75. Engagement Party

Last night, my best friend, and the love of my life, Shawn Mendes, proposed to me after we had been dating for two and a half years. I love Shawn, so of course I said yes. I woke up in the morning, Shawn's arms wrapped around me as he slept. I looked at my hand, and sure enough, there was the beautiful engagement ring. Shawn was shirtless, and I rubbed the ring on his bicep gently, hoping not to wake him up, but of course I accidentally did. Shawn smiled at me.

"Good morning darling." He said as he gently pulled me closer to him.

"Good morning baby. Can you believe it? We're engaged." I asked and said. His smile widened and he rubbed my back.

"I know. We're going to get married darling." He said.

"I love you." I said.

"I love you too honey." He said.

"So, I was thinking, and maybe we could have a spring wedding? Not this coming spring, but the next one. We should probably hold off on really planning a lot until tour is over so we can be together when we're planning things. Does that sound okay?" I asked. He nodded.

"That sounds perfect baby. I think that you said that you want to walk down the aisle to the instrumental part of A Thousand Years by Christina Perri, right?" He asked. I nodded.

"Yeah." I said.

"Okay. So, maybe we could do the spring of 2024?" He asked. I sat up and nodded as I grabbed my phone.

"Yeah. What about May? Does May sound good?" I asked as I checked the calendar on my phone for May of 2024. Shawn scooted closer to me and put his arm around me before kissing the side of my head.

"May sounds perfect babe." He said. I smiled.

"So what about an exact date? Should we do it on a weekend?" I asked as I looked up at him. He thought for a moment and then nodded.

"Yeah. I feel like more people would be able to come if it was on a weekend." Shawn said. I nodded and then looked at the calendar.

"Okay. What about May 25th? It's on a Saturday." I asked and said. Shawn kissed the side of my head and I looked up at him. He was smiling at me.

"That sounds perfect baby. So we'll get married May twenty fifth, 2024?" Shawn asked. I smiled and nodded.

"Yeah. Oh my gosh Shawn we just set a date for our wedding!" I said. Shawn held me close to him.

"I know. Oh my gosh I'm so happy right now babe." He said.

"Me too." I said. Shawn put his lips on mine. I felt my heart race as if I had just run a marathon, I felt butterflies erupt and fly around in my tummy, and I felt sparks shoot through my body like fireworks. We pulled away and smiled at each other.

"I feel like we should get married in Boston." He said. I nodded.

"Yeah. We have a lot of special memories in Boston." I said. Shawn rested his forehead against mine.

"Yup. We met in Boston, had our first and second dates in Boston, had our first kiss in Boston, and got engaged in Boston. Do you think that we should invite people that have interviewed me to the wedding?" Shawn asked. I pulled my head away from his and smiled.

"Jimmy Fallon!" I said. Shawn laughed and nodded.

"Okay baby girl. We'll invite Jimmy." He said.

"What about James Corden?" I asked. Shawn nodded.

"Yeah, we can invite him too. Where should we get married honey? Do you know of any places?" Shawn asked. I thought for a moment.

"Well we could get married at the State Room in Boston. I think that we can have both the ceremony and the reception there. Do you think that we should make our guest list and figure out how many people are coming or at least invited, and then we can pick where we want to get married?" I asked. Shawn nodded.

"Yeah, that sounds good to me." Shawn said.

"Should we start cleaning the house before our guests arrive?" I asked. Shawn nodded.

"Yeah." He said.

"I love you." I said as I got out of bed.

"I love you too honey. Come here." Shawn said as he got out of bed. I walked over to him and wrapped my arms around his waist as he wrapped his arms around my shoulders. He rested his forehead against mine and we smiled at each other.

"As much as I love this moment, we should probably clean the house." I said. Shawn chuckled and pulled away from the hug.

"Okay baby." He said. Him and I went downstairs and cleaned the house. After we cleaned, we went upstairs, showered, brushed our teeth, and got dressed. I put on a floral summer dress, and Shawn put on a nice shirt and black dress pants.

"You're going to get hot in those pants babe. Well, you already are hot, but I mean that you'll get hot temperature wise." I said. Shawn laughed.

