's shaking violently and staring at Gally in utter shock and terror. She knows who he's aiming at. Minho slowly walks and gets Tegan to follow him. He stands to the very right of Tommy, but at the back. She's after there and not right next to Tommy like me and her were. I edge closer to Tommy with a threatening look on my face aimed at Gally.

"No, Gally. We've escaped, we're free." Tommy says softly but also firm.

"We will never be free. We belong in the maze." Gally stops, breathing heavily, then steadies his shaking arm, "I'm sorry."

He pulls the trigger. There's a horrendous bang. I hear an ear-piercing, heart-wrenching scream. It's Tegan. Her brother was just shot.

"Thomas!" Tegan screams.

I look around to see Tommy okay, but Chuck isn't. He's stood in front of Tommy! He took the shucking bullet! Gally drops and I notice a spear through his chest and Minho without any weapon. Chuck drops like a fly and it finally registers with Tommy what Chuck has done. We crowd round him, Tommy and Tegan on the floor with him. I put my hand in my mouth to stop myself from bursting out crying as the ten year-old whimpers in agony.

"CHUCK!" Tommy screams sobbing.

"Stay with us Chuckie, you can do it." Tegan encourages helplessly, sobbing also.

Chuck smiles softly, "H-here." And he hand's Tommy a wooden figurine.

"No, Chuck. You-you've got to give it th-them." Tommy sobs.

I know about this figurine. It's a present for Chuck's parents that he made himself. He was hoping to give it to them when we escape.

"You-ou two do-do-do it-t." Chuck stammers, crying silently.

"We promise." Tegan and Tommy promises in defeat - it's Chuck's final wish.

"I-I love you all." Chuck says softly.

His beautiful pale brown eyes glaze over and his body goes floppy in Tegan and Tommy's arm's. Tommy and Tegan are now crying hysterically. I try to calm Tommy with Minho whilst Winston and Frypan try to do the same with Tegan. Izzy and Teresa cling to each other, sobbing, just not as much as Tommy and Tegan. They've never been close but it's just someone to help them stand. I'm crying too. Tommy pockets the figurine and shakes Chuck's dead, stone-cold body coated in blood gently because he's in disbelief. Tegan and Tommy are soaked in Chuck's blood - especially Tegan. Suddenly soldiers storm the lab, smashing the door, crashing in like and Earthquake.

"Kids! We're here to take you to safety. Come with us." One announces.

They're all in heavy, black and bulletproof armour with matching helmets and the biggest guns I've ever seen - or that there is anyway. We all turn to leave other than Tegan and Tommy.

"Come on you two!" Another one yells.

He then sees the ten year-old boy's body and his face softens. He tried to prise Tegan off the body but she lashes out and screams an un-Earthly sound. The other one that spoke managed to get Tommy off and they head to where the soldiers came in.

"Let me." I say to the one who's trying to get Tegan.

"Come on love, live, for him, for Chuck."

She nods and I support her up to the others.

"When we say go you leg it to the berg, following us, okay? We'll protect you." Another soldier yells.

We all nod.

"GO!"

We all leg it tripping and terrified. We make it into the very and it takes off sharpish. We fly over the Glade, the maze. I'm sat with Tegan on my right and Frypan on my left. Tommy is on Tegan's right, then Minho. Winston, Teresa, Izzy, Callum and Max and the seven others are opposite us and fills the circle. Tegan and Tommy are holding each other and I'm contemplating my time in the Glade, with and without Tegan. It was definitely better when her and Tommy came. All of our faces sting with tears and soldiers look at us with what seems, almost forced, sympathetic looks.

The end...

Well, not yet.
