96. He Gets Emotional Talking About You

A/N: THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT BECAUSE IT WILL HELP THE IMAGINE MAKE SENSE: So the reason why this interview is so long in this imagine is because it was Shawn's first time being on The Late Late Show in about eight or so YEARS. ALSO, this imagine makes reference to other imagines that I've written. The imagines that I reference that are in this book are numbers 7, 26, 30, 33, and 82. The one other imagine that is referenced in this one is in my second book of imagines, and it's number 145. Also, let's pretend that Shawn was the only guest on at that moment because, since he hadn't been on in so long, James wanted to focus on him. Anyways, please enjoy this imagine. Okay, without further ado, let's begin!

Shawn's point of view

I took a break from music for about eight years, and now I'm doing promotions for my newest album. I took the break from music so I could focus on my wife, Y/n Mendes, and our three kids. We have Rose Lucille Mendes, who's seven, Jacob Alexander Scott Mendes, who we call Jake, and he's five, and we also have Julia Kennedy Mendes, who's three. Tonight I'm going to be on The Late Late Show with James Corden.

"Please help me welcome back for the first time in over eight years, Shawn Mendes!" James said. I smiled and walked out to the chair.

"Hey how are you?" I asked James as I gave him a bro hug.

"I'm good, how are you?" He asked as I sat down.

"I'm good." I said.

"So the last time you were on the show, you were dating Y/n Y/l/n, and now you're married to Y/n Mendes and you guys have three kids together. What's it like to be a husband and a father?" James asked. I smiled at the thought of my family.

"It's absolutely amazing. I know that some fans probably didn't like me taking a break from music, but I needed to focus on my wife and my kids." I said.

"I was at your wedding, which was beautiful by the way." James said. I smiled as I played with my wedding band.

"Thank you. Y/n and I always say that our whole wedding day was so magical." I said.

"Well I'm curious, how much input did you have for the wedding?" James asked.

"The only thing that I didn't have input on was Y/n's wedding dress - and my tie! Y/n surprised me by picking out my tie. Well, let me reword that: I knew that she was going to pick out my tie, I just had no clue what the tie was going to look like and she also got me a tie clip with our wedding date engraved on it." I said.

"Do you consider your wife your best friend?" James asked. I nodded.

"Of course, absolutely. There's no one that knows me better than she does and there's no one that knows her better than I do. We've seen each other at our weakest moments and at our most vulnerable moments, and her and I have said that those moments just make us love each other even more." I said.

"How long have you and Y/n been together for now?" James asked. I smiled.

"Well, we've been married for about eight years, but we've been together for twelve years." I said. The crowd cheered and so did James.

"That's like a hundred years in Hollywood years." James said. I chuckled.

"I remember one time, before Y/n and I were even living together, she looks at me and goes 'Shawn, what if we end up like those other famous couples and split up?' and I promised her that it would never happen, and I've kept that promise." I said.

"When did you know that Y/n was the one? Like when did you know that she was going to be the one that you would marry?" James asked.

"The moment, um, excuse me." I said as I got emotional. I cleared my throat, trying to get the tears to go away.

"Are you okay?" James asked. I nodded as I held back tears.

"Yeah. Um, the moment that I laid eyes on her. I remember thinking 'She's the one, I don't want anyone else, I just want her.' Sorry that I'm getting emotional, it's just... I'm married to my best friend and we have three beautiful kids together. I always tell Y/n, and anyone and everyone, that I'm the luckiest man alive." I said with a smile. James nodded.

"That's beautiful. Now, you have a song called Roses, did you and Y/n really like that song and that's why your oldest daughter's name is Rose?" James asked. I chuckled and shook my head.

"No. A lot of people think that, and when Y/n and I picked out her name, we knew that people would think that but no. Rose is named after my wife's great great Aunt Rose who lived to be 102 years old -" I started.

"ONE HUNDRED AND TWO YEARS OLD?" James basically yelled, his eyes wide. I laughed and nodded.

"Yup, she was 102 when she passed away. Y/n told me that her Aunt Rose was basically the definition of style and class and elegance and grace, and so we're hoping that since our Rose is named after her, maybe our Rose will live to be 102 and be like her three times great Aunt Rose." I said.

"Wow. Well it's a beautiful name. Now, what are the stories behind Jake's name and Julia's name?" James asked.