"Well, hot stuff, should I just change into a t-shirt and shorts?" He asked. I nodded.

"Yeah. Well, only if you want to. I just don't want you getting too hot." I said. He kissed my forehead.

"Look at you, my beautiful soon to be wife, taking care of me and looking out for me." He said. I smiled as I watched him go into our closet.

"647 days." I said.

"What?" He asked.

"647 days until we get married." I said.

"You're already counting down?" He asked as he poked his head out. I nodded.

"Of course I am. It's going to be the best day of our lives, and I can't wait." I said. Shawn smiled at me and then went back to getting changed.

"I can't wait either honey." He said. I smiled. We went downstairs, and my cousins, who I hadn't seen in so long that they had never met Shawn, were the first ones to arrive.

"Hi! Have you guys met my fiancé, Shawn Mendes?" I asked as Shawn stepped over to us and put his arm around my waist.

"No, we haven't. It's so nice to finally meet you! Y/n has told us so much about you." Michele, one of my cousins, said as she shook Shawn's hand.

"It's nice to finally meet you guys too. Y/n's told me a lot about you guys." Shawn said. I smiled. Soon, the rest of his family, and the rest of my family, arrived. The house was packed, and I couldn't find Shawn. I went up to my cousin, Missy.

"Hey, have you seen Shawn?" I asked.

"I think that he went out on the back deck. You seem to really love him." Missy said. I smiled and nodded before looking at my engagement ring.

"Yeah. He's it. He's the one for me. I'm going to go find him. I'll see you in a little bit!" I said.

"Okay!" She said. I stepped out onto the back deck. Shawn was leaning against the railing, talking to my cousin Eric. They hadn't heard me come out.

"You really love my cousin, don't you?" Eric asked. I smiled as I saw Shawn nod his head.

"Yeah. More than anything. She's the one, and I've known that since the moment that I laid eyes on her. We actually had our second date and first kiss at the bench that's dedicated to your Uncle." Shawn said.

"Really?" Eric asked. Shawn nodded.

"Yup. I can't wait to marry Y/n." Shawn said. I smiled.

"Well I can't wait to marry you either baby." I said. Shawn turned around and smiled at me. He opened up his arms for me to come into. I gladly did and as soon as he could, he wrapped his arms around me.

"I didn't hear you come out darling." He said as I leaned into his side. I nodded.

"Yeah. I didn't hear much. I heard Eric ask 'You really love my cousin, don't you?' and then everything after that." I said.

"Oh good, so you didn't hear me say that I'll hire strippers for his bachelor party?" Eric asked.

"You better not." I said.

"No, he's just kidding. Don't worry darling, no strippers." Shawn said. I nodded.

"You having a good time?" I asked Shawn. He smiled and nodded.

"Yeah. I like meeting family members of yours that I've never met before. What about you babe? Are you having a good time?" Shawn asked as he rubbed my back a little. I nodded.

"Yeah. The house is so full and so packed." I said. Shawn nodded.

"We have a lot of people that love us here." Shawn said. I nodded.

"Yup." I said.

"I saw that you guys have a piano. Do you think you'll play it later?" Eric asked Shawn as Michele and her husband, Danny, stepped out onto the back deck. I smiled at them and they smiled back.

"Maybe. What do you think darling, should I play the piano later?" Shawn asked before kissing the side of my head. I nodded.

"Yeah. What would you play?" I asked. Shawn thought for a moment.

"I don't know. What do you want me to play?" Shawn asked. I smiled at him and put my hand to his cheek. His smile widened.

"How about those two songs that you always play for me on the piano?" I asked. Shawn nodded and gave me a quick kiss.

"Okay darling." He said.

"What songs?" Danny asked.

"It's a surprise!" I said and everyone laughed. Shawn and I continued to talk to Eric, Michele, and Danny for a little bit longer. At the first award show that Shawn and I ever went to together, he told me to squeeze his side whenever I got nervous. It then became a thing that I would do, whether we were at an award show or not. As we talked to my cousins, I noticed Eric's necklace. I squeezed Shawn's side, and he looked at me, and then at my cousins.

"Excuse us for a minute please. We'll be right back." Shawn said. My cousins nodded.

