82. High Risk Pregnancy
A/n: Okay so I switched doctors and my mom told my doctor about stuff from when I was little, and I don't remember this because I was young when the doctor told us this, but when I get pregnant, it would be a high risk pregnancy. Of course, this spawned ideas for an imagine, so here we go! Also, this one is a bit personalized, but please go along with it lol. Anyways, please enjoy this imagine. Okay, without further ado, let's begin!
Yesterday, I told my husband, the singer and songwriter Shawn Mendes, that I'm pregnant. This baby will be our first baby. I opened my eyes and Shawn wasn't in bed with me. I then remembered something that I had been told by a doctor when I was younger, and I became nervous. I got out of bed and went downstairs. Shawn was in the kitchen, making waffles.
"Good morning handsome." I said. Shawn smiled at me.
"Good morning my gorgeous wife who's pregnant with my baby. Come here my love." Shawn said as he opened his arms up. I smiled at him and walked over to him. I buried my face in his side and then looked up at him.
"Um, there's something that I somehow completely forgot about and now I'm nervous." I said. Shawn frowned.
"It's just me darling, you don't have to be nervous. What's up babe?" He asked. I sighed.
"Do you remember me telling you that when I was younger I would get urinary tract infections all of the time?" I asked. Shawn nodded.
"Yeah." He said.
"And do you remember the fact that because I would get those infections all of the time, I have a scar on my kidney?" I asked. Shawn nodded his head again.
"Yeah." He said.
"Um, so I just remembered this, but because of the fact that I have a scar on my kidney, that automatically makes any pregnancy of mine a high risk pregnancy." I said. Shawn nodded slowly, like he was processing what I had just said.
"So what does this mean?" He asked as he finished making the waffles.
"I'm not a hundred percent sure to be honest, but I know that it means that we have to be extra careful and extra gentle." I said. Shawn nodded.
"Okay. We can do that. Yeah, we can do that." Shawn said. I could tell that he was acting like he wasn't nervous, but I could tell by the look in his eyes that he was nervous.
"I know that we're supposed to wait until we're about three months pregnant before we start telling anyone, but, um, would it be okay if we had my mom come over today and we could tell her? I'm just... I'm nervous and I've obviously never been pregnant before, so I don't know what to do or where to go or who to see or anything. Would you mind if I invited my mom over so we can talk to her?" I asked as I played with my wedding ring.
"That's fine my love. Why don't you give her a call now and ask her if she wants to come over now?" Shawn asked. I nodded.
"Okay, I'll be right back." I said.
"Okay." Shawn said. I stepped out of the room, sat down on the couch in the family room, and called my mom. She answered almost right away.
"Hi honey, how are you?" She asked. Nervous. Scared. I don't know what to do.
"I'm good. Um, Shawn and I wanted to know if you want to come over today?" I asked my mom.
"Sure, is everything okay?" She asked. I didn't want to lie.
"We'll tell you more about what's going on when you get here." I said.
"Okay, do you mind if I head over now?" She asked.
"That's fine." I said.
"Okay, I'll see you guys in a little bit." She said.
"Okay, bye." I said.
"Bye." She said, and we hung up. I went back into the kitchen.
"Since you're pregnant, are you able to have coffee?" Shawn asked.
"Um, I don't know. I don't think so." I said. Shawn nodded.
"Okay. Is your mom on her way right now?" Shawn asked. I could tell that he was nervous. I went up to him and put my hand on his cheek. He looked at me, and I could see the worry in his eyes.
"Yeah, she is. Everything will be okay honey. Boston is known to have really good hospitals, so we'll be taken care of, okay?" I asked. He nodded and then rested his forehead against mine. I watched as his eyes fluttered shut.
"I just want you, and our baby, to be okay and healthy." He said with a sigh. I wrapped my arms around his shoulders and tangled my fingers in his hair.
"I know baby, I want that too, and we'll get that." I said. Shawn pulled his head away and nodded.
"Okay. The waffles are ready." He said. I nodded.
"Shawn?" I asked. He looked at me.
"Yes love?" He asked.
"I feel so nervous that I don't want to eat right now. Maybe after we talk to my mom I'll feel better." I said. Shawn nodded.
"Okay darling, as long as you get something in your belly at some point we're good." He said. I nodded.
