Chapter 11

Her name was Sarah grey, she had green eyes and blonde hair.
This was all I knew about her.
I watched as people dropped flowers and candles and what not at her locker, where a small framed picture of her, with a large smile stood.
I marveled at the stark contrast to the lifeless girl that I met.

I didn't notice the people passing, the friends crying, I didn't notice the sad smiles the teachers were giving everybody.
They lost a friend, a sister, a girlfriend, a daughter.
I didn't know her, I didn't know what to feel for her.

I stared at her frame, as if she would jump out and tell me everything I wanted to know.

"Hi, were you a friend of Sarah's? "
A petite girl asked, her blue eyes shinning  with sorrow.

I didn't know what to say, so I just nodded.

She held out a pamphlet to me.
"This is her obituary, the wake's on Thursday. y. We'd really love for you to be there. "
She walked away after handing it to me.
I stared at the small booklet and I realized I didn't know, nobody really knew  her life and now we get to read it off a sheet of paper.

Everybody seemed dull and grey, like the life was sucked out of them.
It reminded me of the asylum and it gave me a really bad feeling.

I walked past Shelly in the bathroom, applying make up and she was bubbling about the goodbye party she was hosting for Sarah this weekend. I didn't know what to feel about that so I just walked away.

"Are you going to Sara's wake ? Kira asked me as we walked to our next class. "

"I - I don't really know, I didn't know her. "
I said, uncertain.

"I didn't know her too but I guess that's the point, we try to show the deceased that we might not really have been close but we'll always be here to remember them, we won't let their legacies die. "

"Yeah"
I said, as my memories carried me to another time, another death.

"Say something Mitchie aren't you going to say something?"
The swollen faced woman shook the little girl, wailing about her lost child.

"Cry, blame me, laugh, blame anybody just please don't be silent"
She begged, her body weight sagging to the floor.

"Please don't be silent"
She whispered this time, the little girl patted her back and stared at her with empty eyes.
Eyes that would never be filled again.

"Mitchie..... Mitchie "
Kira shook me as she called my name.
I blinked as my attention was returned to her.

"Hmm? "

"I said we can go together yeah? "

"Oh sure yeah "
I said, absentmindedly.

I sat in Tessa's car as she begrudgingly agreed to drive me to the hospital to see the old lady.

"Aren't you coming in? "
I asked as the car pulled to a stop.

"No way I'm going to see that old coot"
She shook her head.

I nodded, aunt Layla must've told her of the not so warm welcome she was given by Mrs Smith.
I found out her name from aunt Layla.

I folded my hands into my jeans.
I met the nice lady at the front desk and told her who I was coming to see and she gave me directions.
I decided to take their stairs, instead of the weird metal box they called an ......'elivitor' or so, it reminded me too much of things I'd rather forget.

"Hello Mrs Smith "
I pipped when I entered, she looked surprised to see me then her scowl took over her face.

"I thought you were gone kid "
She groaned out.

"I was, I came to see you. "

"Me? "
She said, not bothering to cover up the shock this time.

"Yup and I brought something absolutely amazing, my cousin Samuel says it's better than gold. "

I brought out two bars of chocolate, I gave Samuel all my allowance for this week and next week and it still wasn't enough to pay him but seeing Mrs Smith's smile, I believe it was worth it.

"Silly child"
She said, shaking her head.

She took a bar from me.
"The hospital food is wack, I owe you one kiddo"

Me heart beamed at her uncommon praise.
I stayed for a while before I remembered that Tessa was waiting for me . I bid her goodbye and she threatened me about not coming back with more chocolate.
I'm pretty sure Samuel cheated me but it's pretty much worth it.

I was walking down the hallway, towards the stairs when I saw a familiar mop of dark brown hair.
My breath hitched as I saw Nickolas rounding a corner.

My feet moved on their own accord even though I promised myself I'd stay away from him  since he clearly didn't want to help me.

He stopped and I froze. Did he know I was following him?..... Why was I following him?.
I decided to stop being creepy and go back to Tessa, when a white clad nurse started speaking to him.