"Okay." They said. Shawn held my hand and guided me through our home and upstairs and into our bedroom. He shut the door behind us.

"What's going on baby? We were just talking to your cousins, there's no need to be nervous around them." Shawn asked and said. I nodded and looked at the picture of my Uncle Scottie and I. I sighed and then looked Shawn.

"Can we sit on the bed please?" I asked. He nodded.

"Of course we can. What's going on honey?" Shawn asked. He held my hands in his and I felt bad when I saw the worry and concern in his eyes.

"I'm sorry, I don't mean to worry you, I just..." I said. I sighed and blinked back tears.

"It's okay my love. What's going on?" He asked. I looked at him.

"I love Eric. He's great. But do you know what memory of him stands out the most?" I asked Shawn. He shook his head.

"No. What is it?" Shawn asked.

"It was at Uncle Scottie's funeral. I had been looking at the poster boards that had pictures of him on it, and then I looked over, and Eric was sobbing. His face was red because he was sobbing so hard. Did you notice the necklace that he's wearing?" I asked. Shawn nodded.

"Yeah." Shawn said.

"It has some of Uncle Scottie's ashes in it. Why can't Uncle Scottie be there at our wedding?" I asked as I finally let some tears fall. Shawn immediately began to wipe them away.

"Oh honey. He will be there, just in spirit. Maybe we can play his favorite song at the wedding." Shawn suggested. I shook my head.

"No. No. I can't stand that song. They played it on repeat at his funeral. I know that it was his favorite song, but every single time I hear it, I think of his funeral." I said. Shawn pulled me in for a hug.

"Okay baby, okay. We should probably head back downstairs." Shawn said. I sat up and nodded.

"Yeah. Will you stick by my side?" I asked as I wiped tears away. Shawn nodded as he rubbed my back.

"Of course I will honey. I love you." He said. I smiled.

"I love you too." I said. We went downstairs and back out onto the deck. Michele looked worried, and I felt bad. Eric was playing frisbee with some of our cousins.

"Everything okay?" Michele asked. I sighed and told her what I had told Shawn. She nodded and pulled me in for a hug.

"Do you think that it would be okay to pay tribute to Uncle Scottie at the wedding in some way?" I asked. She nodded.

"Of course." She said. I nodded.

"Shawn! Come play frisbee with us!" Sam, my cousin who Shawn had met a million times, yelled. Shawn looked at me.

"You going to be okay darling?" Shawn asked. I nodded.

"Yeah. I'll be right here babe." I said. He nodded and kissed my cheek.

"Okay honey." He said, and then went to play frisbee with my cousins, who, in 647 days, would be his cousin in laws. I turned to Michele and Danny.

"I feel like we should do a group photo. Shawn's tour photographer, Josiah, is here to take pictures of everything. Maybe he can take a group photo of our family, and Shawn with his family, and maybe a group photo of all the Y/l/n relatives and his relatives together." I said. Michele nodded.

"That would be great! We would probably have to take it outside because I don't think we could take the group photo in the house. How many of our relatives are here?" Michele asked. I thought for a moment.

"Um, there's about fourteen of us here." I said.

"How many of Shawn's family are here?" She asked. I figured it out and told her. She nodded. "Yeah the pictures would definitely have to be taken outside." She said. I nodded.

"Yeah." I said. My back was to the steps of the deck as I talked to Michele, Danny, and Ellen. Golden Hour by Kacey Musgraves started to play, and I smiled and laughed.

"What?" Ellen asked.

"Shawn's about to come running up the stairs so he can dance with me. We always dance to this song." I said.

"Did someone say something about dancing?" Shawn asked. I laughed and turned to him.

"Yup, I did." I said.

"May I have this dance?" Shawn asked as he held out a hand. I smiled and nodded.

"Of course you can." I said and we began dancing, our eyes never leaving each other as we danced, smiled, and laughed. Eventually, we stopped dancing.

"I love dancing with you." Shawn said. I smiled.

"I love dancing with you too babe. Are you having fun with my cousins?" I asked. He nodded.

"Yeah." He said. I smiled.