"So, basically, when Y/n and I were first talking about our future together, it was after we had said I love you to each other for the first time, and Y/n said all of the names, she came up with all of the names, I just said yes to them because I loved them." I said.

"Really?" James asked. I nodded.

"Yeah. So Jake's full name is Jacob Alexander Scott Mendes. The Jacob part is in memory of Y/n's former neighbor, Jake, and our Jake and the original Jake, as we call him, share a birthday." I said.

"Really? Your son has the same birthday as his namesake?" James asked. I nodded.

"Yup. And then Alexander is in memory of one of Y/n's uncles and Scott is in memory of another one of Y/n's uncles. Julia isn't really named after anyone. Oh, by the way, Rose is Rose Lucille Mendes, and Lucille is Y/n's great grandmother who was basically a saint. The worst word she ever said was damn and she was just a really nice and sweet woman who didn't speak badly about anyone." I said.

"Really?" James asked. I nodded.

"Yup. Julia isn't really named after anyone, we just like the name Julia. However, her middle name is Kennedy. Now, my wife was born and raised in Massachusetts, where President Kennedy and the whole Kennedy family is from." I said.

"Wait, so did you guys name your daughter after a president?" James asked with a smile.

"Yes. Well, not just President Kennedy, but all of the Kennedys. James, when we found out that we were pregnant with a girl again, and when we figured out that we were going to name her Julia Kennedy Mendes, I said to Y/n 'Please, I know you love the Kennedys, just don't take our daughter to the Kennedy Library and Museum every single weekend or something.' and she must have been thinking about actually doing that because her shoulders slumped a little and she goes 'Okay.'" I said. James laughed.

"So has Y/n ever read books about the Kennedys?" James asked.

"She's read over fifty books about them. You don't understand, when I asked her to be my girlfriend, a poster of President Kennedy that was at the end of Y/n's bed was smiling at me." I said. James laughed.

"Wait, so you were on Y/n's bed when you asked her to be your girlfriend?" He asked. I could feel my face turning red.

"Well, we were just sitting on her bed. When I asked her to be my girlfriend, I had just randomly shown up at her front door with a bouquet of pink tulips because I had remembered that they were her favorite flower, and she wasn't home yet, so her brother answered the door. Then, when she got home, she gave me a hug and we went in her room - the door was kept open - and then I asked her to be my girlfriend and she said yes. And then I asked her if I could kiss her and she said yes, so we did." I said.

"Wait, didn't you once say that you guys had your first kiss in Boston? And I thought that you once told me that Y/n grew up in the suburbs. Did you and Y/n kiss before you guys had started dating?" James asked. I blushed again and smiled as I nodded.

"Yeah, so we actually had our first kiss on our second date. We had gone to a park in Boston and we were sitting on the bench. I remember, I told her that her lips are beautiful, and she said that my lips are beautiful, and I believe my exact words to her were 'Do you think that our lips should meet up and get to know each other?'" I said. James was cracking up laughing.

"Oh my gosh, did you really say that?" James asked. I nodded.

"Yes." I said.

"So that lead to your first kiss with the woman that you're now married to?" He asked.

"It almost didn't lead to a kiss." I admitted.

"Wait, what?" James asked. I chuckled.

"So, I had said that about our lips getting to know each other, and she had been smiling, and then she kind of stopped smiling and shrugged and said that she didn't know. I asked her what she meant, and just a little bit before, she had told me about how crappy her ex was to her. I remember, she was like 'I just don't want to get hurt again.' and I promised her that I wouldn't hurt her, and her exact words to me were 'Don't make a promise you may not be able to keep Shawn.' and it was like I could just feel my heart break when she said that. Not because I didn't think that she was going to kiss me, but because I could tell that her ex had really hurt her." I said.

"So what got you guys to finally kiss?" James asked. I smiled.

"Well, I told her, and I continued to tell her this while we were dating and engaged, that she should set the pace, and I'll just keep up. She asked if she could lean on me and I said yes and then we were just kind of sitting there in a comfortable silence for a little bit. Then, she looked at me and asked if I would kiss her and I asked her if she was sure, and she said yes, and then we kissed for the first time." I said with a smile. The crowd cheered.

"So how did you propose to your wife?" James asked.

