Chapter 12: Pain
It was probably the seventh time I patted my hair down and straightened my skirt. The emptiness of the diner offered no comfort to my restlessness.
I was sipping my coffee at intervals, the caffeine encouraging my nerves to be all over the place. I found my reactions to be quite ridiculous. It was just a small interview, for a part time job, I had gone through much more dire times.
I was waiting for Caleb's cousin to arrive at the small cosy diner not far from my pack. Caleb's pack and mine weren't close and there was a stretch of neutral territory between the two packs where the diner was situated.
I had been only five minutes since I had last seen my phone to check the time, it had to have been half past seven. If not for the time, the sun setting was a clear indication of how late it was. I had arrived early to prep myself up for the supposed interview.
I didn't know how to show that I wanted the job because it was after all, just to keep me busy.
I didn't know why I was nervous, I didn't have anything to lose but I knew the need to impress was making me bite my lips and fiddle with my fingers.
"Here you go." A familiar voice said. I looked up to see the waiter showing the way to a lady. She looked about thirty years old, her face was sided with thick brown curls.
I stood up from my seat and gave her a smile that she returned.
"Hello, I'm Delphi." I introduced myself, sticking my hand out for her to shake.
"Hi, it's great to finally meet you. I'm Sophia." She shook my hand, her hold was firm meeting my intensity.
She seated herself opposite to me.
"What would you both like to order?" The waitress questions looking down at her notepad and scribbling something.
"I'll take a pasta in white sauce with coke." Sophia smiled softly at the waitress and looked at me.
"I'd like a burger and cold coffee please." I pushed the menu towards the waitress after finishing my order. It was my second coffee of the day, and it was actually less compared to my normal consumption.
"Your order will be served in twenty minutes." The waitress said picking up our menus. She soon left seeing that we didn't have any other inquiries.
"So, Delphi. Caleb tells me you are taking online classes. Why is that?" Sophia said genuinely looking at me.
"I do. I didn't like college as much as I thought I would." I answered, truthfully I didn't see the need to tell her the sad tale of my mates rejection.
"I don't have any other questions for you, to be honest. Just that I expect you to report at the library at the alloted time and no unexpected holidays. You can ask me if you need a holiday I'll give it to you, granted you give a proper reason." Her professional voice made me straighten my back even more showing my dedication to what left her mouth.
"Here you go." The waitress placed the plates and glasses filled with our ordered food in front of us and left immediately.
"I'll make sure to maintain strick timings, though I'm not aware of my shifts." I replied keeping my face pleasant.
"Oh right, I'm so sorry. Your shift will be from three to eight on alternate weekdays and on Saturdays four to six. In a month you can take a maximum of four days off. The work isn't difficult. You just need to guide the customers through the shop. Of course, to have precision you need to first learn everything by heart." I nodded my head ever so frequently showing my involvement in the conversation.
"That sounds great." I replied but one question bugged my mind and supposedly, it didn't cross hers at all. What will be my pay? I wasn't in need of money but that was an aspect I wanted to be well aware of. She seemed to be finding it difficult to conduct an official interview.
"What about my salary?" I asked finally, after a couple of minutes of wiping my hands on the napkin.
"Well, you'll be earning month."I nodded my head, agreeing with her as she went on to reveal the numbers.
"Vince is the branch manager, he will show you around and help you out. I'm not usually around the shop. If you have any questions you can ask away." She put down her glass and leaned back.
"When do I start?"
"Tomorrow sound good to you?" She asked.
"Sounds perfect. I'll be there."
The drive back home I kept wondering if a job was really what my life required at that moment but, there was no harm in making a little money.
I dialed Caleb's number as soon as I reached home.
"Hello, Delphi?"
"You sound surprised." I laughed lightly.
"Never mind, how was the interview?" He questioned. It felt good to speak to him, his voice calmed me down for some reason.
"I would hardly call it an interview, more like a meet and greet. But I got the job and sounds pretty good till now. I start tomorrow." I said in one breath.
"Whoa, whoa. Calm down there. That's great, though." He paused. "Are you sure you want this? Don't get pressurised by what Lola or Tiffany say. If you feel that a job isn't the way to go, you can leave it. It is your choice." His sounded concerned.
"I do. I'm not getting pressurised, Caleb. I'm not completely sure about how a job helps, I'll be honest with you. But there is no harm in trying, right?" I replied calmly mentally patting myself on my back at the way my voice held confidence.
"Okay. If you think so-" His voice was cut off by someone demanding to see the Alpha.
"I'm sorry, Delphi. But I have to go. I'll talk to you later." He said and hung up. I frowned at the abruptness of the end.
"Del, where were you? You missed dinner." Scott said coming in through my room door.
"I had informed mom about this. I had an interview." I was still ticked off by the comments he made that day so I let my words be short and informative.
"I'm sorr- wait, an interview?" He must have figured out the coldness in my voice was his fault so he tried to apologise but then he took in my words.
"Yes, I have a job now." I said grinning happily.
"Why do you need a job?" Scott questioned as though that was the most obnoxious thing he has heard all day.
"Because, I just do. Okay?" I shook my head at him.
"Del, is this because of Sylvester?" His question, once again, made my anger boil.
"No, Scott. Not everything in my life revolves around him. I'm doing this for myself, as surprising as you may think that is." I glared at him seeing regret flood his eyes.
"I didn't mea-" He started but I put my hand up motioning for him to stop.
"Just leave, Scott. I think you've said enough." He looked like he wanted to protest but the stern look in my face must have stopped him.
He left without a word and I walked into the bathroom.
Showers were always a place where I let my mind wander. I think, over think, all kinds of situations and seemingly take reasonable decisions too.
Sylvester hadn't contacted me in a while and as happy as I was for that I found it suspicious.
What is wrong with me? Honestly, I could care less if he never called again.
He is our mate, Delphi. Lyra spoke softly. There weren't any conclusions in her voice. She was merely stating a fact.
He is. A defeated whisper left me. I couldn't deny fate. I could whereas continue to deny him and make my wolf realise that if she disconnected herself as I had, things would be so much easier.
The fate chose him. An Alpha with no clear vision. A man with loose morals. A wolf with no respect for a mate. A dream of perfection overflowing with imperfections.
I slammed my hand against the bathroom wall. Why? Why did it have to choose him out of all other people in the world? I would rather not have a mate at all.
Letting a frustrated growl I punched the wall, hearing a crack confirming that I had broken not just my mental state but also a few bones.
The pain settled in and the blood soon joined the game.
But what is agony without pain? And don't you need something to feel.
The pain spread through my body like wild fire and I; embraced every moment of it.
******
Gee, she's getting too dark for me to handle.
Guys! Suggestions are more than welcome. What do you think Delphi should do now?
Also, anyone knows what the pay would be of an employee because I'm slightly confused.