"Good." I said. He kissed my cheek, and instead of going back to playing frisbee with my cousins, he stayed with me. He hadn't really talked to my cousin Ellen much, so he talked to her as I talked to Michele and Danny. Michele smiled.

"You can just tell that he's so in love with you." Michele said.

"I agree." Danny said. I smiled.

"How can you tell?" I asked.

"It's the way he looks at you, even when you aren't looking. Or the fact that he always has his arm around you, or he's holding your hand or something. I remember, when he called me to ask if we would come up and surprise you for the proposal, he just kept saying that he loves you so much and that he wants to spend the rest of his life with you. He said that he wants to grow old with you and have kids and grandkids with you." Michele said. I smiled at Shawn, who was still talking to Ellen. I then looked back at Michele and Danny.

"I feel the same way about him. I love him so much." I said. Soon, we took group pictures and then everybody was brought into the family room, where the piano is. There were so many people in the house that they spilled over into other rooms. I stood next to Shawn as he began to speak to everyone.

"So, first of all, Y/n and I want to say thank you to everyone for coming to help us celebrate our engagement, and to help me surprise Y/n. One of my cousins asked me earlier if we had set a date yet, and then she said 'never mind, you guys just got engaged, there's no way that you guys could've set a date already.' and Y/n, my love, how many days until the wedding?" Shawn asked me with a smile.

"647 days." I said and everyone laughed.

"Yes, so we're not sure of where we're going to get married. We know that it's going to be somewhere in Boston because so many events that are important to our love story happened in Boston. But, we're hoping that, wherever in Boston it is, you guys will all be there on May twenty fifth, 2024." Shawn said and our families cheered.

"YES!" Some people yelled and Shawn and I laughed.

"Eric asked me earlier if I was going to play on the piano tonight. Do you guys mind if I do that?" Shawn asked.

"No!" Everyone yelled. Shawn smiled.

"Okay. Let's grab a chair for Y/n so she can sit next to the piano. Babe, should I play those songs that I always play when we're home alone and I do this?" Shawn asked. I smiled and nodded.

"Yeah." I said as I sat down. Shawn sat down at the piano and smiled. He began to play Can't Help Falling In Love by Haley Reinhart, and everyone, including me, couldn't help but laugh when Shawn changed the lyrics a little bit.

"I can't help falling in love with Y/n." He sang, and we all smiled and laughed. I looked at him and watched him play. I smiled at him, the man that I love and that I'm lucky enough to get to marry. Everyone clapped when he finished the song.

"Beautiful!" I said. Shawn smiled at me.

"Ready for the next song?" He asked. I nodded.

"Yeah." I said.

"I'll make a deal with you babe. I'll play the next song as long as you sit on the piano seat with me." Shawn said. I nodded.

"Deal." I said as I got up and sat with him. He kissed the top of my head as I leaned my head on his shoulder and put my hand on his back so I could rub his back a little. He then began to play All of Me by John Legend. My head was resting on his shoulder, but I picked it up and looked at him as he sang. I smiled and then kissed his arm. He smiled at me.

"How many times do I have to tell you / Even when you're crying you're beautiful too / The world is beating you down, I'm around through every move / You're my downfall, you're my muse / My worst distraction, my rhythm and blues / I can't stop singing, it's ringing, in my head for you" Shawn sang. I smiled at him and he kept looking at me and smiling. I leaned my head on his shoulder again and watched as his long fingers danced across the piano keys. Soon, Shawn was done singing it. I looked at him.

"Beautiful." I said. He smiled.

"So it's just like you?" He asked. I blushed.

"Oh my gosh." I said.

"Shawn, what about your guitar? You should play something on the guitar." Aaliyah asked and said. Shawn nodded.

"Okay, I'll be right back." He said.

"Okay." I said. He went upstairs and then came back down with his guitar. He sat down next to me, but this time he was facing everyone. He looked at me.

"I'm about to be all of the parts of One Direction for you babe." He said and I laughed.

"Oh my gosh." I said. He began to play Little Things by One Direction and it was beautiful. Soon, Shawn put his guitar away. Some people left, either to go home, or to their hotels. Some people still stayed behind.

"Come here." Shawn said as he gently grabbed my hand and led me to our back deck. We leaned against the railing. Shawn put his arm around my shoulders. I looked at him, and he was looking at our backyard, smiling.