"I actually took her back to that same bench that we were sitting at when we had our first kiss, and I brought along my tour photographer, Josiah Van Dien, and my manager, Andrew Gertler. We've never posted the video or shared it with the world, but Andrew videotaped me proposing to her, and my speech, and it's really nice to have that because Y/n and I will sometimes go back and watch the video and remember my speech to her when I asked her to marry me, and obviously she said yes which made me very happy." I said. The crowd cheered again.

"Were you nervous to propose?" James asked.

"A little bit, but not really. Y/n and I had talked about marriage tons of times before we got engaged, and she had promised me that when I asked her to marry me, she would say yes. Knowing that she would say yes kept me mostly calm but there was a little part of me that was worried that she said no, but when she saw that I was down on one knee, she started crying and then when I asked her 'Will you marry me?' she said 'Yes! Of course yes Shawn! Of course I'll marry you!' and it was just absolutely wonderful." I said.

"Do you want to know what I'm thinking?" James asked.

"I'm slightly afraid, but go ahead." I said with a chuckle. The crowd laughed.

"So you guys were in front of a bench when you guys got engaged, right?" James asked. I nodded.

"Yeah." I said.

"And that's where you guys had your first kiss?" He asked. I nodded.

"Yeah." I said.

"There should be a plaque there, on the bench saying something like 'This is where Y/n and Shawn Mendes had their first kiss on, whatever date, and got engaged on, whatever date.'" James said. I chuckled.

"Well, first of all, we had our first kiss there on August seventeenth, 2019, and we got engaged there on May twenty second, 2022, and second of all, there's already a plaque at that bench." I said.

"Does that plaque have to do with you and your wife?" James asked. I smiled and shook my head.

"No. So, remember how I had said that our son's middle name is Scott in memory of Y/n's uncle?" I asked. James nodded.

"Yeah." He said.

"The bench that we had our first kiss at and that we got engaged at is dedicated to Y/n's Uncle Scott, so there's already a plaque there. I was actually the first person that wasn't a family member that she had taken to her uncle's bench, and when we met, it had been ten years since her uncle had passed away." I said. James nodded.

"Oh, okay. So I'm guessing that you guys won't add a plaque that says something like what I suggested?" James asked. I chuckled and shook my head.

"No. A friend of ours actually suggested the same thing, and Y/n was firm and said 'No, there's not going to be a plaque added. That's my uncle's bench, we just had big life events there, but it's his bench.' and so that was the end of that." I said.

"So, let's talk about your kids." James said.

"I love this already." I said. The crowd laughed.

"So, who do your kids look like more, you, or your wife?" James asked.

"Besides her nose, Rose is a spitting image of Y/n. She kind of acts like Y/n too, and I love it. I'll sometimes call her 'Mini Y/n' which always makes her laugh. Jake looks just like me, and Julia is a mix of the both of us. Julia has my hair, but my wife's eyes." I said.

"Do you think that your kids fully understand what you do for a living? Like, did they understand why you had to fly to Los Angeles and be on my show?" James asked.

"Well, first of all, Y/n likes to show the kids the clips from when I was on here for a week, and Jake and Julia can't quite say uncle yet, so the kids call you 'Unky James.'" I said.

"Oh my gosh that's so cute." James said. I smiled and nodded.

"It's adorable. So, when I told them that I was going to be on the show, the way I explained it was that I said 'I have to go see Unky James so he can ask me things.' and they were like 'Okay' and then went to play with their toys. Um, I think that the kids kind of know what I do for a living, they kind of understand that I had to go to the studio so I could make an album and they kind of understand why I have to go on tour, but I don't think that they fully understand it. When Y/n and I told them that I would have to be leaving for tour, they started crying and they hugged me and said 'Daddy don't leave' which just about killed me. But I think that as they get older they'll understand it more." I said.

"Is there any part of you that's worried, like, you've been there to help your wife with the kids, and now you won't be able to help her since you'll be on tour. Is there any part of you that's worried about your wife handling three kids by herself?" James asked. I shook my head.

"Not at all. Her and I were just talking about this the other day and she was like 'Do you really think that I can take care of three small kids by myself?' and told her that if I didn't think she could do it, I wouldn't be going on tour, but I trust her completely and I know that she can do it. Plus, she won't really be doing it by herself. My mother in law lives about five minutes away from us, and we have a lot of great family members and great friends nearby that have said that they'll help. But no, I'm not worried at all, and she knows that if there's a problem, to call me." I said.

