Chapter 16

POV Jasper

A Shadowhunter...

She'd proudly used the term but no one, other than Carlisle, had ever heard of it and I wasn't sure how to respond.
What exactly could Shadowhunters do and what were their strengths and weaknesses?
So many questions came from just one word and I wanted an answer to every single one of them.

I heard a car brake hard, which Seraphina heard as well since she hurried to the door and down the stairs.
It had to be her brother who wanted to pick her up, but I didn't like the idea of letting her run into the unknown one bit.

Shadowhunter or not, I just couldn't let her go, we didn't even know the danger she was in.
I ran after her in no time, wanting to hold her petite body against mine so she couldn't escape but oddly enough she seemed to overcome my strength and with a little force pushed me back a step.
Since I hadn't expected her strength I almost stumbled backwards but was able to catch myself.

I slid across the floor and looked at her in shock.
How could she just push me away like that?
The others were now with me and had watched the spectacle.
Everyone seemed surprised at their action. The many emotions hit me like a truck, which briefly took my breath away.
"How could you push Jasper back like that?", Edward asked almost tensely and I could clearly sense his insecurity and that of the others.

She seemed amused by the question and a knowing smile graced her pink lips which I had to tear my gaze away from.
"We are able to block your strength so it doesn't affect us", Seraphina explained quickly and ran to Micah, who had now got out and gave her a quick hug.
Instantly jealousy tickled within my fingertips as I saw the two of them so close together. How I would love to hold her in my arms like that.

"What are they doing here? Was your lie too bad again?", Micah whispered to her and gave us a furtive look.
I heard Edward chuckle in amusement behind me and Emmett had to hold back a lot too.
"They can hear you Micah, so don't say anything wrong! Besides, it wasn't that bad", she defended herself and Emmett raised a brow.

My mate was definitely not made for lying, I had to admit that and an almost imperceptible smile graced my lips.  Honesty was very important to me especially because of my past and she didn't seem to like lying at all.
Even if my powers didn't work on her, I could almost clearly read on her face that she felt uncomfortable and that she was ashamed of her lie.

"It doesn't matter, we have to go and I'm not so sure if we'll make it in time", Micah simply continued and gave her some kind of  weapon, "can you feel Aaron's energy?"

She closed her eyes and seemed to comply to Micah's request.
I used the moment to admire her fine features and how her eyelashes gently caressed her skin.
She wore her hair in a ponytail and only a few shorter strands framed her face. I noticed that every hairstyle suited her and continued to stare at her figure.
"His energy is low, but I found it. Further north through the forest", she explained and Micah gave her a tense nod, "then it's not too late."

"What about your friend?", Carlisle asked now and looked at the two questioningly.
He had now also arrived downstairs with Esme after watching the whole spectacle from the door.
"The shadows got him and since he was still battered he couldn't fight it. I could feel it, it's a Shadowhunter thing", Micah tried to explain everything quickly and Carlisle nodded understandingly.
He seemed able to immediately assess the danger of the situation, a gift I greatly admired in him.

"If it's not too late like you say, then we would offer our help. Seraphina is Jasper's soulmate and is now part of our family as well", Carlisle offered and the rest of us immediately agreed.
The way he phrased his sentence sent a pleasant shiver down my spine and momentarily my eyes darkened.
That's right Seraphina is mine!

"Help? How?", Micah asked immediately and looked at me questioningly since he probably didn't know that we were vampires yet.
"We're fast and can bring you to your destination within the blink of an eye", I replied and he seemed to realize what we are. I wondered how they knew about us since we had to guard our secret very closely.
Did the Volturi know about them?

He turned to Seraphina, who didn't seem too happy about our offer, "seriously vampires? How come you're always attracting the supernatural? And what's with this soulmate thing?"
Was he saying that she knew other vampires or was it about other supernatural beings like werewolves?
The thought of her being friends with these mutts made my blood run cold.

The Major immediately made himself known and I understood that he would take care of these dogs personally should they dare to touch Seraphina and I wholeheartedly agreed.

A little confused, I looked at my Seraphina, who was probably having a quiet conversation with her brother before she looked at us again.
"We appreciate your help, but...", I didn't let her get any further when my instinct immediately took over, "I won't let you go alone under any circumstances!"
How could she think that I would just let her go like that?