"Okay." I said. We sat down and the doorbell soon rang.
"I got it." Shawn said and I nodded.
"Hey!" My mom said.
"Hi, how are you?" Shawn asked.
"I'm good, how are you?" She asked as they walked into the kitchen. I stood up and gave my mom a hug.
"We're good. Why don't we all sit in the living room?" I asked. Shawn and my mom nodded.
"So what's going on?" My mom asked. Shawn and I smiled at each other and then at my mom.
"So, we just found out yesterday, that we're pregnant!" I said. My mom started to cry and hugged us.
"Congratulations!" She said.
"Thank you. Um, we have some questions." I said. She nodded and wiped some of her happy tears away.
"Sure, what's up?" She asked.
"Well, we're very excited to be pregnant, but we're also nervous. I know that because of the scar on my kidney that automatically makes this a high risk pregnancy. I just... I don't know what to do or where to go or who to see." I said. My mom nodded.
"Well, the doctors in Boston are very good. Just be extra careful and extra gentle. Do you guys want me to help you look for a good doctor or anything?" My mom asked. I looked at Shawn and he nodded.
"Sure." He said. I looked at my mom and nodded.
"Yeah. Mom, I'm scared. So because it's a high risk pregnancy, do I have to be resting all of the time?" I asked. She shrugged.
"I don't know. Probably not all of the time but sometimes." She said.
"Should I just make an appointment with my primary care physician and then she can recommend where to go from there?" I asked. My mom thought for a moment before nodding.
"Yeah, that sounds good." She said. I nodded.
"Okay." I said.
"So did you guys find out together, or did you find out and then tell Shawn?" My mom asked. I smiled at Shawn, who was smiling at me, and then I looked at my mom. (A/n: This next part is in reference to the second imagine in this book!)
"He had gone out to hang out with his friends, and I went to the store and got some pregnancy tests, and then came home and they were all positive. Then, I went to Barnes and Noble and I got some books that are for babies, and I don't think that it registered at first what I was trying to tell you." I said as I looked at Shawn. He shook his head.
"No, I didn't realize what you were trying to tell me until I pulled out Jimmy Fallon's book Your Baby's First Word Will Be DADA." Shawn said. I nodded.
"Yup, and he cried when I showed him the pregnancy tests. Do you want to see the pregnancy tests mom?" I asked. She nodded.
"Yes! Definitely!" She said. I was about to stand up when Shawn stopped me.
"You stay right there honey, I'll go get them, I saw where you put them. You just relax, okay?" Shawn asked. I nodded.
"Okay. I love you." I said. Shawn smiled at me.
"I love you too darling." He said before going upstairs. I smiled at my mom.
"He's going to be such a good Daddy. I could tell that he was nervous when I said the thing about it being a high risk pregnancy, but we'll be okay." I said. She nodded.
"Yeah." She said. Shawn came back in the room.
"There's the sticks that I peed on." I said with a laugh. They were in a ziplock bag and more tears formed in my mom's eyes as she held the bag. Shawn sat down next to me.
"Is there a gender that you guys are hoping for?" My mom asked as she set the bag down on the coffee table. I nodded.
"We're hoping that we have a girl, but we'll be happy with any gender." I said. My mom nodded. Soon, we made an appointment to see my primary care doctor, and of course Shawn came with me. Shawn, my mom and I, were the only ones who knew about the pregnancy.
"Hi Mrs. Mendes, what brings you in today?" Dr. A asked.
"I took three pregnancy tests and they all came back positive. Shawn and I just want to make sure that I really am pregnant." I said. She nodded.
"Okay, well I can refer you to one of the OB-GYN's here." My doctor said. I nodded.
"Yes please." I said. We soon had an appointment with Dr. Ackles. I held Shawn's hand as she did an ultrasound.
"Do you guys see that little thing right there?" She asked. Shawn and I nodded.
"Yeah." We said.
"It's too early to tell the gender, but that's your baby." She said. Tears formed in my eyes as I looked at Shawn, who also had tears in his eyes. I then looked at Dr. Ackles.
"So we're really pregnant?" I asked. She nodded.
"Yup." She said.
"Oh my gosh. Wow. Um, I have a scar on my kidney, and so I was told that that means that when I get pregnant, it would be a high risk pregnancy." I said. She nodded.
