"And then he told me he wanted a more spontaneous interview." I explained as I turned the page of Forbes, putting my phone between my right ear and my shoulder.
"Babe, I told you it'd work out! Thank me later!"
I was still arguing with myself deep in my brain, not knowing whether I should tell Jenna about the red dress he wanted me to wear.
"And it'll be quite late, though." I commented, wanting to keep this conversation going. Miss Smith still didn't know one thing about the interview that was only one day away. "There must be a snag.."
"Why do you always have to overthink, Shay?"
Maybe because it was not usual to have an interview at this very late evening. Maybe, also, because it was not usual to greet the interviewed one in a super expensive, hot red dress.
Maybe because this wasn't going to be only an interview.
"Shay... Shay? You still there?"
"Uh, yeah, sorry." I shook my deep thoughts out of my head. This would make me mess up the whole interview. "I don't know when to tell Miss Smith, anyways,"
"You don't have to tell her," Jenna said slowly, already knowing this was a bad idea before she said it. "You could surprise her, make a good interview and then act like it was the easiest thing to do!"
"It won't be,"
"Miss Smith doesn't have to know. And no boss wants a employee that finishes their jobs arduously."
And she was right. It was just me who had a bad feeling about this, being the scared one I have always been.
"It shouldn't happen without Miss Smith knowing," I then begged Jenna as if I needed her permission to tell our boss, "It isn't usual to have an interview under these conditions."
"You just have to look good.. Girl, I would do anything to switch our roles!"
"Nice, then explain this to Smith,"
"Nah, that's your job, still. It's your first chance to be someone in this industry."
"To be a journalist," I repeated, "Who uses their charm to get things their way?"
"You are seeing this as a bad thing.. when it really ain't. It's just an interview."
"Whatever you say," I replied as I ended the call, seeing Harry Samuels himself on the screen of my TV. With fast movements, I looked for the remote and changed the volume to full 100 percent.
What a stupid loser.
How did he even become who he is today? Through his way of using people?
Prolly. And that was Miss Smith's plan with me, too.
I shook my head, wanting to throw my phone against the TV as he spoke to the interviewer of some economy show. Everybody, literally, everybody wanted to get a talk with him. And people were ready to kill to do so, but me.
When I wanted to get ready for work I heard my phone ringing, making me stop my way to my beloved shower.
"Hello?" I greeted the person on the other line, accepting the call without even looking who was calling. "Who's there?"
"Good Morning, Shayleen." I heard my bosses voice speaking on the other line, making me wonder why she called. She usually never called me. Except for once, when she needed my opinion on whether a colleague of mine should get dismissed or not. She was one to need a second opinion, but I wasn't one to betray somebody. Especially not my colleague.
"Good Morning, Miss Smith, how a-"
"No playing games with me. Where are you?" Uh, where was I supposed to be other than still at home?
"At home, Miss, what's the matter?"
"You should've been here one hour ago already, guess you haven't taken a look at the new timetable yet, did you?"
She can't just change our timetable, or can she?
"I.. No, I'm sorry, I didn't. It's my mistake."
"Of course it is. Now get yourself together and come here. There's somebody I need to introduce you to."
With these last words, she ended the call while I was standing there in pure shock.
I needed to get ready as fast as a hurricane and take the next train which was about to arrive at my train station...
Oh
in two hours.
How was I supposed to explain this to Miss Smith? I couldn't just act like I was ill now, plus she had somebody she wanted to introduced me to. I wondered who this person could be, and also, if this person would just leave if I didn't arrive right on time.
I looked for Smith's number on my phone, fearing for what was about to become the worst reaction as I looked for suitable clothes.
"Hello?"
"It's me, Shayleen here. I don't think I'll be there as soon," I started, not knowing how else I should explain it, "My next train is taking off in two hours."
"Shayleen," Miss Smith breathed out heavily, "Shayleen, wait." I heard her and some other voices in the background as she told them she was going to leave the room quickly.
"You can't just come here late!"
"I know, Miss, it was my mistake, I am really really so-"
"We will talk this out sometime else. There's somebody potentially waiting for you, I need you here. Right. Now."
"Who is this person waiting for me? I am not supposed to do an interview today, am I?"
"No, but it's John Marbles, a well known businessman these days. He wants to have a talk to you, I guess he kept an eye on you during the event yesterday."
On me?
"Wow, I don-"
"Yes, Shayleen. You do know what to do. It's now your choice whether you take this opportunity or not, or else I will transfer him to Jenna's office where he can finally finish what he is here for."
"Miss.. Miss, I don't know how soon I can be there," I said, thinking she is the one who is stopping me right now, "But this seems to be an important meeting. Can't I meet him at another time?"
"Shayleen, this is not a date that you can switch from one day or another. He is here now and not tomorrow or whenever you'd like him to come!"
I breathed out strong air that I kept in my lungs.
Why didn't she tell me he was visiting me at work today?
I assumed that this was spontaneous, like all the other meetings of businessmen, and decided to not ask Miss Smith. She'd fire me for just asking this. Perhaps, I should've known about this.
When I wanted to say something to her again, I heard her speaking to somebody else on the other line, somebody who I assumed to be Mr. John Marbles.
After some while I heard Miss Smith chuckle before she returned to our call, "Shayleen, I guess it's alright for him if we move this meeting to another time. He said it was alright for him. He expects to meet you this Friday evening."
"But," I went through the selfmade schedule I made up in my head, how was I supposed to tell her about my planned interview with Harry?
"But what?"
"I do have another meeting this Friday." I informed her, not knowing whether I should actually tell her about the interview. She seemed to keep in contact with Harry, though. So why hasn't he confronted her with this already? This wasn't my job, was it?
Actually, it was. But maybe it was THE idea to show Miss Smith that I took this job as serious as if my life depended on it. And I really did, as you could see by me getting tortured through this conversation.
"Then cancel this meeting," She started, "I don't care who you planned what with wherever. This is John Marbles."
I whispred a short Okay, thinking of how I could attend both meetings at the same time.
"Excuse me, what? I haven't heard you."
"Okay." I repeated, wanting to end the call as soon as possible.
"Okay, good. I'll see you at work today though. We still have something to talk about."
She was the first one to end the call, again, making me finally get ready for what hell I was about to expect. She couldn't fire me, right? I was supposed to have a talk with this man called John Marbles, who apparently kept an eye on me during the event.
I got incredibly excited and made sure to look even more decent today as I was really looking forward to meet him, too. Maybe I could arrange both meetings at the same time. Nothing had to be impossible.