"What are you thinking about baby?" I asked. He looked at me.

"I'm the luckiest man alive. I'm so damn lucky. In the past three years of knowing each other, and two and a half years of being together, we've come so far. We've conquered the distance, and now we live together. Do you know that I love to wake up before you? Because I do." He asked and said as we turned so we were facing each other. He wrapped his arms around my shoulders and I wrapped my arms around his waist.

"Yeah?" I asked. He nodded.

"Yeah. I love waking up before you because you look so content and peaceful. Your lips are usually open a little, and then when your eyes flutter open, and you smile at me... holy crap babe. Your eyes and your smile... they do something to me." He said. I giggled.

"What do they do to you?" I asked. Shawn pulled me closer to him, and I let my chin rest on his chest and I looked up at him. He brushed some stray hair out of my face and smiled at me as he held me.

"They don't just give me butterflies, they give me the whole damn zoo." Shawn said. I smiled.

"Awww honey." I said as happiness filled my body. He chuckled.

"It's true. I love when we wake up, and you're still asleep, and the sunlight is coming in and hitting you just right. That sight takes my breath away all the time. You take my breath away all the time." He said. I smiled at him.

"I love you." I said. He gave me a kiss.

"I love you too. Can you believe it though? The day that you and I met, did you think that three years later, we would be engaged, living together, and have our whole lives planned out together?" He asked. I shook my head.

"No. I remember, this is going to sound so cheesy, ugh." I said.

"It's okay babe. We're a cheesy couple." He said, and I laughed.

"Well, when I saw you for the first time, it was as if my heart went 'Oh there you are, I've been looking for you.' and I just... I knew that you were the one for me right away." I said. Shawn smiled and kissed me.

"Well I knew that you were the one for me right away too." Shawn said. I smiled.

"We should probably go back inside." I said. He shook his head.

"Just stay out here with me for a little longer. Please?" He asked. I nodded and then rested my head on his chest as we looked at our backyard. Shawn rubbed my back and I hummed, feeling content and happy in the arms of the man that I love. Later on, after everyone had left, I posted the group picture of my family.

"The descendants of (your great-grandfather's name) and (your great-grandmother's name) are out here, comin at ya. Thank you to my amazing family for helping Shawn surprise me by proposing to me, and thank you for coming over to celebrate mine and Shawn's engagement! Shawn and I love you!" I captioned it. Shawn smiled.

"I love your family." Shawn said. I smiled.

"I love yours. Mind if I post the group picture of your family and my family and us?" I asked.

"That's fine babe." He said. I nodded and posted the photo.

"647 days until the Y/l/n family and Mendes family are all together again! Shawn and I are so grateful to have such wonderful families that will become one big family when him and I get married. We love you guys! Also, thank you Josiah for standing on a chair to get this photo, lol, Shawn and I love you!" I wrote. Shawn then posted the photo of just the Mendes family, and the group photo of both of our families. Shawn and I were standing in the middle, smiling at each other.

"''Cause I got a really big team / And they need some really big rings' - Drake. Y/n and I are so grateful to have such wonderful families, who will become one big family in 647 days! Thank you so much to my family and Y/n's for helping me to surprise my love by proposing to her, and thank you for helping us celebrate our love today. More pictures to follow soon, thanks to Josiah. I can't wait to marry my sweet and wonderful girl." Shawn wrote. I smiled.

"Did you really use a line from one of Drake's songs?" I asked with a giggle. Shawn chuckled and nodded.

"Yup. Well, it was fitting, wasn't it?" He asked. I nodded.

"Yup, it was." I said. Shawn and I were sitting up in bed. He put his phone to the side and then moved over so he was straddling me. He smirked at me.

"You know, we're all alone now, so we can finally do a bit of our own celebrating." Shawn said. I smiled.

"And what exactly do you have in mind?" I asked as Shawn began to kiss my neck.

"Darling, you know what I have in mind." He said. I laughed and nodded.

"Okay baby." I said. He kissed my cheek, and then we celebrated our engagement in our bedroom. Gosh, I love Shawn and I can't wait to marry him.