"I had Camila Cabello on the show soon after your daughter Julia was born, and she was saying that she's Julia's godmother and she kind of eluded to the fact that something had happened with Y/n after Julia was born but she didn't say what it was. Do you remember what it was?" James asked. I thought for a moment.

"Oh, yeah, I remember. Um, so, shortly after Y/n gave birth to Julia, I could kind of tell that something was wrong but I couldn't put my finger on it, so I didn't say anything. But then the next day, my wife just seemed really, really sad, and I asked her what was wrong. I'll never forget that she started to cry and she told me all these different things that she was feeling, so I went and got the doctor, and the doctor asked Y/n what was going on, and Y/n told the doctor, and the nurse, what she had just told me. The doctor and nurse started talking quietly to each other and then the doctor said that Y/n had postpartum depression, and so she struggled with that for a bit, but she got better." I said.

"As her husband, how concerned were you about her when this happened?" James asked. I sighed.

"Very. I remember asking the doctor and nurse what I could do, as her husband, to help her, and they basically just told me to be there for her. When we got home, we had family members helping us with the kids, and sometimes Y/n and I would just go for a walk, whether it was walking around our backyard or up and down the street that we live on. When we went for the walks, we would either just be walking in a comfortable silence or I would try to get her to talk about how she was feeling, or we would talk about the kids, or our wedding day, or our honeymoon, or anything that had to do with our relationship." I said.

"Do you and Y/n think that you guys will have any more kids?" James asked. I shook my head.

"No, and that's for two reasons. One of the reasons is that, when Y/n and I first started to talk about our future together and we were talking about kids, I had said that I wanted three or four kids, and Y/n was like 'I think that three is a good number. Keep in mind that you're not the one that has to push them out of your private parts.'" I said, making the crowd, and James, laugh.

"Did she really say that?" James asked. I nodded.

"Yeah. So that was one reason why we only have three kids. The reason is my wife's health. When Y/n was younger, she would get a lot of urinary tract infections, and that caused her to get a scar on her kidney. Because of the scar on her kidney, that automatically makes it so anytime that she gets pregnant, it's a high risk pregnancy, which means that we had to be extra careful and extra gentle. Like, when she was pregnant, I would help her sit down and I would help her with even the smallest things and tasks, and we were worried about random people touching her belly and things like that, so for those two reasons, we're all set for kids." I said.

"I remember that when Rose was on the way, and when Julia was on the way, you had tweeted that Y/n was in labor, but you didn't do that for Jake. Why is that?" James asked.

"So, for Jake, we were a bit more rushed, and a lot more panicked and nervous. The doctor had come in and checked on him and said that his heart rate had dropped so we needed to do an emergency c-section and that it wasn't an option, we needed to do an emergency c-section. I was more scared and nervous than I was letting on, but I knew that if I showed just how scared I was, it would only make Y/n more anxious and scared and I didn't want that. But Jake is five now and he's healthy so that's great." I said.

"So you and your wife have been together for twelve years, so I don't know if you'll remember it, but what was the first gift that she ever gave you?" James asked. I smiled.

"It was a small, square, Harry Potter themed pillow, and I actually still have it." I said.

"I'm sure that you and your wife have given each other a lot of gifts in the past twelve years, but what was the best gift that your wife ever gave you?" James asked. Tears formed in my eyes.

"I can feel the tears again, um, wow." I said.

"Is that because of what the answer is?" James asked. I nodded and cleared my throat.

"Yeah. Um, the best gift that my wife ever gave me was being a father. I had always dreamed of being a father, and then my amazing wife gave me three beautiful children, so that was pretty great of her." I said with a smile.

"Did you enjoy the break that you took from music?" James asked. I nodded.

"Definitely. And by the way, that was an extremely hard decision to make, and it was very hard to announce, but I knew that I had to do it. I didn't want to get a phone call from Y/n while I was on tour and hear her say that one of our kids just took their first steps or something like that. I wanted to be there when they had their first milestones, and because I took the break from music, that was able to happen. Rose was sitting on my lap when she said her first word - which was Dada by the way - and it was great. I got to spend a lot of time with my wife and kids and I loved it. I'm going to miss it." I said.

"Well, I'm sure that you want to continue to talk about your wife and your kids, and as much as we love hearing about them, let's move on to your music." James said.

"Aww man. I love talking about my family." I said. James and the crowd laughed but then we moved on to my music. I'm the luckiest man alive to have such an amazing wife and such amazing kids.