"Aye.... She's waiting for you, I'm quite sure she misses you. "
She said with a small smile.
Nicholas thanked her and then walked down another hallway. Despite my better judgement, I followed him down the hallway.

He went into a room and I stood awkwardly outside, not knowing what to do.
My curiosity got the better of me, when I heard some yelling from inside.  I peeped through the hole, wondering who was inside with him. I was so focused on hearing the bits and pieces of information that I didn't hear the rather loud footsteps coming towards me.

The door was swiftly pulled open and I landed on my butt. An older man, with a familiar mop of dark brown hair looked at me as If I'd just grown two heads.

We looked at each other for a second, before Nickolas came up behind him, the shock on his face mirroring the one on the older man's face, only without the disdainful look the older man carried.

I raised a hand and waved sheepishly at Nickolas.
I saw him pinch the bridge of his nose again and mutter.
"Shit!"

He pushed past his father and gave me a hand. I clasped my sweaty hand around his cool one and he pulled me up, not before whispering. "Why do I always seem to find you in this situations."

I blushed crimson at his words.

He looked towards the older man
"Dad this is my..... Um this is mitchie, Tessa's cousin. "

His eyes raked me up and down and I swear his stare is harder to hold than Mr O'Brien. It shames me to say it but I found myself looking down, suddenly finding the ground more interesting.

He emanated power...power that would crush you if you stepped the wrong way.

After a second, his gaze was removed from me, dismissively.

"It's a new girl every week isn't it. "

I watched Nickolas clench and unclench his jaw as his father walked away.

"What are you even doing here."
He asked.

I looked away, preferring not to answer because in all truth, I didn't know what I was  doing there.

"I -you ....um"
I bit my lower lip, I didn't know what to say. For a second, I thought I saw his eyes flick to my lips as I bit them but his scowl was back in place so quick that I doubted my eyes.

"You, me, what "
He mocked.

"I came to see somebody, it's something you do when a friend is in the hospital, not that you would know, right? "
I snapped. I didn't know where all this anger was coming from but I was angry, first he didn't come to see me in the hospital then he left me at the library. I had every right to be angry.

His eyes softened a bit at my accusation.
"I didn't come to see you huh"
He said, more like a statement than a question.

I raised a brow at him as I nodded.
The slight softness in his eyes was gone.
"Are we friends? No .so why should I be obligated to care for you like a friend would."

I blinked. He didn't even deny it.

"No"
I ground out.
"We're not friends. That's why you didn't want to tutor me, right? We're not friends. "
I nodded and turned away, I wanted to hurt him physically and I was sure if I stayed anywhere near him, I would do just that.

I walked to the car, simmering with anger.
Tessa raised a questioning brow at my apparent anger but said nothing more.

Gahhh! I felt like pulling out my hair. Nickolas was so annoying.

Not friends  right? I'll show him not friends.

Nickolas:
"What do you mean you're pulling the plug. You can't do this! "
I yelled as I pushed away all the files on his table in rage.

He regarded me as though he were talking to a little child.
"It is a waste of everything, even she must be tired. She needs peace so instead of being a selfish little brat, think about her. "
He said cooly but the hard grip he had on my arm would betraye any guise of calmness he had.

"You can't do this. "
I said, more quietly than before.

I couldn't loose her. Not- not now.

"Give me some time... Please"
I begged.

I'm sure he was laughing at me, after all my rebellion, he has what he's always wanted. Me begging at his feet.

" Go to school, I'll think about it. "
He said dismissively as though it were not a person's life at stake.

I clenched my fists, unable to do anything as I stormed out of his home office.

I brushed past Brenda, not even bothering to exchange greetings. I heard her startled gasp behind me but I didn't care..
I eased my car into the school parking lot, my mind running with different possible outcomes of my father's decision.
I didn't know who to call for help, this was all messed up.

The day could not pass by any slower for me. Currently, Shelly is rubbing herself all over me in maths class. I need a distraction and she's ready and willing, so I pull her into my lap before the teacher enters the class and I start kissing her. Her kisses dosen't really do anything for me but I'm in desperate need of a distraction, I'll take anything at this point.