Shocked, she looked at me briefly with wide eyes but then quickly caught herself again and a slight blush adorned her cheeks, "okay, but you mustn't come too close to a shadow, they have fatal effects on you vampires!"
Satisfied with her reaction, I went next to her and pulled her possessively to my side. Her warm body calmed me down a bit and in this serious situation I couldn't bear not to touch her.

She explained to us that she was able to reach out to others with her energy since she could expand hers. Because of this, she was able to determine exactly where Aaron was.
Her 'power' reminded me a lot of that of a tracker, but it seemed like every Shadowhunter could find shadows and other members. Seraphina only seemed to be able to act more precisely, which probably had something to do with her energy.

Emmett was already walking towards Seraphina, but I immediately gave him a dark growl.
The Major was furious that someone was trying to pull Seraphina away from us when she belonged right here.
Seraphina seemed to have noticed my inner conflict immediately, but I didn't know whether it was because of my slightly darker eyes or my growl. Her warm hand immediately cupped mine and she squeezed once, reassuring.

Defeated and slightly amused, Emmett raised his hands with a grin and said, "just wanted to see if I could get away with this, she's all yours."
I gave him another dark look and then quickly turned back to Seraphina.
Gently I picked her up and she immediately placed her armes around  my neck, almost making me purr again.

Emmett grabbed Micah and we quickly sprinted off, not wanting to lose another second.
With Edward and Rose in tow, we took off and Seraphina pointed out the direction we needed to head.
The closer we got to our destination, the more nervous and insecure I became.  My instincts knew I was putting Seraphina in danger and I wished I could take her back to the safety of my room.

I gently set her back on the ground and reluctantly let her go.
In front of us was an old building that wasn't very big and seemed deserted.
There was an aura of darkness and uncertainty that each and every one of us felt.
If Seraphina felt that dark and unwelcome aura as well, she didn't show it. She confidently stood next to me and surveyed the building as well as her surroundings.

Like an eagle I guarded Seraphina who slowly approached the building with Micah.
It was quiet and apart from the leaves on the ground, all we could hear was the forest around us.
I desperately wanted to follow her, but Edward immediately put a hand on my shoulder and shook his head.
Defeated I had to watch idly as Seraphina entered the danger zone and for the first time in a long time I felt fear, deep fear.

My thoughts drifted to our kiss and how magical it had felt. I had her in my arms and her hands comfortably clawed into my blond curls. She tugged at them lightly and I felt a surge of pleasure run through my cold body.
She was my light, my life and I would do anything to protect her just to feel her pressed against my body again.

Suddenly out of nowhere 3 figures shot out of the building and attacked the siblings.
Tensely I wanted to run to Seraphina to protect her but Emmett now stood cautiously next to me to stop me if the worst came to the worst.
I quickly looked back at Seraphina, who was fighting elegantly and doing a skillful somersault here and there.

My tension eased a bit and we watched spellbound as the two dealt with the shadows with ease.
They vanished into thin air when hit correctly and I had to admit that I was extremely turned on by her elegant fighting style.
She seemed to know exactly what to do to defeat the shadows and didn't even seem desperate.

She pressed her lips together in concentration and furrowed her brows lightly. Her hair danced wildly in the heat of the moment and I couldn't take my eyes off her.

Admiration immediately flowed through my body and my beast joined in too. I was relieved that she wasn't as helpless as I first thought but I still felt uneasy about these shadows.
I'd rather put up with Aaron myself and not see my other half put her life on the line like this.

"Come on, you can go in, I'll cover you!", Micah called out to her, taking care of the next shadows that came towards them.
She ducked quickly and then slid into the abandoned building where neither of us could see her.
I panicked as she disappeared and immediately saw red.

I quickly wanted to run after her to make sure no one hurt her.
"I have to go to her!", I growled frantic as Edward and Emmett tried to hold me back.

The Major took over in an instant and began attacking Edward and Emmett.
I couldn't let Seraphina get hurt or worse. We didn't know how strong the effects of a shadow could be, but since Aaron was trapped and his previous wounds were probably from a fight, I didn't like the whole thing at all.

With all my strength I tried to free myself from the grip of the two vampires to finally run after my mate.