"Yes, this is definitely a high risk pregnancy." She said. I nodded.
"Okay, so is there anything specific that we should or should not do?" I asked Dr. Ackles. She nodded.
"Yes. Be extra gentle and extra careful. We'll want you to come in more often than pregnant women who aren't high risk so we can keep an eye on how the baby is developing and things like that. When you go into labor, an at home birth is out of the question. We would want you to deliver the baby in a hospital so we can monitor things." Dr. Ackles said. She then told us more things, like the fact that I'm a little over a month along in the pregnancy, and then Shawn and I left and went home.
"Should we wait until the first trimester of the pregnancy is over before we tell anyone else?" I asked Shawn as we cuddled in bed. He nodded.
"Yeah. Can I have a kiss darling?" Shawn asked. I nodded and he put his lips on mine. I felt sparks shoot through my body like fireworks, I felt my heart race as if I had just run a marathon, and I felt butterflies erupt and fly around in my tummy. Shawn soon pulled away and we smiled at each other.
"I'm carrying your baby in my belly." I said. Shawn's smile widened.
"I know, and that makes me extremely happy." He said. I smiled. When I was three months pregnant, Shawn and I found out that we were expecting a girl.
"We should probably tell people now." I said when we got home. Shawn nodded.
"Yeah. Your mom already knows, so we should probably tell your dad and your brother and then we can Facetime my family and tell them." Shawn said. I nodded as he rubbed my belly.
"Yeah." I said.
"And then after we tell our families, we can tell our friends, and then we can announce it to the world." Shawn said. I suddenly became nervous and nodded.
"Y-yeah." I said.
"You okay baby?" Shawn asked. I leaned on him more.
"Shawn... I get hate from some of your fans. How are they going to react when they find out that I'm pregnant with your baby?" I asked.
"Honey look at me." Shawn said. I did and he was frowning.
"Are you mad at me?" I asked. He shook his head as he moved his hand from my belly to my cheek.
"No honey, not at all. It's just that, well, we shouldn't care what other people think about you being pregnant with my baby. We're happy and that's all that matters, okay my sweet girl?" Shawn asked. I nodded.
"Okay. Can we tell people tomorrow? I'm tired." I said. Shawn nodded.
"Of course honey. We'll tell our family and friends tomorrow and then we'll announce it to the world the day after that, okay?" Shawn asked. I nodded.
"Okay. I love you." I said.
"I love you too honey." Shawn said, and then we fell asleep.
The next day, we told our families and friends. Everyone was so beyond ecstatic for us, and we also explained to them that it's a high risk pregnancy, what that means, and they understood. The day after we told our family and friends, I was about to sit down next to Shawn when he shook his head.
"What?" I asked. He stood up.
"Let me help you sit down darling." He said. I smiled and he helped me sit down before he sat down.
"You're the sweetest." I said. He smiled at me and kissed my cheek.
"Nope, that's you babe. Should we announce our pregnancy to the world now?" He asked. I nodded.
"Yeah." I said. He posted a picture of him standing behind me with his hands on my growing belly. My hands were on top of his as I smiled at the camera, and he kissed the side of my head as he closed his eyes. My brother had taken a few pictures of us yesterday when we told him that we're pregnant. I read the caption.
"My amazing wife and I are so beyond proud, happy, and ecstatic to announce that our little girl will be arriving this February! Six more months until our little one is here and Y/n and I can't wait! Photo credit to my brother in law!" He wrote. I posted the picture of Shawn on his knees, kissing my belly, as I smiled at him. My brother had also taken that picture.
"Shawn and I are happy beyond words to announce that in six months our little girl will be here! Baby girl Mendes, Mommy and Daddy already love you so, so, SO much and we can't wait to meet you. Photo credit to my brother!" I wrote. Shawn smiled at me and gave me a kiss.
"I was thinking, and we totally don't have to if you don't want to, but maybe we should do a live stream on Instagram. I just think that fans are going to want to touch your belly when they see that you have a bump, and we don't want that, so maybe we can explain in the live stream that this is a high risk pregnancy and to not touch your belly. What do you think?" Shawn asked. I nodded.
"Okay." I said. He smiled, gave me another kiss, and then set up his phone so he wouldn't have to hold it, and started a live stream. He put one of his hands on my back and smiled at his phone.