It's been approximately 5 minutes and 27 seconds of my ravishing Shelly and her endless moans and I have to say, the distraction is working really well.
In these past almost six minutes, I only thought about killing my dad for four minutes. I mean that has to count for something.

I open my eyes to see funny Mitchie -my nickname for her - clutching an eraser in her hand and staring at Shelly. She drops the eraser and then picks it up again after Shelly smirks at her. I resist the urge to smile, besides  myself.

Shelly crawls off my lap, not before whispering to me what she wanted us to do tonight.

The class goes by quickly and I'm not really paying attention anymore. The bell rings and it's all I can do not to jump out of my seat and run from this suffocating class.
Subconsciously, I look around and notice that funny mitchie is gone. I realize I did that a lot these days, look for her when we're in a room. Weird.

Shelly clings to my arm, smiling like she found a diamond. I know my friends don't really like her but she was one of my best friends before I moved away and even though u made it sure to her that we're not dating, she still matters to me. In a way..... I think.

"Can I talk to you? "
A small voice asks.

I look down, to see funny Mitchie.
No I do not have time for this, I need to sort out this issue with my dad.

"He's busy"
Shelly's clipped voice said sharply.

I watched as Mitchie clenched her jaw and I almost laughed out loud when she didn't even regard Shelly.
"Nickolas can I talk to you. "
She strained the Nickolas and at this, I let out a small snicker.

Shelly was about to protest but I removed her hand from mine, quickly. I did not need her laying ownership claims.

Her face turned bright red but I didn't let it bother me.
Mitchie led me into the janitors closet. It seemed like that had become our place now.

"Please tutor me. "
She pleaded.

I looked at her quizzically.
"That's what this is about? "

She nodded and reminded me of a small mouse.
"Aunt Layla is depending so much on my grades and they are so bad and I really don't want to disappoint. "
She blurted out.

I sighed.
"Meet me at the library after school today. "
I said reluctantly, I mean I didn't want to tutor but she was being so persistent. A+ for persistence.

I was expecting her to grin or smile or even hug me. I mean I just gave her what she'd been desperate for but instead, she ran away, the potter patter of her footsteps resounding in the hallway.

"What did she want? "
Shelly asked as soon as I came out.

"Nothing. "
I said simply, I didn't need Shelly preying on her.

I couldn't stand it at lunch, I couldn't stand Shelly's endless purring, Mitchie and Jerry's lovey dovey talk and Kira's loud snore. Damn. You'd think she was using a mega phone.
I had a pretty good idea why she didn't sleep, as well as the scratches on her arm but I decided to keep it to myself. Jer would go nuts if he knew link had been screwing his sister.

The loud noises from the cafeteria eventually got too much to so I pushed Shelly away and stormed off.

School was barely over but I couldn't take it anymore. I heard Jerry yelling my name behind me but I ignored him, I got into my car and drove out. I didn't need this shit right now.

I sat, brooding in my room as I waited for dad to come back, so I could hear his decision. I lay on my back, clutching the picture frame tightly in my hand, as if that would stop the decision that was going to be made.

I opened my eyes, slowly taking in my surroundings. I looked out the window and saw the sun already setting, dark clouds taking up the sky in preparation for the night.

I sighed.
I felt groggy and tired. I paused. I'm forgetting someone. I'm forgetting something. I'm forgetting -MITCHIE.

I jumped up with a start, taking the stairs two at a time in a rush to get to the car.
I drove like a maniac, hoping she wasn't waiting in school.
The rain drops started to fall, slowly at first, before increasing pace.

I let out a string of curses under my breath. I jumped out of the car, feeling the heavy rain already soaking my clothes.
I ran to the library, not entirely sure of what I would find but I was relieved when I saw nobody there.
I laughed at myself, I was being ridiculous. Of course she left, probably hours ago. After calling myself stupid a few more times, I left the school premises, already thinking of the muddy print I must have left in school.

Brenda fussed over my wet clothes and much to my irritation, my dad was no where to be found. Damn him.

I would do whatever it takes. Maybe it was time to call on uncle Larry.
I chuckled softly, that would be very entertaining.