"Hi guys, so in case you didn't see my post or my wife's post, we're very, very, happy to say that we'll be expecting a baby girl in six months! Of course we're excited, but we're also a little nervous. I think that all first time parents are nervous, but we might be a little bit more nervous than some other people. Do you want to explain why that is Mrs. Mendes?" Shawn asked. I nodded.
"Yeah. So, when I was younger, I would get Urinary Tract Infections a lot. Like, to the point that I now have a scar on my kidney. Due to the scar on my kidney, that automatically means that whenever I get pregnant, it's going to be a high risk pregnancy, which is why Shawn and I are a bit extra nervous. Since it's a high risk pregnancy, that means going to the doctors more often than usual so they check our baby girl's development and things like that." I said.
"I remember the day after we found out that we had gotten pregnant, and you had just remembered the high risk pregnancy thing, and I was totally pretending and acting like I wasn't nervous because I didn't want you to worry." Shawn said. I smiled at him.
"My love, we've been married for over a year and I've known you for almost six years, I knew that you were nervous." I said.
"How?" Shawn asked.
"I could tell just by your eyes. You're my husband and I know how to read you and how you're feeling and when." I said. Shawn nodded.
"Okay then. I obviously knew that my wife knows me better than anyone, but I didn't know that she could tell how I was feeling just by the look in my eyes. Oh! Jimmy Fallon is watching and he just wrote congratulations! Jimmy, we have something to tell you." Shawn said.
"Oh yeah." I said with a smile.
"So, the way that Y/n told me that she's pregnant involves you Jimmy." Shawn said. I laughed.
"It does." I said and Shawn rubbed my back and my smile widened when he kissed my cheek.
"Mind if I tell that story babe?" Shawn asked. I shook my head.
"That's fine honey." I said. Shawn looked at his phone.
"So, I had gone out to a friends house that day, and then I got a text from Y/n saying that she had gone out. I went home and she still wasn't home. When she got home, she had three bags from Barnes and Noble and I asked her what she had gotten. She told me that she would be right back and then she went upstairs to get something, which ended up being the pregnancy sticks." Shawn said.
"Well I wanted to grab them to show you that they were positive." I said. Shawn kissed my cheek and then looked at his phone again.
"So then she showed me the books that she had gotten, and they were all books that you can read to babies or toddlers, and I remember thinking 'Oh, she got these for when she gets pregnant' but then I pulled out Jimmy Fallon's book, Your Baby's First Word Will Be DADA and that's when I realized that Y/n had become pregnant and so I asked her, and she showed me the pregnancy tests." Shawn said as he rubbed my back.
"You looked at me and your eyes were so wide, and you were like 'Is there, are you, is there, are you pregnant?' and that was when I showed you the pregnancy sticks and told you that you're going to be a Daddy." I said.
"Yeah and I started crying happy tears." Shawn said. I nodded.
"Yup. I can't wait until she's here." I said. Shawn smiled and nodded.
"I know honey, I can't wait either. Six more months. Oh, and to my fans, we love you so much, we do. Without you guys, I wouldn't be the singer that I am today, and if I wasn't the singer that I am today, I never would have been on tour in Boston when I met the woman that I'm now married to, but if you guys see Y/n, please don't come up to her and start touching her baby bump." Shawn said. I nodded.
"Yeah, we just... I don't know how to explain it and I feel bad." I said to Shawn. He shook his head.
"Don't feel bad. The thing is, not only do we have to be extra gentle and extra careful since this is a high risk pregnancy, but also, obviously the baby is in my wife's belly and her belly is part of her body, so please, please, please, don't come up to her and start touching her belly. It's a comfort level thing and we just want to be careful." Shawn said. I nodded.
"Yeah. The only people who don't have to ask to touch my belly are Shawn - obviously - my mom, his mum, Aaliyah, and my best friend Grace. Anyone else, even if it's my brother or a relative, has to ask. Like Shawn said, it's a comfort level thing and we want to be careful." I said.
"Yeah. Okay, well I'm going to go spend some time with my wife and our little girl that's growing in her belly. We love you guys. Bye!" Shawn said. I waved and then he ended the live stream.
"I can't wait until she's here." I said. Shawn nodded.
"I know honey. I love you." He said.
"I love you too." I said. Six months later, our healthy baby girl, Rose Lucille Mendes, was born.
